I noticed that Sailor Moon manga has potential for very, very grim final: that Sailor Moon's destiny was always to destroy Chaos and Galactic Cauldron for a price of wiping all life in Universe from existence, i.e: losing friends, losing her love, and becoming Sailor Cosmos, lone deity in empty, cold space. If this guess is correct, this pretty much destroys many childhoods.
I mean, we did, but it was called Crystal/Eternal and, after years of people asking for a remake closer to the manga, people who preferred the 90s anime by that time outnumbered those people and hated it.
@@ChuckyBeingChucky The animation, I'll give you, though much of the errors were fixed for the Blu-ray. But the breakneck pace was a side effect of being true to the manga, where characters are similarly introduced and killed off in very quick succession.

Italian anime: the Three Lights are actually the twin brothers of the Sailor Starlights and are definitely not cross dressers/transgender! (In the manga they cross dress as men but in the anime they're biological men that turn into women when they transform) (Apparently, the Italian dub was concerned that either explanation would turn boys homosexual so they made the two identities into separate characters who coincidentally never shared screen time...)
"dumpling (odango) head" vs "meatball head" is all thanks to 4Kids and their inability to let anything from Japanese culture reach the children of the US... Honestly, just thank the gods that we never actually got the fully Americanized version of Sailor Moon

To clarify at least one important point: This video leaves out an important time loop. The events from the end of the first season (not including the filler/non-canon Al and Anne arc) to when Rini travels back in time are not documented. According to the manga, when Usagi and Mamoru came of age (I believe Usagi was 21 or 22), they married. At that point, she came into her powers as Neo Queen Serenity and Mamoru came into his powers as King Endymion. The healing and purification of Earth began, and Small Lady/Rini was born; as the purification spread throughout Earth, people began to have longer and longer lifespans. Small Lady never matured and was stuck in a pre-powered juvenile form which caused her embarrassment and ridicule, which drove her to Pluto for her only friendship. Those who did not agree to the purification became the second season antagonists, whose purpose in coming back to the 20th century was to prevent Sailor Moon/Tuxedo Mask from coming to power in the first place. Of course after their defeat, the (relatively near) future marriage of Usagi and Mamoru was still a go, so Rini's existence was not (yet) threatened. Treating time as linear here is a mistake; even if defeating all antagonists through Season 4 allowed Rini to still exist, the loop that created her had to stay intact. Season 5 changed that drastically. In the anime, we get this neat resolution where everyone is still existing in the late 20th century, but the manga explains that everyone in reality lost their 20th century corporeal forms (they died yet their Star Seeds remained intact), and after given the choice to remain together, they were reborn in the 30th century, when Usagi and Mamoru finally had the chance to marry and bring the new Silver Millennium into existence. The manga also explained that the Quartet, after being revealed as Chibi-Usa's future guardian soldiers, went back to sleep/stasis until their appropriate time in the distant future. It's a shame this was never fleshed out properly in the original anime, whether due to time constraints or just wanting a current day resolution rather than a future one. I personally like the manga ending much better, and it answers story questions in a far more satisfying way.
>>>but the manga explains that everyone in reality lost their 20th century corporeal forms (they died yet their Star Seeds remained intact), and after given the choice to remain together, they were reborn in the 30th century, when Usagi and Mamoru finally had the chance to marry and bring the new Silver Millennium into existence. do you remember the act number for this? thanks.

