You know, I was one of those who boarded the hatetrain when the game came out to such a critical reception but when I started playing it, in spite of my skepticism, the game won me over with its characters, story, open world and combat. I mean, sure it had its flaws in terms of facial animations, but if you're willing to look beyond that, you will find an immersive and wonderful game in it.

Totally had the same experience. I was massively sceptical when I started playing after all the videos I'd seen of the dreadful animations. But I tried to keep an open mind and I started enjoying the game more the more I played. Finished it a few days ago and really liked it.
Now I'm really hoping they make a sequel, which I feel is totally necessary with all the unanswered questions. And, well, I just really want one :D

Agreed. I think the game is fantastic. Is the story perfect? No absolutely not. Was the original trilogy story perfect? Heck no. I haven't beaten the game, but the characters and environments won me over quickly. I think it's a ton of fun.

Never played a mass effect, but the faces looked hilarious and drew me toward trying it out.
I rented it on redbox, and after reaching the first world, I knew I was done.
Just got home after paying full price. No regret whatsoever.

If you compare this to The Witcher 3 or other recent RPGs like Deus Ex Mankind Divided, or even Bioware's own Dragon Age Origins, you'll feel that it's a sub-par experience. The truth is that The Witcher 3 (especially with the 2 giant DLCs) really raised the bar with regards to RPGs, and gamers now expect nothing less from Bioware.
The combat and world environment is a big step up, but it doesn't mask the fact that the game felt like it's going backwards for the ME franchise. The UI is super clunky, the 2 starting companions (Cora and Liam) have the personality of wet cardboard, the companion combat mechanics were simplified to the point of irrelevance, the paragon/renegade system was removed which made the conversations and moral choices less interesting, the writing was terribly generic and tone-deaf in places, the voice acting is like dead fish, and the obvious "my face is tired" animations and bugs, even with the patch. The Nomad was kinda nice, but you soon start to wish that you had a dropship like everyone else, and the game feels like a grindfest at times, just like Dragon Age Inquisition.
Finally the biggest problem for me is that Andromeda just doesn't feel 'fresh' enough, for a game that's all about exploration. It's the same old races, the same ships (Tempest = Normandy, Nexus = Citadel) and the same companions. the Angara wasn't terribly interesting and the Kett is just a bunch of retextured Collectors. If I go to Andromeda I would expect some truly bizarre stuff like giant sentient mushrooms, a flying insect companion from a giant nest city in the air, and spaceships made from the scourge.

I liked the game too. It wasn't a great MASS EFFECT game, but it was a good enough stand-alone title for me. You know, if you were able to see past the bugs, glitches, incomplete writing, at times dull facial animations, and an absolutely underwhelming main villain (A lot of which could have been salvaged with a decent DLC or two). Bioware didn't decide squat... EA didn't deem it profitable enough and scratched the project, especially since at that point they placed their attention on Anthem, which indeed was a dumpster fire.

Good song. I'm midway through the game and completely get why some people are disappointed. Although the ME trilogy had its flaws it was very ambitious and well made. This new game as a stand-alone is actually an above average game once they fixed some of the bugs; however, it is still somewhat of a letdown when you compare it to the tour-de-force that was ME1-3. It is a hard act to follow, but I can only hope Bioware listens to the constructive feedback from fans (not the hate). Better quality exploration quests , better dialog, less emails and quest log clutter, don't outsource facial animations, and please dear God bring back the power wheel!

  • @John_II
    @John_II 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Loved this score. I will actually say it's my favorite Mass Effect game. Second favorite is ME 2 (in case anyone wants to know).
Why? Well, because I played it 1.5 years after release when everything was fixed/patched, so I could focus on the game and story. Sure the story is a bit generic, but it's exploring a brand new Galaxy, the next Frontier. It took the exploration of ME1 and made it better, it had ME3's wicked multiplayer. It had ME1's character customizations and you can reset your subclass whenever you want. It had some linearity, but for the most part could be tackled however you wanted like ME2 and it has the character missions like ME2.
It lacked a bit of polish and was a bit long at 80 hours to do most of the side quests and main story, but frankly I loved the experience. I wish I had found out about gear crafting earlier in the game because that laser beam gun is off the chain. :)
Well, I'm going to replay this game. :)

I just bought this game in pre-order one year ago and I started it in August because I travel a lot for work. By the way, I finished it some days ago and I am very sad because probably we'll not see any DLC or MEA2.... Why? Because of the haters that starts to throw shit on Bioware and EA just for facial animations or other shitty things.... Now reading the comments here I see that a lot of haters change their minds just because they play the whole game and enjoyed it. If and only if you played before judge maybe we could have a sequel.....

