  • It's time to get started with clearing out the flat, and what better place to start - the worst part of the flat - the kitchen.
It took a day to remove all the cabinets and plumbing, and what we found was that the stud walls are almost non-existent. What is left of the structure is more-or-less hanging from the ceiling, because they sure aren't connected to the floor any more.
We definitely made the right decision to completely clear out the internals because there is absolutely nothing worth saving.

That flat is in a right old state. I can't believe someone was living there like that. You certainly have your work cut out there

The secret is to make her mad, then let her loose with a hammer - so she can take her anger out on the wall....lol

What a rotten mess. Great work by the two of you, to clean it all up.

Thanks. To think the guy was actually using the toilet like that! Yuk.

Not really surprised the connections at the cooker switch weren't tight. The poor sod who replaced that cooker probably wanted to leave that hole as quickly as possible and I can't blame him. The piece of T&E strung diagonally across the tiles supports that theory.
Wonder if the old floor underneath the carpet contains asbestos. This place looks like it should be stripped down to the bare slab and block walls. Wasn't there any kind of heating in there? No wonder it had damp issues!
Edit: since there's two consumer units for such a tiny place I'd guess there used to be a storage heater in the living room/bedroom. Wonder where that's gone.

      Definitely not 18th Edition compliant!
There probably were storage heaters at some point in the past.

You really should have been wearing a good mask during all that demolition. Mould spores would have been swirling round everywhere plus, even more serious there might have been asbestos anywhere in that building. Even the kitchen floor tiles looked like they could have been the type that contained asbestos.

Yeah, probably, but that doesn't really bother me. The Mrs had her mask on, though, mainly because of the smell!!
The agent wouldn't come into the flat during the viewing because of the foul stench.

That wall is in such a state, there's no saving that. Looks like a lot of work ahead of you, good luck!

Yes, most of the stud walls are so rotten that they aren't attached to the sole-plate anymore and are just hanging from their attachments to the ceiling!