When I watched this show on weekday afternoons I was in grade school still about almost all of this information went right over my head about all I understood at that time was that it was about a group of schoolgirls who were crimefighters, had superpowers, were extraterrestrial in origin, and sometimes had very amusing, and at other times downright hilarious interactions with a superpowered, crimefighting, schoolboy,of about the same age who also happened to be of extraterrestrial origin ,often were a top-hat,and was a recurring love-interest of one or more of the aforementioned schoolgirls!!!
btw the "weird grade" thing is because the Japanese school system starts in April. So ... she was still in Grade 8. Not again, just still there. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
Thanks for that. She goes into High School 1st grade, or 10th grade, at the beginning of Season 4, hence the new uniforms. Which means Seasons 1 to 3 take place during 8th and 9th grade only.
When I was real young, I watched Sailor Moon on VHS dubs. I thought I imagined that Usagi was once called Serena. Now watching them again on Hulu and the names are all different. Glad to know that I didn't make that up in my memories
ChibiUsa is almost 3000 years old. She was frozen in time and as a last resource, she went back in time to save her mom and dad. Also, that was another of the reasons she was tempted into the dark side... to grow up.
Hawk Eye, Tigers Eye and Fish Eye were my absolute FAVOURITE enemy trio. I loved how they have been redeemed by Pegasus and can have dreams of their own. I don't know why but this is my favourite arc
i really like them too! i was shocked after watching eternal movie 1 and realizing my favorite villains were just there for fillers. like, after watching three seasons of crystal, i knew things were fast and expected them to die without being redeemd but that was too fast! they got like 15 minutes of screen time in total.
Yeah I feel like it would've been a bit more cohesive to choose one, then maybe explain the others in another video or at the end. But I say this as an avid Sailor Moon fan who actually never saw the dub as a kid (so I only saw the sub), and I've read the manga, so I was able to follow along for the most part.
Spiffy Lady oh please! I think this was GREAT! She clearly made points so that people see what actually happened in the manga which not a lot of people know. If someone couldn’t keep up, it means they’re lacking a couple neurons
It's good you covered some differences between the manga and anime, but you forgot the whole thing about Galaxia in relation to Chibi-Chibi (who has a different role in the manga) and Sailor Cosmos. Would have been nice if you mentioned this, too
@@abbyeom4307 I always saw Cosmos as the 'Ultimate Sailor Moon'. Chibi Chibi is just Sailor Cosmos, I saw it as how Sailor Chibi-Usa is small/young even if she's way older. And the the 'fairy type being' is Guardian Cosmos who basically guards the Galaxy Cauldron.
That whole thing is confusing... Then again, the timeline here is a bit awkward too. Time travel just makes everything 1000x more confusing, along with reincarnations...
Cosmos is *********spoiler alert********** the sailor form taken by the last fragments of sailor star seeds, remaining from the end of the time, which has all the sailorpower! Anyway, long long time ago, in the past, Sailor Cosmos and Sailor Chaos fighted each other and it's revealed in the last number of the manga!
Far more useful in the manga where he has a larger repertoire of powers/abilities and attacks. The anime just never really expanded on it because they were focusing on girl power and having the girls save the day or being cheerleaded by Mamoru.
This sounds like me trying to explain a long story through a text message. “So this happened but it happened because this happened that happened before that happened the first happened. But that happened because the second happened and then I’m not there but I am there later not right now but you need to know cuz then you won’t understand why I’m not in there but on there because this happened”
As a kid I understood the time line.... Now I'm just thinking of all the little kitty gritty details that would have made the time line not work? I'm so confused 😄
