Finally, somebody who actually does a tutorial on the part that Bowie plays and not just the vocal melody played overtop a bunch of chords. Thank you sir!
It's a bit scary to me how I started to practice this yesterday for no specific reason and that I today remember that Bowie passed away exactly one year ago yesterday... Do you understand..?
1. Cygnet committee 2. Rock n Roll Suicide (having been a teenager, nothing topped having David dramatically demand, "give me your hands because your wonderful") 3. Blackstar ...and 50 more. Thanks for the great tutorials!
It is appears the comments have turned into 'What is your favourite Bowie track' I wish to bring it back to the tutorial. I started this yesterday and have come further than any other piano piece I have learned. Thank you for a simple to follow, comprehensive lesson. Once I have mastered this I will be looking at more of your tutorial. Great job
Thank you for doing this, it means a lot to all of us, and especially offering your services on this song for free My favorite Bowie song is probably either Rock & Roll Suicide, Changes, or Oh! You Pretty Things; but all of them are great. Thanks again for the tutorial
Learn the chords, internalize the melody and let your creativity reinvent a beautiful version. Add some spice once you have it down. So well done and so well explained.
Ahhhh! Every time im looking for a piano tutorial I always end up with one of your video... And its amazing! I should just skip the whole 1st step and just go threw your channel one song at the time! Thanks a ton for your hard work, keep up the great work!
This is Rick, I started listining to Bowie way long time ago, I'm now 35 years of age. I must say that the whole sound track to The Labyrinth is great.
Bowie wrote the chords, Rick "embellished" it. So, yeah, all these cool flourishes and stuff are him but the chord progression and melody and lyrics are bowie. This is why the best music is done with groups, not just a single mind, we all have our strong points. Bowies contribution may seem like, oh it's just a simple descending chord prog but the jumps from part to part and the building motif into the chorus is why the song is so loved, the piano makes it shine, but the 'feel' of the song comes from bowie.
@@no_nameyouknow Not really. Bowie borrowed most of the chordal skeleton from the french song Comme d'habitud",(which became the famous 'My Way' for Frank Sinatra ). Bowie even said it was a basically a parody of the song "My Way".
fave bowie song...so many to choose from...pretty much anything on the ziggy album...but I'm gonna go with all-time fave; Heroes...so much passion. you don't hear that in songs these days.
I think for the moment "It's No Game (Part 1)" is my favorite, but, I like almost as well others songs like Five Years, Changes, and sure Life On Mars and many others. I love all the albums of David Bowie. If you lack of artist, there is Peter Hammill/Van Der Graaf Generator who is a very great one. He is musician since 1967 and still active. (For example, you could try "A House With No Door"). Have a nice day. From France
Oh my, thanks for doing the piano part!! Big credits for you for doing that. Must've been lots of work. I'm deffo gonna pay for that Btw my favourite song is strangers when we meet from 1.outside
Thats a hard question, I love the entire changes album and space oddity is an all time classic. Blackstar was also amazing in its own way but I would have to say starman is my favorite.
Thank you so much for this! I've been a Bowie fan forever, and as an adult have just started teaching myself piano. Your tutorial is incredibly well thought out and helpful, and Life on Mars is one of my favorite Bowie songs. As for my very favorite (in answer to your question); it's a toss up between Soul Love and Sweet Thing/Candidate, the latter also having a fantastic piano part which would be great to see you teach us!
I got to see Mike Garson (you probably know who he is - he did the Piano on, among other tacks, Alladin Sane, and toured with Bowie since the 70's) perform last night. I got up close so I could study his technique, since I'm teaching myself on keyboard. So far, the things I've observed about technique as I'm learning and correct me if these are wrong - try to keep your wrist so it's not bent but straight, and to get to the black keys you have to scoot up your entire hand so your finger tips are closer to the back end of the board/piano. It's ok to strike all the keys high up if you have to? Any other technique tips for a beginner? Especially a beginner with small hands?
Hi Dan. I just stumbled on this site and watched this segment. Wow! Your instruction, along with the color-coded visualizations are brilliant. I look forward to seeing how well I can apply this.
Thanks for the request! Your best bet to having a request fulfilled is to Tweet it at us! Send it to @HDpiano using the hashtag #HDrequests, then browse the hashtag to see what other users are requesting! We still hear you on TH-cam, but your BEST bet will be to Tweet it at us. :)
Been trying to learn as much Bowie as I can since his passing, and this song's been giving me a lot of trouble so I really appreciate the tutorial :) My favorite Bowie song is Starman :D
Dan, you're a legend! Well on my way to finishing this. Thankyou for unlocking a truly great song for me. First time I've really stuck at this kind of teaching rather than sheets...so thankyou for making that work too. It's a great system and this is probably me. could you you make the cde area a different colour and maybe highlight mid c. When you're glancing back and forth between own piano and hd piano at speed it would help you see exactly where you are when trying to copy you... But please don't let that take away from a great lesson.
This is an amazing video, very helpful for me since I usually can't follow these things. My favourite Bowie song is Life on Mars, but that is very closely followed by Rock and Roll With Me and As The World Falls Down
Too many favourites, a few though would be: Right / wild is the Wind and TVC 15 and this one, plus many others!! Far too many sorry could t just pick one.
Absolutely love your tutorials, some of the best on TH-cam! But just wondering, when I go to the website, it gives me an error when I try to watch any video other than this one, is this something that can be fixed by me, or is it on your end?
I’m confused. The names you give to some of the chords appear incorrect - what you call Am/E is Am/C - and a lot of them don’t match the sheet music you link to. Huh?

Du er flink til å lære bort - griper fatt i det essensielle man ikke får noe av med mindre man studerer musikkteori.
Finally, somebody who actually does a tutorial on the part that Bowie plays and not just the vocal melody played overtop a bunch of chords. Thank you sir!
It wad Rick Wakeman who played this on Hunky Dory, most live performances by Mike Garson never by Bowie himself.
Ikr
Bowie didn’t play piano on this track it was Rick Wakeman
Bowie was absolutely NOT ABLE to play something so complicated, this is Rick Wakeman the legendary keyboardist of Yes.
space oddity was the first song I ever heard by Bowie and will always be my favorite, rest in peace you absolute legend
RIP indeed.
I really like Heroes, I love when he yells the lyrics, it makes the emotion and personality in the song project much more
🤘🎹
This is my favourite David Bowie song. So moving and emotional. Thanks for the tribute!
And a great one at that. You're very welcome!
It's a bit scary to me how I started to practice this yesterday for no specific reason
