Listen to how much more effortless and in tune he is now on that high note after the long gap from 2009-2016. I would guess that he changed his approach to that bit and started singing it in a full, rich head voice (or mix some would call it) rather than belting and the performance is all the better for it. Thom’s head voice has always been one of his greatest strengths to begin with and it’s wonderful to hear him play to that strength in this song rather than forcing his chest voice up to the note like he did as a younger man.

You can tell that in 2017 he has to resort to using a bit of falsetto to do the last bit, but that's a pretty fucking spectacular run of 23 years since 1993 hitting the final notes with full chest voice. I think also doing a three year run of AMSP shows probably also wrecked some havoc at his age.

The entire pinkpop concert was thom at his vocal technique peak, although now he knows how to control his voice better to fit the message he wants to convey

0:00 That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little ride. So I rode to the end of the road.
0:30 And when I got there, I thought maybe I’d ride to the end of town.
0:54 And when I got there, I thought maybe I’d just ride across Greenbow County.
1:25 And I figured, since I rode this far, maybe I’d just ride across the great state of Alabama. And that’s what I did. I rode clear across Alabama.
For no particular reason I just kept on going.
1:56 I ran clear to the ocean. 2:25 And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on goin'.
2:55 When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on goin'.
5:35 I had a lot of company. My mama always said "you got to put the past behind you before you can move on". And I think that's what my running was all about. I had run for 25 years, 2 moths, 14 days, 16hs.
    6:00 I'm pretty tired… I think I'll go home now
And just like that, my running days was over. So I went home to Alabama

His technique has like... improved a lot between 09 and 16. Like, the more recent takes have really consistent head mix. Big resonance with much less tightness. Great airflow, he looks really loose and supported.
Big man, always growing... what a legend