Sailor Moon in an nutshell: Villains with a really basic goal and motivation with very little backstory Everyone dies at the end of the season Everyone also keeps on getting reincarnated A bunch of mini bosses
When she said why is she liking this anime which has weird plots and twist. That hit me so hard. I mean for real, everyone or just me love this show because of the art/animation quality and aesthetics and NOT the storyline.
Are you really complaining about Sailor Moon's plot? Have you read the DC and Marvel's thousands reboots and parallel earths? That is confusing! SM universe is understandable and it makes sense. The storyline is amazing and that's why I like it so much. I can't see a cosmical error like I see in the american comic books. They need to use parallel earths and they mess with the reality so hard that you get confused about which one is the actual reality. In SM you are in one unique reality that is sometimes disturbed by the enemies and if something happens in the past it has consequences in the future. For me, the only thing that is not good is that there are some major differences between the manga and the anime and some stories are better in the anime.
1. Outher Senshi protect the Solar System from outside invaders not inner invaders hence why they didn't help during Crystal Tokyo's attack. That's why they came to their defence during the death busters + Galaxias fight, because they came from outside the Solar System. 2. Sailor Moon transformed into Neo Queen Serenity not Princess Serenity, thou, I believe Neo Serenity, trough the Silver Crystal, took over Sailor Moon's body to A save Small Lady and B finish the battle she lost in the future. 3. Serenity took the throne at 22 became Neo Queen Serenity and gave birth to Chibiusa post Ice time. 4. Why leaving out Sailor Cosmos aka Chibi Chibi's Galaxia's and Chaos's story, Manga + Anime. Good video thou.
ok I agree with most except 2. Shes does not turn into "Neo Queen" Shes doesnt become a queen until she takes the thrones. shes a princess as in princess serenity un till at 22 shes takes the thrones
@@wisewillow7530Yes, indeed she becomes queen at 22, like I stated but the one fighting Wiseman is Neo Queen Serenity not Sailor Moon or Princess Serenity. In the series you clearly see how it's Neo Queen Serenity, they even call her NEO QUEEN SERENITY NOT PRINCESS. And as Sailor Moon is about to use the Silver Crystal Neo Queen Serenity jumps in and takes Sailor Moons place to defeat Wiseman. Serenity's body in the future may be asleep but she still able to use her powers just like she does in the manga where she kicks Black Lady out of the palace and thats how in the in the 90's anime she manifests in Sailor Moon ( takes over her body ) to defeat Wiseman. Plus she's wearing her Crown while doing so...
@@wisewillow7530 Usagi becomes Neo Queen serenity during a coronation ceremony. Mamoru and Usagi are recognized by Helios as king and queen of the earth, if the anime did this correctly this would be at the end of the Super S Arc, but they leave it out entirely...
You did an amazing job keeping it straight, just one thing....Usagi turns 15 in season 3 there is a birthday episode. Also in seasonn 4 when asked how old she is, she says "I'm 15 and a half". She turns 16 in season 5. The whole situation with her still being 14 in season 2 is chalked up to time rewinding itself thus why their memories are wiped at first. The anime just made things confusing, really. The manga didn't bother with memory wiping ::shrug::
The memory wiping was to have filler while Naoko writes the manga. Filler = Noncanon. Time was not reset because we see a Jadeite in a play, and also Sailor Moon is popular enough in 52 that kids in school know of her. Shingo also knows who Sailor Moon is in the play episode in the same filler arc. This could not be possible as the Sailor Senshi would've only been around for 4 episodes, and each time they were around no one was there to see them.
@@JadeiteMcSwag I know why they chose to have the memory wipe, but that's the general explanation of why she's still 14 in season 2, that time rewound. As for the puppet show you are referring to, animators don't always follow continuity

