I enjoyed the video, but you don't really answer the question in the title... It should have been "History of Magical Girl"! And I wish you talked a little bit more about Sailor Moon, it was so important for the genre!
This might actually be the best-researched summary of the genre I've seen, and all in only fifteen minutes! You cover the major eras -- including the thematic aspects! Most people neglect that the genre is rooted in helping normal people with normal problems -- as well as how and _why_ it developed as it did. To my surprise, I wasn't aware of Poitrine until now, so even I learned something. I think it would have been worth being more clear that going dark places wasn't something new to Madoka (and maybe talk a bit about Madoka's imitators and how its longer-term influence has parallels with mecha post-Evangelion). I think it's also important to keep the audience dichotomy more firmly in mind because, for example, Nanoha and Yuuki Yuuna do NOT have the same primary audience as Precure and Aikatsu.
My absolute favorite Magical Girl anime is Cardcaptor Sakura! I even dreamed of having a friend like Sakura as a kid. I also have two decks of Clow cards! One from when the English version was airing and a 20th anniversary edition set. o7
And let's not forget Miraculous Ladybug, the French take on magical girls/superheroes. Interesting video! (CardCaptor Sakura was and will always be the best. ❤️)
I'm french, Ladybug is not really a magical girl. She is just a superhero. It's same as Peter being a Spider but his spider become his friends. She is too much superhero to be a magical girl. She is not even seen and define as a magical girl here. The real french magical girls are the Lolirock.
No mention of the 70's live action transformations with Wonder Woman and Secrets of Isis. And no, He-Man wouldn't be the first magical boy. Billy Batson aka Captain Marvel (now named Shazam) has him beat by several decades. He also had his sister, Mary Batson as Mary Marvel, his friend Freddy Freeman as Captain Marvel Jr. There are also the Lieutenant Marvels, Hoppy the Marvel Bunny, Talky Tawny, and Uncle Marvel. They're balanced by Black Adam and Sabbac. Isis, who is at first the exact character from Secrets of Isis (called Mighty Isis as Captain Marvel and Isis had a few team ups on the live action show) and later just an homage since DC didn't own the character, would join later.. along with much, much, much later a younger brother named Osiris and his crocodile pet Sobek. Also the long running Sentai series and Kamen Rider used transformation as well... Also early magical boy is Ayumu Aikawa from Kore wa Zonbi Desu ka or Is This a Zombie?
Wider feet means bigger area, bigger area means more paddling power, considering how much of that world is literally just the ocean, those might be less "feet" and more "flippers"
I would say to balance the style of the characters being very tall. See Charles Schulz advising Jim Davis on drawing Garfield standing upright for the first time on his TV special: www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/starsandstories/5099241/Garfields-Fun-Fest-Jim-Davis-interview.html