Solaxe S shitty story? Ok you haven't played it... Countless bugs? Maybe in the first version (in this they made a huge mistake). Bland character? Drack for example is the best krogan ever made... The problem here is that everybody compare the whole old trilogy with this single episode.... Comparing to the first mass effect, this one has nothing worse. If you have finish it you can say that you don't like it but say that there is a shitty story is unfair.

ME:A was not the best attempt at a new chapter to the ME series. But it was not as bad as people mentioned it was. Perhaps, because I got lucky, I encountered very few visual bugs or graphical errors that many others complained about. Of course, a lot of the poor quality can be blamed on EA for perhaps rushing the team and not giving them more time to make a polished launch experience.
But, the story, the characters, the crew, the ship; I enjoyed it... more than ME1-3. Don't get me wrong, there are characters that stand the test of time (Garrus) in the original ME, but the Ryder crew - overall and together - felt stronger, it felt like family.
I hope ME:A gets a trilogy like its predecessor. And I hope like ME1-3 it stands the test of time (not for a terrible ending to its trilogy) but for an epic experience that anyone can enjoy.

Alright, here comes my opinion about this wich I am shoving down your throat, ready or not. Sorry about the wall of text that, knowing me, is likely to happen now: Here we go.
Bugs? there weren't many major ones for me either but when I was searching for the strange rock on Voeld, that is supposed to attract wildlife and make it mad, finding the rock didn't trigger anything. I literaly stood ontop of it and nothing happened. took me 20 minutes to realize I wasn't doing it wrong but the game had it wrong. Reloading fixed to problem. And when it comes to minor ones I think we have all witnessed units spawning 5 feet in the air and then dropping to the ground right in front of us, bad AI pathing and glitchy animations. I had plenty of those and I think I got stuck in the jetpackdash animation a couple of times wich was mostly funny and didn't really do any harm. Apart from emersionbraking I guess.
Bland Story? I think that is very subjective, it really depends on what you have read, watched and played before. Andromeda draws it's inspiration from somewhere I am sure, but being practically illiterate in sci-fi stuff (not watched a single episode of star trek, havent read dune, never seen battlestar galactica, know the starwars movies but I would look at them as sci-fantasy much more than hardboiled sci-fi. ) I found a lot of it new and exciting. Matt Colville, a writer I adore often sais that to him Fantasy is the genre for a character study and sci-fi tries to be a commentary on society. In that reguard I found myself confronted with much broader questions than those usually raised in the stuff I read. It is less about the "what is best for me and my friends" and more about the "what does it mean to be human". Naturally I had thought of this stuff before on my own and I also played mass effect 2 and ragequit 3 because I felt it was a betrayal that half my favorite charakters were sidelined, but still stuff like the question what it means to be alive in reguards to AI have an effect on me that I think is best described by "philosophical masturbation". I would think those would look like cheapshots to someone more well read than me though, because I am sure that gets asked all the time. Never watched space odyssey but from what I hear people talk about that was a thing there right? Anyways I did wanna bring up one lazy writing point that just baffled me and took me right out of it. At some point it is said that the Archs they sent to andromeda were unarmed. what? You sent millions of people on a trip to a place that might have completely changed from what youve seen when you took off by the time you get there and you didn't arm the ships? Like for real? I understand coming in on a military vessel sends a wierd message, but surely that can be explained by "we went on a trip for several centuries and we didn't know what to expect" People would understand right? RIGHT? I mean come on... You can have the intention, and I would argue you should have, to never use those weapons, but please bring them anyways. It is like riding a motorbike without a helmet. Yes you don't intent to crash but when you do you will be happy to have one. Anyways those are just my thoughts feel free to disagree.
Charakters: Again super subjective but here are my thoughts. I am a D&D DM and as someone who often has to make up charakters and knows that he isn't very good at subtelty I whole heartedly enjoyed some of the more quirky crew on the Tempest. Loved Peebee, Vetra, Jaal and Drack. Incidently also all non humans wich is where I believe to me the novelty of the races does play a role. The humans however I did find kinda meh. Liam was to me insuffrably generic, as were cora and Gil. Suvee is an exception I guess. What I will say is that apart from me unashamedly loving some of the charakters (or in some cases loving to hate them) I noticed that they are somewhat one-dimensional. They all have one central issue they evolve around and if you spend time with them, that issue and flaw is something they have to overcome and eventually, through your help learn to deal with. That is very paint by numbers, although I would argue much less egregiously so than in something like skyrim. BioWare clearly has good writers that know how to make a charakter stand out from the rest of the cast and I think the voiceactors did a great job. It is just that compared to Mass effect two, wich to me is BioWares best writing the charakters all seem to have a little less interesting conflicts and more generic motivations & flaws than what the studio is capable of in their highest moments. Jack to me is still the pinacle of their charakterbased storytelling.
Rushed MMO quests: All over the place. Like how many collect 25x missions are there? Scan all minerals, Scan all the Animals, scan all the Factions, Collect all the memory triggers, find enough mineral nodes to upgrade weapons the list goes on. Witcher 3 shows how to do openworld right, this was doing it.... Somewhat right but also somewhat wrong. I believe that going open world served the theme of the game, wich is exploration, very well. As opposed to previous mass effect incarnations, where we go around a mostly explored galaxy and deal with it's problems, Andromeda has us discover a new one. Naturaly, dumping us in a map and having us search for the interesting bits is looking to be a great choice. If, that is, you are willing to put in the effort. I think andromeda clearly shows all the signs of the devs trying to put in the work but EA cutting corners. On the one hand we have absolute gems of questing where you follow a random SOS signal somewhere out there, just to find two stoned assholes that did it for fun, leading to you uncovering a drug operation on one of the planets. That is how it should be done. Yes you can argue that the MMO style quests are a blight and werent worth making the game open world but I disagree. I proudly didn't pay any attention to them because I believe them to be a result of an EA mandated release date that ultimately made the game fall short of it's potential. Didn't let that bog down my experience, I instead went in the nomad that I always loaded the nomad full of crewmembers I liked to listen to (my highlight was when drack and Peebee talk about their outfits, no spoilers) and just went on a seach for a while. There are a lot of really awesome quests hidden in the world that put a giant - idiotlike smile on my face when I found them. It is true though that the somewhat formulaic mainplot, whenever it shows up has you go through an unwelcomed cycle of repetition with somewhat uniform goals. Everytime it is the same stuff to open the vault and largely the same thing you discover in there. You then deal with the vault for a while and then you can get back to having fun by solving a murder mistery or whatever.
All in all I had a great time with the game (also because I picked it up reduced and played after the patch that fixed the admittedly horrible look of some of the charakters.) but I recognize why so many people are disappointed. I think having my expectation lowered by both mass effect 3 and the post release coverage the game got served me well and got me in the right mindest. Expecting nothing and beeing suprised by the competence the game does have. Not my favorite mass effect, but one I liked definitely not the best mass effect and I can even see why people call it the worst, but I liked it a lot better than 3 and I haven't played 1.
I will however say, if the game was as good as the menu theme it would have been the best friggin space opera ever made.