Whoa.. that was some research and love you gave that timeline, Cristal. 1st anime i ever saw as a kid. According to this, seems like i saw only 5% of the whole series. Lol!
The thing is, it's not right to mix the anime and the manga in anything. Because, while most stories tend to differ in their manga/anime counterparts in Sailor Moon's case they are totally different things, like, totally. I mean, many of the characters remain but their personalities/motives/actions vastly disagree. Not to mention events and the way the story unfolds.
I'm currently rewatching the show from start to finish for the 3rd time, I'm in the middle of season 2, and I have this to say: Don't ask questions. Ever. It's for your own sanity, trust me.
I enjoyed this video! Just a note tho, there’s no Princess Usagi... it’s either Usagi, Princess Serenity or Neo Queen Serenity. I thought maybe you were joking the first time you used her name that way but then you said it again lol.... it can also be a bit confusing for the viewer mixing the Japanese with the OG English dub. It would have been better and an easier watch to just stay strictly Japanese as of 2019, we have a nearly complete new English dub that is more true to the Japanese.

This is extremely well researched. Only correction, however: the 2nd season wipes the first season entirely. What you're referring to as the Black Moon arc part 1 (which is actually the Doom Tree/Makaiju arc), Usagi is actually still 14. She turns 15 in Sailormoon S, and is 16 when Stars ends.
It’s cool that you were able to pinpoint the events of the show, however you mixed up a lot of the series lore. You kept using the manga’s lore as if it were part of the anime’s history when they are two different versions of Sailor Moon.
11:42 - I actually purchased the Sailor Moon soundtrack back in 1996 when the dubbed version was first airing in Canada on a station called YTV (Shout out to anyone who remembers that station! I actually met PJ Paul and PJ Phil once). I was in 8th grade and the soundtrack was epic! Ok, sorry... Sailor Moon Super Fan Girl Rant S has now ended.
I came here to finally piece it all together, after having only watched the English dub. I still have no idea what is going on. Way too confusing. Lol still a great show though
Girlfriend, I have been watching Sailor Moon since day one, I read the manga years and years ago, I thought I knew it all, but I didn't. This summary makes many things clear. Great Job and so entertaining.
I've read the entire manga and seen all of the anime but never realized how complicated sailor moon is. I feel like everything made more sense in the manga.
I'm sorry but....this video is all over the place. Character names, episode names, and various terms keep switching back and forth between the dub names and the original names, manga details are included that are not part of the 90s canon, and some facts are just flat out incorrect. I appreciate the effort in trying to piece together the Sailor Moon timeline but.... this ain't it, chief.
@Gabriel Except that they're not whiny and wrong... most of the events she gives are from the 90s anime. Especially the rainbow crystals, Galaxia's backstory, and Nehelenia's backstory. She can't decide if she wants to follow the manga events or 90s events and is inconsistent with her naming since she switches between the dub names and terms to the original names and terms every few minutes.
i agree. there are some major inaccuracies in here. for instance, the sailor war took place thousands of years before the initial events of beryl destroying the moon kingdom. and beryl was never reborn. she was sealed away with metalia.
@@geoffreybrowne5191 I think Crystal may have caused some inaccuracies with the whole Beryl thing. I believe Crystal implied that Beryl and the Four Heavenly Kings DID get reborn, but Beryl was the first to discover D-Point and "awaken" Metalia again, and she managed to lure the Generals again, too. Or maybe I'm remembering a doujinshi? But I swear I saw an artic explorer Beryl at some point.
@@azuritemoon well, if anything, crystal is correct as it is based off the manga. typically in the sailor verse, evil entities are sealed away and only forces of good are reborn. at least they are when it comes to the silver crystal. plus, being reborn usually involves having your memory erased. i'm pretty certain beryl was sealed away in the arctic and finally gathered the strength to break free.

I'm kind of sad that Sailor Venus's solo adventures weren't elaborated on. In the manga, she fought a bunch of idols and models from "The Dark Agency." To clarify at least one important point: This video leaves out an important time loop.
I personally like the manga ending much better, and it answers story questions in a far more satisfying way.
>>>but the manga explains that everyone in reality lost their 20th century corporeal forms (they died yet their Star Seeds remained intact), and after given the choice to remain together, they were reborn in the 30th century, when Usagi and Mamoru finally had the chance to marry and bring the new Silver Millennium into existence.

this is the most interesting history lesson ever
When I watched this show on weekday afternoons I was in grade school still about almost all of this information went right over my head about all I understood at that time was that it was about a group of schoolgirls who were crimefighters, had superpowers, were extraterrestrial in origin, and sometimes had very amusing, and at other times downright hilarious interactions with a superpowered, crimefighting, schoolboy,of about the same age who also happened to be of extraterrestrial origin ,often were a top-hat,and was a recurring love-interest of one or more of the aforementioned schoolgirls!!!
🤣🤣🤣
I'm a simple person, I see Sailor Moon, I click...

In the latinamerican spanish dub she was always named Serena, though to their credit, they respected most of the original plot.

When she said why is she liking this anime which has weird plots and twist. That hit me so hard.
I mean for real, everyone or just me love this show because of the art/animation quality and aesthetics and NOT the storyline.
I love the storyline more than the aesthetic- is that weird???? I've never fully understood the full story but that's what keeps me coming back to it!
We love the stories/story line, the timeline isn't that important.

When Chibi became a scout it was basically her body being like "okay resume growing now, have some puberty"
I like how in the anime Saturn's dad stays alive. It gives him a second chance and a start over. It's quite wholesome ☺️
I was about to comment the same thing!

