    My Hero 5 Session is still running solid. It’s never crashed. But my Hero 10 Black on the other hand… sometimes it freezes and once it corrupted a bunch of data (maybe it was a dodgy sd card?). Anyway, I still love the cameras for vlogging. I’d like to see them work on reliability though.

      I had the Hero 4 Black edition. Loved it, until I didn't close the underwater housing correctly when I went snorkeling.
      I heard those quick beeps above my eyes (had it attached to my mask) and immediately realised what happened and that I killed it.
      Bought a different brand action cam with the insurance money, one with better specs (Xioami Yi, I believe), but I never used it for some reason. I guess the fun was just gone.
      Wait, it mostly was the lack of a microphone connector that irritated me.

We film cars and have a full assortment of action cameras (hero 7, 8, 9/ Max) and after dealing with the multitude of issues its simply easier to buy a modern phone and film un-stabilized footage. • @defalt8558
      @defalt8558 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Video files have metadata in them, and that metadata includes the date it was made in. It's stored via UNIX timestamp, which means that if for some reason the value is set to 0, the date will be 1/1/1970 at 00:00. Sometimes, when drives or files get corrupted, some of this metadata is lost, causing the value to be set to 0. If the date is different, the problem might be a misconfiguration in the camera's time and date, as other people have pointed out.

    When I got back into flying as a Private Pilot in 2017 after a 15 year hiatus, I purchased 2 Chinese knock-off GoPro's to mount inside and outside the aircraft to capture my wife and my adventures. I think one was 1080p and the other was $45 and 2.7K. I never lost a second of footage, never had them freeze or turn off due to heat or firmware issues. I did all the stabilization in Premier Pro and that was always good enough. Then I decided to splurge and picked up a GoPro Hero 5 Black and Hero 6 Black to enjoy the 4K footage. Looking back I wish I had just run out into moving-traffic, or poured Ghost pepper sauce in my eyes instead. There was seldom a day where they worked flawlessly and many days when they both froze, or turned off unexpectedly for no reason. I think the President of the company was a huckster and was just making a cash and stock grab until he could sell off this albatross. I fly 11 different DJI Drones commercially along with 3 Autel EVO Pro Drones and they are both rock solid companies and I have never had an issue with over 1,160 operations under my belt. The quality control at GoPro is virtually non-existent.

      Some fools will buy the 6 , and because its not working, they buy the 7, which does not work so they buy the 8... You had the sense to realise GP has a mental illness. They use the lack of reliability as a marketing tool.

      I had used a $60 SJcam from 2016 for many years now. And it's image quality was actually verry good. Colors were a bit dark and "blueish" though. But after tinkering a bit in post edit, it actually looked a bit like a GoPro footage. In 2021 I've decided to let it retire :p and going to look for a newer cam.
      But man, budgetcams these days are really bad... Tried a lot of Akaso and other brands. But the image quality of that SJcam was actually still better on 1080p then on 4k on those newly budgetcams. Eventually I've got myself the Action 3, which felt verry decent, but had this focus issue. Even there the SJcam actually looked sharper. Got myself a Hero11 after, which seemed OK and the recordings looked nice. But that camera was suffering from overheating. So returned it too.
      Got myself an Hero12 now (which is actually a Hero11 with customized firmware). And it looks and works good for now. But these prices are insane nowadays. Like $400 for an actioncam.... I really miss the time where $60 budgetcams did a verry decent job. Although SJcam is also not what it was before these days.

    My biggest problem with GoPro was how they are kind of putting a price on everything. You have to buy a camera, which isn’t actually a ton of money. But then, you need mounts, which are ridiculously expensive. And, if you want to edit your footage, you have to buy some subscription for their app, otherwise you are left with the most basic controls there are. You cant’t even control the slow motion in a video without it. If you do use the free version of the app, it is filled with ads for their subscription

      The camera isn't expensive but the mount is?? 500 bucks is cheap but 15 bucks is expensive? And no, you don't need any subscription whatsoever for editing your footage unless you're hellbent on using the worst video editor available... You do not need a subscription to access your own data, that's misinformation. Total bullshit. Control the slow motion in a video without a subscription? EASY. Use any video editor other than "Quik" and simply right click a clip and select "Speed/Duration", change the percentage to under 100% and you've got slow motion. Stop spreading bullshit.

