From my experience He really is a great person. My uncle had cancer a few years back and wanted to meet the band but due to late notice they couldn’t get everyone there. Thom called him and was very apologetic about it. My uncle ended up getting to take pictures and meet Ed and Phil and got to see them perform at Coachella that day.

One thing i massively respect is how its a team. The guys all stick together and support each other. No yelling or storming or arguing, just "Thom is pissed...for good reason...lets see how this plays out". Gotta admire the teamwork and unity. Also, Thom's accent is super rad! The band has been touring for 25 years, you've just watched a video of all the times Thom has gotten angry (4 minutes!), obviously it will seem to you like he is angry and toxic all the time, and this might be the only video you've seen of who he is. All this proves is that he is human, just like the rest of us, and gets angry sometimes. Not that surprising or interesting. Possibly even reassuring.

Nowadays, the "single" scene has changed quite a bit in lieu of stuff like TH-cam and Spotify, and they package their promotional stuff differently. In some ways, that can benefit a band trying to get a crowd a bit more if it's done right. Back a decade and all the rest of the decades prior, it was a very different scene. In the 90s as Radiohead was coming up, they had more hooks and more specifically radio friendly songs than they had post-Kid A era. Things changed, but the fans they originally grabbed didn't really change and they probably ended up losing a lot of them on the way out of the 90s. Same thing happened for a bit with Rush after Moving Pictures when they made a big shift away from that strictly accessible sound during Subdivisions.

Hes not an angry man at all. I saw him live in 2019 in Korea. There was a moment where he was about to perform Dawn Chorus and there was some noise... I don't know what it was it sounded like a burp... I think he burped and he just started laughing and everyone was laughing. And to be honest the times when he is mad at event organisers, it is understandable. Hes been in the business so long, you expect professional best of the best standards and people pay a lot of money to see them. So why are things fucking up? I saw Radiohead in 2012 and it was £75 a ticket. He knows the costs of a show and wants to deliver the best experience. BTW it was, it was a 2 hour set of glorius Radiohead songs.

I imagine his anger comes from people fucking up the band's craft. They're 5 insanely talented musicians who've been doing this for over 20 years; they know what they want and when they don't get it, ESPECIALLY when performing in front of thousands of people who they're eager to entertain, they (especially Thom) get pissed. Thom very clearly has sensory issues and is most likely neurodivergent, this is coming from a someone who is also neurodivergent. I don’t think he’s an asshole, I think he needs patience. It’s not shown but after he stormed off stage, he came back and apologized, even played an extra song. He’s literally walked off in the middle of interviews because they were too overwhelming or he couldn’t stay still. He’d turn around during photo shoots and face the wall because the lights flashing made him panic. This behavior isn’t new nor is it a red flag, in my opinion.

I'm also neurodivergent and react the same sometimes when I'm overwhelmed and/or overstimulated, and I'm usually not an angry person at all, so I feel really bad and apologetic right after (just like Thom in your example). @@catalina5711 I think what had initially happened was there were speakers underneath the stage, probably subwoofers, the vibration of which caused a laptop (or some other type of equipment) to fall off one of their tables as they were performing, which halted the show. Thom chastised the organizers of the event for the incident, then took the opportunity to thank the guy, who earlier in the show had been shaking a tambourine, for seizing shaking the tambourine, and then awkwardly filled the dead air as they tried to fix their setup in the background.

It's an extremely difficult song to play, as it's so fast and frantic. So naturally mistakes do happen live. Furthermore, it's one of Thom's favourite songs, so fucking it up really frustrates him. It's also pretty bad that Jonny is the guy responsible for handling the most difficult part of the entire song, the actual synths themselves
Many years ago I was fresh out of the army and a dear friend of mine was going on the road with a band he was in. Being we had not seen one another in a long time and we wanted to spend time together he was able to land me a job as a roadie/tech and trust me it paid garbage but that wasn’t the point. I got a crash course on tuning guitars and setting up and was a recipe for disaster. When it came to music he can become a real prick and he was just nasty to me when it didn’t tune his guitar well. I would get yelled at for honest simple mistakes and it did take a toll on me after awhile. Outside of music we stayed tight but I would never work with him again. Some musicians are just real a$$holes to work with. Thom going off on Jonny like that gave me a Flashback.

There’s a clip I can’t find where he’s playing at a small venue as a solo gig on the piano and before he starts one song he just bluntly says something like ‘anyone who wants to speak, you can fuck off outside’ or something. Memory’s fuzzy on that though so don’t quote me
Thom very clearly has sensory issues and is most likely neurodivergent, this is coming from a someone who is also neurodivergent. I don’t think he’s an asshole, I think he needs patience. It’s not shown but after he stormed off stage, he came back and apologized, even played an extra song. He’s literally walked off in the middle of interviews because they were too overwhelming or he couldn’t stay still. He’d turn around during photo shoots and face the wall because the lights flashing made him panic. This behavior isn’t new nor is it a red flag, in my opinion.
THANK YOU. I'm also neurodivergent and react the same sometimes when I'm overwhelmed and/or overstimulated, and I'm usually not an angry person at all, so I feel really bad and apologetic right after (just like Thom in your example). It's crazy to me that no one else seems to suspect neurodivergence as the cause of his negative reactions, to me it seems so obvious.

he's not difficult to deal with. organising concerts and tours is very hard and stressful, not to mention how hard these songs to play. its totally reasonable as to why he's mad and stressed when things go wrong.

@@catalina5711 I think what had initially happened was there were speakers underneath the stage, probably subwoofers, the vibration of which caused a laptop (or some other type of equipment) to fall off one of their tables as they were performing, which halted the show. Thom chastised the organizers of the event for the incident, then took the opportunity to thank the guy, who earlier in the show had been shaking a tambourine, for seizing shaking the tambourine, and then awkwardly filled the dead air as they tried to fix their setup in the background.

They had to play creep 4 times so the TV Crew could get all the shots a d it really pissed off Thom. They also weren't allowed to play the song they wanted too, so they did it after without warning. That's when he flips out a bit haha
The one with Idioteque was an extremely inappropriate reaction. The song broke down but the atmosphere wasn't ruined. He shouldn't have left the stage. He should stay and save it.

It's an extremely difficult song to play, as it's so fast and frantic. So naturally mistakes do happen live. Furthermore, it's one of Thom's favourite songs, so fucking it up really frustrates him.
It's also pretty bad that Jonny is the guy responsible for handling the most difficult part of the entire song, the actual synths themselves

Many years ago I was fresh out of the army and a dear friend of mine was going on the road with a band he was in. Being we had not seen one another in a long time and we wanted to spend time together he was able to land me a job as a roadie/tech and trust me it paid garbage but that wasn’t the point. I got a crash course on tuning guitars and setting up and was a recipe for disaster. When it came to music he can become a real prick and he was just nasty to me when it didn’t tune his guitar well. I would get yelled at for honest simple mistakes and it did take a toll on me after awhile. Outside of music we stayed tight but I would never work with him again. Some musicians are just real a$$holes to work with. Thom going off on Jonny like that gave me a Flashback.