Little bit sad sad that you didn't mention W.I.T.C.H. or even Winx Club. IDK much about Winx Club but i know that the idea W.I.T.C.H. when it was proposed to DIsney Italia was met at first with rebutal because they legit thought the manga style and the magical girl trope would never work out in europe. The first publication was a huge sucess and W.I.T.C.H. became their biggest sucess during the 2000's. (a shame that the cartoon didn't get that popular tho)
I'll always love Cardcaptor Sakura. No one beats CLAMP when it comes to character design, especially costume design, storylines, and crazy plot twists out of left field. The big twist in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle about Clow Kingdom shook my whole world.
Very interesting video, I did not expect that much history behind this. I haven't watched that many Magical Girl shows but my current favourite is Yuki Yuna is a Hero. That show really helped me during my darker days, but I'll admit that what got me into Magical Girl shows is PMMM. And I used to enjoy Winx Club when I was much younger.
Thank you for this informative, inclusive, and thorough video about Magical Girl history. I was so happy that Earth Defense Club was mentioned. Thank you so much!
8:35 Actually, I clicked here because I hope you would mention Pretty Cure. I’m not big on anime but I love the heck out of this series ever since I watched the first season Pretty Cure and then later Smile Pretty Cure (AKA Glitter Force). Thanks for elaborating on the history of the genre of entertainment.
Cutie Honey should get waaaaay more credit than it does. It was the first anime geared towards a male audience revolving around a female character. And despite the fanservice, honey kisaragi really holds her own in and out of battle, shes witty, fun, and easygoing and independent.
If you're looking for more magical boy series, Detective Loki Ragnarok (who even has a grown up man transformation as well as a wand transformation you can sync with the CCS transformation music.) comes to mind. Utena somewhat inverts the trope and features magical boy transformations (Akio) who is also *spoiler* her series villain and an evil adult man who literally uses sex to control people. Another fun magical girl series is Pretear, where the transformation sequence is rarely stock footage, though it's a short series. As mentioned by someone else Princess Tutu is a great magical girl/boy/duck series, with lots of transformations all around and features battle ballet! And of course there is Fruit Basket, where the main female character is not magical, but the men and boys around her regularly transform. Keroro Gunsou plays with a lot of tropes including magical girls in the form of Angol Mois.
Always found it funny how those transformations also worked as paper thin disguise. Still boggles my mind that no one ever recognised Usagi and her friends. BTW I love your videos, keep them coming!
Ben10 is technically a magical boy? Hmm what about Danny Phantom too? Granted he’s more of a ghost boy than a magical boy, but he still has the catch phrase, transition, and unique powers. Regardless, I’m here for magical boys if that means I can be one too.
What about mermaid melody? I mean it's baisically(?) a magical girl anime. Mermaids using a pearl inside a necklace to transform into a human, but they have two human forms. One of those look like a normal human and the other looks like their mermaid form just with legs and beautiful dresses. And also they fight and defeat their enemy's with singing.....
Mermaid Melody is great and will forever hold a place in my heart. It seems as though there were a lot of magical girl anime that weren't mentioned in this video, mostly just the ones that influenced or show the development of the genre
I'm so glad I came across this video while randomly searching stuff on youtube. thank you so much for all that information! I now have a giant list of animations I can't wait to watch haha 💕
Shugo Chara isn't really a magical girl anime, as their transformations don't have a purpose in say, fighting or helping/saving people. Their transformations were supposed to be better versions of themselves
Shugo Chara we can unhapply say that just followed the tropes and didn't changed anything in the industry even being a good show, but yeah, disappointing that not even Ikuto nor Tadase were mentioned in the magical boys section
I was hoping to hear about Mermaid Melody, Tokyo Mew Mew, Sugar Sugar Rune.. but instead wasted 10 minutes listening about more random stuff than sailor moon which is the reason I clicked
I got this recommended and finally somebody paid full tribute on my favorite show Pretty Cure (or Precure in Japan). It's not confirmed, since the episode wasn't broadcasted yet, but after 15 years of being a huge franchise in Japan, Pretty Cure might officially introduce a magical boy for the first time. (I will try and edit this comment, if it's important to anyone xD). In my opinion, as I am a big fan of the magical girl genre, the magical girl franchise changed a lot in a way that it tries to be more and more criticizing considering Japanese slow development of their society. The flashy and long transformations (*and attacks!*) seem to become more and more a way to express that *your dreams can come true*. Thus, making it an important topic of the whole season/series these days, especially in idol animes and especially in Pretty Cure. And also, making magical girl transformations more important than ever nowadays. While transformation scenes used to be -more or less- a way to fulfill wishes, they seem to become more and more representative of what the characters need to be/become in order to be a fulfilled human being. Sakura of Card Captor Sakura used to be a very naive and silly girl that got pushed into this whole world of magic and needs to become a strong magician in order to rescue the world by catching the different cards. In the current season of Pretty Cure (2018/19 is the year of Hugtto! PreCure) the leader turns into Cure Yell, trying to be very cheerful and encouraging to the people that mean a lot to her in her life, even though her past was completely different. You mentioned this border between being a young girl and an adult woman in older series' premises. To me these borders have shifted, making a "transformation scene" an act of encouragement(?) where girls change from their young and unknown self into a powerful and empowered one. Body morphing/shifting isn't necessarily the upmost importance anymore, but it does appear here and there, as seen in mascots that can turn into human beings (as seen in Yes! Pretty Cure 5) or in Mahou Tsukai Pretty Cure (Magic Users Pretty Cure). I could go on and on about this topic, but if anyone's felt like reading it, I would love their contribution or even a second part to this video: What has become of magical girl animes in modern times compared to former ones? PS: Sadly the French x Global production Miraculous Ladybug wasn't mentioned, which was based on countless Japanese and Toei's franchises such as Sailor Moon, Pretty Cure or Dragoball, which would have been nice, since the transformations introduce a complete change of character, which is in line with my comment about the shifting borders of magical transformations nowadays.