    I started using GoPro’s several years ago. I then got the itch to find out what made them tick. My first repair attempt was to a Hero 4 Black. That didn’t go too well but I didn’t give up. After much practice, I was able to diagnose and repair most models up to the Hero 8. I found that the Hero 3 and 3+ black are solid performers. I believe this to be attributed to the processor vs frame rates and their limited resolution. Hero 4’s we’re hit and miss with most issues caused by poorly made image sensors which caused them to freeze. Moving to the Hero 5, they had serious issues with their ribbon cables. They couldn’t handle the heat and would pretty much break in half at the cable folds which caused the rear display would stop working. Although labeled as waterproof, water intrusion was also a big issue. The Hero 6 had similar issues. GoPro changed processors in the 6. The 6’s were basically an under driven 7. To me, the 7 black is their flagship model. It seems GoPro went back to the drawing board and fixed many of the issues that plagued their previous models. They also added hyper smooth which was an incredible break through. These are a bear to disassemble. They used a serious type of glue/sealer to attach the face plates and once disassembled, they were no longer waterproof. The 8: Why GoPro didn’t go with removable lens protectors is beyond me. Bad idea. I do find the Hero 8 to be fairly reliable if the resolution and frame rates are not pushed too hard. The image stabilization also got better. I found the Hero 4 and 7’s to have the best sound quality.

    I worked as a GoPro Technical Support call center agent for several years. I can't agree enough. I was around during the 3rd and 4th generation products and the Hero 5 was the last camera I touched before leaving. The main issue that I saw is that these cameras are advertised as use these anywhere type of cameras, but they did not work in so many situations. In fact I often spoke with pit crews, tv and film producers, and I often had to be like, GoPro is not what you think it is and here's all of these limitations. They only implemented what they thought was important at HQ, the cameras live in their own ecosystem of proprietary software, file types, and didn't even have something as simple as an HDMI out port at the time. They have always had overheating issues and like he said in the video, they really didn't innovate for a long time. I remember when the Hero 4 Black came out with the first 4K, and it was a big deal, but the camera couldn't reliably get good footage because of all of the issues.

Canon and other brands only label the much more expensive (mib 5000 dolar) extremly big models suitable for that. Also the lenses for shooting with this model costs more than 2000 and you need different angles. And that is cheap compared to film cameras.

    This type of thing has been happening for decades. I remember back in the late 80s and early 90s. Back then, Toshiba made the best laptops in the world. They were so well made. I've actually got a 30 year-old Tosh, running W95 that still works to this day. This particular laptop has been dropped countless times. It has an actual hard drive. What happened with Tosh has also happened to other companies since - it's all about cutting costs from the product. They are constantly cutting costs - they'll redesign the case to cut material and manufacturing costs. They'll cut costs on the PCB - they'll shrink it. They'll replace quality components with cheaper ones that don't last. Every single time their cost-cutting goes too far. It's that simple. Shaving small costs per item can result in hundreds of $MILLIONS of extra profit. It's money men who run these companies and they just want to milk as much as they can from the brand name. You see it happening with cars now - they're all such poor quality now - they're just not designed to last. You see it with chocolate bars - they trim the recipe and hope people don't notice! Any product that is mass produced will go through this. They end up - like Toshiba - taking a top quality product and turning it into a piece of cheap crap and they hope nobody notices. A new company that comes along with a top quality product will end up the same way because of the idiocy that comes from money men running these companies.

