I love Superman El Último Escape's layout at Six Flags Mexico. It doesn't give you a break, you're ejecting out of your seat even before the lift hill, which makes the way up much more intimidating.

  • @zacg_

    A few wild cards:
The Legend. The layout is super unconventional and it's really a thrilling experience. The laterals can't be beat and I love how it randomly takes you into the water park.
X2: it's hard to say what actually counts as the "layout" here because of the flipping but that's the point. The track layout is really cool on its own but you throw in the flipping and it's unreal. Besides, you have to factor in the flipping because the coaster isn't meant to be ridden without it so essentially it counts as being part of the layout.
Storm Chaser: this layout looks weak but somehow creates pure awesomeness. That alone is worth a mention.
Shockwave (SFOT): Like Storm Chaser, the layout doesn't look particularly impressive. But somehow it's an unbelievable coaster. I still can't figure out how the coaster is able to use such a small lift hill, a boring setting and a layout that looks so mediocre and blow your mind with extreme positive and negative G forces.
Viper (SFMM): its the pinnacle of everything that Arrow ever did (at least that still feels like an Arrow. X2 is their best work but it's not a typical Arrow in any way.) It's got the best of your classic Arrow elements on a much bigger and better scale. And the elements just keep coming.

Honestly, Mine Blower and maybe Boardwalk Bullet are good wild cards. I've only been on Mine Blower, but that ride was intense with an inversion and a lot of ejector airtime on twisting hills and with sharp turns. Boardwalk Bullet does a lot while being absurdly compact, and should also be a consideration in a similar vein to Mine Blower.
Also, Lightning Rod is overrated. It's an airtime focused layout which now seems stuck on only delivering floater until you're most of the way through the quad-down.

Maverick is the only ride on this list that I have ever been on. I loved that first drop and these fast-paces stengel dives.
Otherwise, I really like the layout of some german coasters.
    1. Expedition GeForce. Propably the craziest first drop I have ever experienced followed by ejector hills and turns through the woods and over a lake.
    2. Der Schwur des Kärnan. Drop is Similar to GeForce, but 20m higher and completely in the dark. Then there is that crazy element after the first drop, followed by some nice turns, two ejector bunny hops and of course the two surprises (I don't wanna spoil you if you plan to ride this one day).

    • @zacg_
      @zacg_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

SLCs do have good layouts. But the trains traverse then in such a clunky way that not only is it an uncomfortable experience but the momentum is ruined as it goes through them. I think of SLCs as a pinball going through a narrow passageway but hitting the wall the entire way through instead of smoothly moving through it. It ruins the effect of the elements. Plus, the restraints really magnify that clunkiness and direct it into your head.
If Vekoma could fix the clunkiness and replace the restraints with the Riddler Revenge restraints then SLCs would be really cool. I don't think they'd be as good as the Batman clones but they'd be cool.

Thunderbolt at Kennywood is pretty good in terms of classic woodies with a dive out of the station, turn around then drops and up into the lift then 2 hardly banked helixes with some great laterals before diving back into the ravine, turning around with a 90 foot final drop.
Ravine Flyer II is also nice with using the terrain to it's advantage and flying over the road with some nice ejector air time. Many say that the latter half isn't that great. But it really weaves through itself and in the backrow you get whipped right through that 90 degree banked turn
And I think Raging Bull has a really unique twister layout for a B&M Hyper Coaster.

So over here in Europe there are three layouts that I consider flawless, even tho they are not all from the most powerful rides.
Troy: airtime, laterals and a well paced compact layout. It’s a blast form start to finish and has so many different elements
Lech Coaster: the possibly second to most intense coaster in Europe. Packed with great airtime and whippy inversions as well as some crazy powerful turns. It packs so much into its ride time.
Helix: while not being that extreme, you get everything. Airtime, hangtime, whip, duration, intensity.

X² has one of my favorite layouts. The first drop, followed by a Raven Turn, followed by an airtime hill while spinning 360 backwards, followed by a sweet weightless roll, then the INSANE second Raven Turn, followed by a last pop of an inversion.
    That ride is a BEAST!

@@AirtimeThrills Even without having ridden any B&M hyper that looks obvious to me. Two untrimmed hills with dips after the 1st drop on a coaster with a 1st drop of 215' and 80 MPH is unheard of anywhere else. I wish there was a giga version of it with a drop 0f 331' and a length like Steel Dragon 2000. (You can always fantasize and look at "Terrawolf" the NL2 version of Diamondback with twice the drop. ;)

I´m totally with you with SROS/NE! It´s the perfect coaster! The only thing that would make it even more perfect would be the inclusion of that amazing twisted ejector flip that was first used on Expedition Ge Force. If only they would have included it in the second part of the ride, e.g. the transition that leads into the tunnel. Since EGF was built one year later, maybe they hadn´t come up with that element yet.
Other things that make SROS superior than EGF: It´s much longer, taller in every aspect (the hills on EGF are actually small, since the ride is built over other rides, so they never go to ground level), it has a tunnel and these awesome long trains.
An honorary mention to your list: Revolution at Magic Mountain! It´s a fantastic terrain coaster! Being the first modern looping coaster it would have been enough to just have this one loop, but the ride does so much more.

  • @jordanwolfson8378

Hot take: lower to the ground inversions might be faster and therefore more intense, but I actually really enjoy inversions that are high up and slow. When I'm upside down, I just get some giddy euphoria from the ground being SO far away. Maybe it's the fear factor? But to me, that's why I adore TMNT Shellraiser. It's just a perfect layout for my tastes.

Really good list. I would include Lightning run, it has a very good layout that packs in 11 airtime moments but they are almost all different, the first drop to the outer bank turns to the bunny hills, it packs in a little of every airtime and it does not lose speed. It is fast paced throughout the entire layout. Also I would probably include Boulder dash because just how the layout interacts so well with the terrain and it packs in lateral turns and good airtime moments. Also thanks for including Banshee, it really does have a fantastic, long, and forcefull layout for a B&M Invert. The inversions may not be as wippy but it is just different. The reason the best positive Gs are on the bottom of the pretzel knot is because that is where the ride reaches the max speed, not at the bottom of the drop.

Good list. I would add 2 PA coasters. Steel Curtain provides excellent variety with 9 inversions, plenty of airtime, and a good mix of forces ranging from graceful to intense.
Also, Lightning Racer may not have the best forces, but it's layout and interactions with the other side is excellent. It combines parallel racing, head on dueling, and everything in between to perfection.

  • @rcjew
    @rcjew 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Forgive me for being old school, but I think Six Flags Magic Mountain's Revolution has one of the best layouts I know. It begins with a first drop buried in the trees. Then it is followed with two more progressively taller drops. Then a long drawn out hill which builds up anticipation into its signature first ever successful vertical loop. Then banks upward left, then right into its tunnel. The ride threads the vertical loop only to wring out the last element of a highly banked helix to end the ride. It may have the air time or the intensity as many of today's coasters, but look around at most coasters (looping) and compare layouts. And then think about how this was a first of its kind roller coaster. There's a reason why this coaster got me hooked on coasters in the first place.
By the way, this is a great and unique video! Thanks! Keep up the good work!

Your review of Ghostrider makes me think of another category for a video. Best "In the Structure" coasters. Roller coasters with great moments or prolonged sections of track that take place within the supports of the coaster. These sections make the ride seem so much faster and harder to see what's ahead. I can imagine most of the entries would be woodies, but I think it'd be a great list!