I mean it's kind of a given. I only wished that current She-Ras transformation had the golden glitter. But it surely has it's ups. But I of course loved He-Mans transformation which is of course purely magical and he yes therefore is a magical "Boy" (even inherited as such with a deep history) Love the grenre!
My first anime was Cardcaptor Sakura, I first watched it with my mother, when I was like 1, and it was on VHS. Once, I remember when I was three, my mom wasn't home, I found the tape and put it into the VHS player. My mom has a cosplay prop of the cardcaptor cards still.
LOL at the way she just cavalierly says "Everything a 15 year old me could want --- cute this, cute that, decapitation" and then proceeds to say "ya know, all that warm and fuzzy stuff".
Im glad to know I wasnt the only one who made the mistake of having Madoka Magica be their first magical girl anime... dont get me wrong its my favorite anime lol but that 3rd episode had me shook
Exactly what I was thinking! It's basically like how Japan viewed the original PPG, and transformed some things to make it into its own show. Things like more cuteness, adding in the magical girl element, trying more out-there stories, bringing in new unique characters also while putting in existing characters, adjusting characterizations, putting a different spin on character relations between the 3 main girls and everyone else, among other changes that helped it try and stand out to differentiate it from the original series and still share the name (and adding a Z to it for flair). Basically becoming a magical girl version of the Powerpuff Girls while it marches to its own drum with a Japanese flavour to help spice things up a bit. Having loved the anime when I first found about it and watched it (I don't mind what it changed, I really enjoyed what it did,) it got me further interested in anime from that point, and I've been able to find what I like about anime through shows like these (alongside other aspects of the entertainment medium). Pretty Cure also helped me out with that when it aired in Canada on YTV, as I remember glimpsing at what I could see about it and later watching whatever I could back then, I loved that series too when I got to see all of the first season. It was magically uplifting to know that, throughout my life, there was always something I can gravitate toward to whenever I'm down in life, whether it's a game, movie, TV show, friends or family or anything else really, I can bring myself back up no problem as I have myself emotionally covered. And PPGZ is partly to thank for that, as well as so many other things in my life.
Cutie Honey started it. And that's because of Kamen Rider's popularity. So thank Go Nagai and Shotaro Ishinomori. But don't forget to love non-transforming magical girls as well. My firsts are: Super Pig, Sailor Moon, Card Captor, Majokko Megu-chan (Bia). I forgot which I watch first.
You guys should do one on the history of the Phantom Thief in anime. Although present in Sailor Moon and other anime, it isn't necessarily a parallel or opposite to magical girl, but it's own theme altogether. With Lupin III's granddad Arsene Lupin being the archetype.
12:34 *mouth drops open* I don't know what to do with this. And in general, I'm kinda triggered that you keep pointing at me! Great video. Learned some new things.
My question is: why don't the other people attack the person transforming while they are transforming, especially people who have fought them multiple times and know they will lose if they allow said person to transform?
Well sometimes transformations do get attempts of interruption from the villains like "Oh No You Don't!" but usually the transformation is too OP to be stopped or some ally helped to negate that interruption etc. It's sorta a nice break of cliche but it is rare indeed.
I can't give source bcs it was a long time ago and idk if i can find it, but i came across a tumblr post where someone asked the same question. Apparently there was a japanese talkshow where someone asked a magical girl anime creator this question, and with pretty cure as example, the guy went "well we don't know this but light actually have weight, and when magical girls transform they use the power of light intensified to change their forms. They're actually the strongest when they transform. If a villain try to get them then the light will simply crush them with the weight and they will die". Now i'm not invoking realism or science accuracy here bcs, yknow, magical girl, but i'm just laughing at the implication of a villain feeling smart and wanting to get the girl while transforming and immediately poofing into dust.
Depends on the series but there’s several common cases. 1) The transformation is purely visual and is actually nearly instant. Ex; Ben’s alien transformations from Ben 10 are instantaneous. 2) The transformation causes a physically push back that stops others from attacking. Ex; Nearly all transformations from Dragon Ball Z. Super Saiyan 3 Goku is most notably. 3. The opponent allows them to transform. Ex; Power Rangers
The symbolic meaning behind the wand/sword in Japanese versus American anime is particularly interesting. This difference even carries through into video games as well. It really cuts into what distinguishes American culture from Japanese.
Love this channel and happily binged a bunch of old videos cause you guys think this through and I always feel better after watching... Then Dori said "I was 15" when she watched Madoka... And I feel old now.
I scrolled down to make sure someone else made this comment already. I was starting grade 6 when Sailor Moon came out in North America, it was 100% autumn of 1995.
Yes definitely. The amount of phantom thief stories in the 90s is just staggering. Without even taking time to think about it I can rattle off Man of Many Faces Phantom Thief Jeanne Saint Tail DNAngel I'm sure there are more too, those are just the ones that instantly come to mind lol.