    I bought a 10 about 6 months ago. At first it wouldn't charge while in use so the battery went dead and it shut off. After contacting support and going through a manual firmware upgrade process that issue resolved itself and it's been working great. I've been using it inside a race car all summer. To make sure it didn't overheat I ran it off a separate battery and left the regular battery out of the camera, with the battery door off. I know this solution won't work for a lot of people but if you want to use it in a hot dry environment you could try what I did. I've recorded over an hour straight of 4K 60, filled up a 128 GB SD card. Week after week I've been doing this and it's been working. Last week it was cool so I left the battery in the camera but still plugged it into the extra battery to make sure it would run long enough to complete the race. No problems.

Now there are the new, enduro type batteries more or less fixing this problem, but if you are using a standard battery good luck shooting any winter activities like skiing, snowboarding etc... When I first met this issue up on a mountain trying to capture my skiing I just couldn't believe that an action camera, which often advertises itself as THE camera to be used also for winter activities will simply shut down when it's cold outside. Who would have thought that in winter up on a mountain it's usually below freezing...
    With the Hero 7 I also had an issue, one day the camera simply did not charge or turn on anymore, had to buy a new one...
    Other than these I'm still going with GoPro, mainly because I have now everything in their ecosystem, mounts etc... My 8, 9 and Max works now 99% of the time, so I definitely did not abandon it, but would be lying if I did not mention the obvious faults and bugs of GoPro cameras.

    I use GoPro since the GoPro Hero 3, tried other Action-Cams and GoPro is still THE BEST in terms of Imagequality. Facts! And for me as an Videoproducer and FPV pilot this is the only thing that counts.
    ...and i really had no problem with overheating or data losses. the Hero9 crashed after i crashed my FPV drone hardly but, after a restard the video file was there.
    If you use a GoPro in a way its made for, you won't get struggels. If you put a GoPro with 5,3K 60 on a desk and say: "Its garbage, cause it overheats after 30 minutes" its not a fair competition.
    then you also could say "I bought a new Sony Cinema cam, but its garbage cause its waaaaay to clunky and broke after the first crash with my bike." everyone would reply: "buy another cam if you want to make this type of recordings."
    Maybe GoPro is not really innovative in new Camera Design, yes BUT they don't have to. If GoPro would release let's say a new fancy magnetic mount they will piss off all GoPro owners that has collected mounts and accessory's since the first days. I love the fact, that i bought ND Filters and the Mediamod for my Hero 9 and can use the same gear even on the new Hero11. Its Awesome!
    GoPro innovates with things the 8:7 Sensor. So DJI made a mounting-system wich make it easy to swap from horizontal to vertical but with GoPro you don't have to because you can shoot horizontal and vertical at the same time. Thats quite innovative if you ask me.

    So true, I'm with gopro since gopro 7 and tested all them until 11. Stability of the software is indeed bad, but you don't have to take out the battery - click and hold both power and mode buttons for a while.
    Mini is a good step for overheating - at least there is a metal part that could take out the heat (but not that much), unfortunately I see the gopro mini has a big venerability - the door is so thin it bend easily, especially when the camera is warm or when it's warm outside. After that the camera is not that well water-resistant. Solution - put it in the diving case, but then overheating...

    Lots of good info in here. Some thoughts - other companies have to innovate to compete with GoPro’s status and market share. While it’s not favorable for GoPro to coast for a bit, they have the power to do just that. The Hero 11 Black Mini is significantly cheaper than the Hero 11 Black to capture more of the lower end of the market, and removing the screen is part of what enables them to do so. Lastly, I would recommend buying items like this directly from the manufacturer. Will let you know if I have issues with my first-ever GoPro soon!

      @Entropy512 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah. I am honestly surprised at how little innovation has been happening in the industry - to the point where GoPro (and most of their competitors) basically gave up huge market segments.
      Rather than add a wired remote control interface to better integrate with multicopter platforms, they basically forced DJI, Yuneec, and everyone else in that industry to spin up their own camera development teams to meet their requirements. By then, too late - that market is almost completely shut out from them.
      To this day, no one making action cameras is offering a decent wired remote control interface, and GoPro is going to the point of actively DRMing their interfaces so innovative accessory manufacturers are locked out.

