  • Hi everyone!!! Believe it or not there are some bad tasting tomatoes and these are my top picks for 2023. These will never make it back into my gardens again.

    Greetings from Ukraine!
The taste of the tomato greatly depends on the soil in which it grows. I've experimented during the last three growing seasons, planting the same varieties in two different garden plots: one with sandy soil and another with what's called here «chornozem» - a soil which is very rich in humus. I planted both varieties you found disgusting, that's Chupa-Chups and Ananas Bleue Lignee (a bigger variety of Ananas Bleue) and they were both absolutely stunning tasty in chornozem soil with regular watering: they were sweet with almost no acidity and a slight aftertaste of coriander. But in sandy soil with no watering, they were both very, very sour, almost like lemon, and with absolutely hard skin. Another variety, called Alice's Dream, had a reverse problem, it was sweet and tasty in the sand without watering, but absolutely blank in humus soil with watering.
So probably the problem is not in a special tomato, maybe these varieties just prefer different growing conditions (weather, climate, soil, watering system, fertilizing system, etc)

Wow very interesting to read this. I agree with you that the soil and what’s in it can definitely add to the way tomatoes flavors are. It’s very cool that you do these kinds of experiments. I love doing things like this myself.

Hi Jen, really appreciate you to give us also the bad and the ugly, so we need not waste space, time and effort and save ourselves disappointments. But I'd also love you to give us the info WHERE you are gardening, which soil and climate, rainfall / irrigation - because these can be so important factors contributing to the taste of tomatoes. Would be cool to find the info right below your videos, so newbies like me do not need to click themselves thoughout all your videos - thanks!

Thank you so much for watching and I’m glad you’re enjoying my content. I’m in northeastern West Virginia. A big thank you to you and Ben for being willing to taste all tomatoes and some of them twice just to confirm how bad they are. I grew Cosmic Eclipse this year and it confirmed that I’m not a fan of antho tasting tomatoes. I’ve tasted a couple of others and really disliked them too. I have so many other varieties to grow that any seeds I have for that type will go on the back burner or be grown as plants for friends who like them.

"Tomatenflüsterer" (see TH-cam channel) in Austria is growing hundreds of varieties in his garden [with an absolute stunning panorama view of Mondsee ("Moon Lake") and the Austrian Alps in the background] and he LOVES Chupa Chups. Actually there are at least three different Chupa Chups varieties - Orange, Pink and Red. He loves them so much, that he grew all three of them last year and he praised them so much that I bought seeds from him and try to grow Chupa Chups Orange this year myself.

I’m surprised with all the names of tomatoes and most called heirlooms. I grew about 50 varieties and wasn’t impressed with very many. The mealy thing and green cores, cracked fruit, a lot of waste. I don’t like watermelon that are mealy and fiberous either. Have no idea where all these varieties are coming from besides backyard crosses.
I may just go back to hybrids until I find the right one for my garden. I do want to find the right heirlooms in all veg categories because seeds are costly.
Read a comment here about the taste being different in different soils, environments and that is true.