One from when the English version was airing and a 20th anniversary edition set. o7
I bought my sister the U.S. deck as a birthday present. It fell back into my possession after she grew up. It's still neat.
Oh love it too it's hard choose one for me lol.
That's why they say to get people gifts you'd want for yourself lol. @@@zeterzero4356
And let's not forget Miraculous Ladybug, the French take on magical girls/superheroes.
Interesting video! (CardCaptor Sakura was and will always be the best. ❤️)
There is a Italian magical girls also, Winx Club,,, and WITCH,,,
Tolvfen Yes! How could I forget 'em!
Europe likes their magical girls

I loled and was sad when the last episode of Kore wa Zonbi Desu ka said why it got canceled...
I really love how this channel goes into depth with the subject they want to talk about. I hope yall stay successful!

Q
Bro you guys need to explain why people in one piece have such big feet
Wider feet means bigger area, bigger area means more paddling power, considering how much of that world is literally just the ocean, those might be less "feet" and more "flippers"
I would say to balance the style of the characters being very tall. See Charles Schulz advising Jim Davis on drawing Garfield standing upright for the first time on his TV special: www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/starsandstories/5099241/Garfields-Fun-Fest-Jim-Davis-interview.html

One could argue it also features magical boys, since Mute/Myth also gets a transformation sequence eventually.
Winx club and lolirocks are it but Angel friends are ripping of winx club so better don't mention Angel friends
Fast forward to about 2016-17 an miraculous is released
Yeah W.i.t.c.h got canceled over a decade ago,Winx Club is going to have a season 9 soon!
Thanks for elaborating on the history of the genre of entertainment.
nintendolife25 Me too!
your narrating is so freakin perfect
Cutie Honey should get waaaaay more credit than it does. It was the first anime geared towards a male audience revolving around a female character. And despite the fanservice, honey kisaragi really holds her own in and out of battle, shes witty, fun, and easygoing and independent.
I thought she was going to mention Cat Noir as a magical boy.
Its a cartoon tho isn't it?

@@MAndSquared Yeah for example, Tokyo mew mew or Kamikaze kaito jeanne. But I think there are too many of them to mention them in one video. xD

What about Shugo Chara 😔?
Yeah I thought that too.
Shugo Chara isn't really a magical girl anime, as their transformations don't have a purpose in say, fighting or helping/saving people. Their transformations were supposed to be better versions of themselves
They kinda helped people when they x eggs
Shugo Chara we can unhapply say that just followed the tropes and didn't changed anything in the industry even being a good show, but yeah, disappointing that not even Ikuto nor Tadase were mentioned in the magical boys section
Woah I just got hit with nostalgia
I was hoping to hear about Mermaid Melody, Tokyo Mew Mew, Sugar Sugar Rune.. but instead wasted 10 minutes listening about more random stuff than sailor moon which is the reason I clicked
You thought I clicked for Sailor Moon? No! Ojamajo Doremi!
Fact: Sailor Moon's, pretty cure's, Etc, transformation sequences brought inspiration came from Tokusatsu (Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and Ultraman)
Golden Frieza has the best magical girl transformation
Lol yeah

Short answer: Why Not?
exactly
I mean it's kind of a given. I only wished that current She-Ras transformation had the golden glitter. But it surely has it's ups. But I of course loved He-Mans transformation which is of course purely magical and he yes therefore is a magical "Boy" (even inherited as such with a deep history) Love the grenre!
Other answer: Because fanservice?
@bryan diaz varela Well the new show starts the story off with a new She-Ra and she's a teen so there's room for growth.

Im glad to know I wasnt the only one who made the mistake of having Madoka Magica be their first magical girl anime...
dont get me wrong its my favorite anime lol but that 3rd episode had me shook
What about power puff girls Z?
Lmao XD YESSS

I thought we all agreed to never speak about it again
Cutie Honey started it. And that's because of Kamen Rider's popularity. So thank Go Nagai and Shotaro Ishinomori. But don't forget to love non-transforming magical girls as well. My firsts are: Super Pig, Sailor Moon, Card Captor, Majokko Megu-chan (Bia). I forgot which I watch first.
lol I already watched this vid? I have such a bad memory🤣
Wow... This was really informative! Interesting to see you discuss the economic realities of Japan influencing the animes they produced.
You guys should do one on the history of the Phantom Thief in anime. Although present in Sailor Moon and other anime, it isn't necessarily a parallel or opposite to magical girl, but it's own theme altogether. With Lupin III's granddad Arsene Lupin being the archetype.
12:34 *mouth drops open*
I don't know what to do with this.
And in general, I'm kinda triggered that you keep pointing at me!
Great video. Learned some new things.
My question is: why don't the other people attack the person transforming while they are transforming, especially people who have fought them multiple times and know they will lose if they allow said person to transform?
I think the transformations are going by super fast (like speed of light fast) so what we're seeing is a slowed down version of the transformations
@@alirose1857 Ok, I can accept that.
I wish u mentioned shugo chara especially when talking about magical boys ! Their group is a full mix of boys and girls that transform
The symbolic meaning behind the wand/sword in Japanese versus American anime is particularly interesting. This difference even carries through into video games as well. It really cuts into what distinguishes American culture from Japanese.