    • @Real_MisterSir
      @Real_MisterSir ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Entropy512 What I'd love to see them innovate on, is size. Don't care much for 4k, 2.7k and below is just fine for general media content and not full professional scale production.
      And small means light, and small+light means durable. Small+light+durable means you can be much more creative with your mounting methods and places - which is what initially got GoPro their fame. People would slap them everywhere because they could endure it, at a time where no competitor could do that with the same degree of video quality.
      So if I was to get back into the market (after being out for a decade since I bought my old Hero3 Black), this is what I would look for:
      - 2.7k footage at 60fps
      - Size at least 2/3 of current, even less if possible
      - Weight 2/3 of current
      - Price 2/3 of current
      No screens, no fancy stuff. Image stabilization would be great, if possible. Other than that, nothing. Rather have a simple but functioning package, than an overcomplicated one that is prone to error and costs way too much. It's a camera after all, not a laptop.

    I have the 11 Black and had zero issues with it so far. When you think about the trade off, like, what you are paying and what the camera does plus the myriad of accessories out there, it is still the most versatile camera that works for nearly everything when you compare to competition. Instead of buying one camera for each and every activity, vloggling, biking, car racing, skydiving, snowboarding, etc, etc, getting the gopro and the accessories you need is still the best option. Faulty products exist (and I'm not on GoPro's side here by any means) and always will.

  • @Real_MisterSir
    @Real_MisterSir ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The real problem is 2 things:
    1. Pricing
    2. Losing focus on their own core selling point
    I was among the first waves of people to jump on the GoPro wagon. My buddy had an early Hero2 we used for parkour, and I got myself a Hero3 Black a year later for skiing and parkour.
    Back then GoPro were absolutely industry leading in image quality, durability, and price for quality.
    But what made them really popular, was that they were a simple but complete package.
    Their reliability was world famous, you'd see them in their cases thrown at literally anything - explosions, rally cars, extreme sports, people would treat the cameras like hot garbage but their well designed cases and sturdy internals would power through anything. It was the Nokia of the camera world, and unlocked the possibility to film things that could never have been filmed before. And people got creative with them.
    However, at some point down the line, they introduced case-less cams, integrated screens, sensitive internal hardware, all these little things that added more potential points for failure, combined with an ever increasing cost.
    What used to be a relatively cheap, good quality, highly durable and compact camera - was now expensive, tech reliant, and prone to failure. All the modern features are "nice to have", but they end up compromising on the "need to have's". The need for reliability, the need for good quality at affordable price, the need for ease of use and simplicity. All sacrificed for unnecessary luxuries that never made their cams what they were.
    When competitors became better and offered comparable image quality for lower price, instead of fighting on their pricepoint, GoPro went all in on adding more features, thus raising prices even further. When I see their prices today it sickens me. If I was 15 years old again, I would never go to GoPro first like I did back then. I simply wouldn't be able to afford it. And killing your future market at an early stage is never a clever idea, and the result of their actions have now caught up with them.
    My old Hero3 Black still captures full HD at 60fps, what more do most people realistically need? Sure 4k 60 is achievable today at the same price point, but a screen? A non-sturdy battery you can't easily hotswap? A camera that doesn't have a case to protect itself, thus the internals take the brunt of any force thrown at it.. Self-facing screen - is this an action cam or a smartphone??
    In reality, the recipe GoPro should take is the following:
    - 4K 60, 1440 60, 1080 120
    - Updated exterior case
    - Modern bulk Lithium battery
    - Half price
    Then you can have stuff like an accessory lightweight attachable rear screen for those who want it, etc.

      @matthewschumacher8483 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it's not worth half the price, it's worth it's price. There's no camera like the GoPro, it beats every competitor almost everywhere. Lol I don't mean to be a dick but if you can't afford it ($500) then it isn't for you, just don't trash it.