@Gabriel Except that they're not whiny and wrong... most of the events she gives are from the 90s anime. Especially the rainbow crystals, Galaxia's backstory, and Nehelenia's backstory. It’s also a play on the fact that when you write out the kana: REDDO KUROU, it sounds like RED crow which is her colour scheme (more of a red-orange, but still).
@@buggz4568 Do not ever say scientists are not creative...lol
No. Aluminium is a metal. Aluminum is nothing, as it does not exist.
@@buggz4568 Yes but you do not really need a degree in science (chemistry with specialization in pharmacy to be exact, in the case of Takeuchi Naoko) to come up with that stuff.... clearly her passion for gemstones and chemistry did influence her work though.
@@Harkeilla Both aluminum and aluminium are correct. The modern distinction between these two terms is clear: aluminum is correct in American English, as well as Canadian English, while aluminium is correct in British English
Good job! I love your super duper detailed timeline explanation!
Seriously!! 1 minute in & my mind is BLOWN 🤤
Switching between the English and Japanese names seems to have caused some mistakes o.o;.
This is why I watch the viz media dub
And just when you thought this was a simple show with girls who change into magical clothes.
what about sailor cosmos?
the future sailor moon?
you know, the whole thingy with her being alone in the future and losing her hope so dumping her problems on our sailor as they all seem to
Somehow it is more complicated when it’s explained than just going with the flow as you watch😂
I grew up watching Sailor Moon... it was one of my favorite shows. Now, my daughters (11 and 9) are obsessed with the show (we've been watching the Viz dub on Hulu). When we're done with the shows and movies (or at least after the Chibi-Usa storyline and reveal), I'll have them watch this timeline video. 👍😄
Thanks for a great breakdown and timeline!
You forgot to mention in 1949 Sailor Senshi, Popeye.
_Paws_ He doesn't exist in the Sailor Moon series. This video is talking about events that happened in this series.
@@LuigiTheMetal64 it's the r/wooooshh time
Popeye was the first princess on moon kingdom waaaaaaaaaay before princess Pluto, and got forgotten:-:
HAHAHAHAHAHA OMG! You cracked me up
Well.....
That was fun and extremely informative.
As far as favorite Sailor Scout.
Jupiter she’s tall cute and likes to cook, and I lie to eat!
Lol.. SAME. I was 14 and like.. Sailor Jupiter is a straight bae 😍. haha pretty funny in retrospect.
Jupiter is a sociopath and attempts to ruin the relationship of Motoki and Reika by sending Reika to Africa so she can date Motoki who she only met 4 episodes prior. She also made her friends sleep outside in the rain for a boy she didn't know. She also trained an entire episode in 105 but still jobbed to Yaten (base) in 193.
@@JadeiteMcSwag thankfully this is all not cannon.
So awesome that you added manga information!^^
Some things were left out, like Fiore or Sailor Cosmos, but good video though.
The "eternal sleep" thing wasn't a mistranslation, actually it's the same in Japanese!
Also the cats don't die at the end of season 1.
Yes, it was revelead how old Usagi was when she became Neo Queen: 22. And then they all stopped aging. Also, Chibiusa stole the key in the manga and in the anime it was Sailor Pluto sending her back! (Which didn't make sense.)
And no, Saphir doesn't love Emerald?
I'm getting goosebumps as you told the story because I freaking love this show - rewatched it so many times T_T
This is the first video I see of your channel, because I just recently ended the anime. And the fact that you mentioned Buffy, wich is a series I love so much just as Sailor Moon, got me shooked. Subscribed!!!! 💜 Congrats on the great work ✨
As one of those that watched Sailor Moon on the USA network back in the mid-90's, I have to say I've never thought of the timeline this way...
Watched it on Cartoon Network in the afternoon after middle school. Uranus and Neptune weren’t in it I dont think ...And i am Not sure if that’s Because they came later (I don’t think dubbed version was very many seasons)... or they cut those two out intentionally. It was the nineties after all. Not sure cn would be down to address their relationship or bother to edit out their obviously not familial bond
@@rebeccasuraci7666 Sailor Moon and (part of) Sailor Moon R were released first. Sailor Moon S was released later, and that's where Uranus and Neptune appear. They said they were "cousins" to hide the fact that they're close because they're a couple
I'm kind of sad that Sailor Venus's solo adventures weren't elaborated on. In the manga, she fought a bunch of idols and models from "The Dark Agency." She's saved multiple times in the second volume by a Tuxedo Mask-looking guy, who turns out to be the head of the Dark Agency. Venus falls in love with him, and is crushed to find out that he's working for the baddies. She kills him, but finds out that the real head of the Dark Agency is Kunzite, and the entire agency was a subsection of the Dark Kingdom, which Venus can't take on by herself. The Sailor V manga ends with Venus going on a quest to find the other Sailor Senshi so she can stop the Dark Kingdom once and for all. Her solo story makes the scene near the end of the Dark Kingdom manga make a lot more sense. (In the manga Venus is the one who kills Queen Beryl, who is mentioned as the boss of the boss of the Dark Agency.)
Ail and Anne are from Alabama, I understand it now.
So thank you for literally giving me all the knowledge and none at the same time.
You are awesome
This isn’t confusing. Makes perfekt sense. Great job!