Loved this soundtrack, and actually loved this game; the theme perfectly sets the tone, and while the game has its (many) faults it does a good job of capturing something that Mass Effect games have tried and failed to do, which is give a real sense of wonder and discovery from being an explorer. It also has easily the best gameplay of the series, ignoring the open world syndrome (too many meaningless filler side quests that you have to learn to ignore).
It bums me out that they never got to make any DLC or the planned sequel(s), because as rocky as the game's development and release were, I feel like the foundation was there behind it all, and it wasn't actually a commercial failure.

Andromeda was fantastic. It was more than just the some of its parts. It knew what it could be, where it could go, where it wanted to go, far beyond any place touched by man. Far beyond the known universe, with a story untold it suffered under the weight of its predecessors. It didn't need a neatly wrapped ending, it need a portent into a new unknown, with afar greater payoff. However EA does what it does and is it's own mind killer.. Instead of a new Shepard, Mass Effect needed a Paul Atreides. It needed the possibility of a new Lisan al Gaib, a what if. No sandworms or spice. It needed a valiant Victor Atreides, it need House Vernius of IX. A poignant war between man v transhumanism was the next step. A new Butlerian Jihad. A holy war for the human soul. #Dune

This song makes me sad this night. I imagine playing Unreal Tournament with a lost friend, just the both of us and everything was there. We had our world and everything was settled, of course deficits but those topics made our nights or perhaps our bond. We lived in the same room and shared our lives and time until we got seperated due to things I can't remember. I miss her - this universe gave me being seen and listened, and the practice of providing the same for another human being. It was heaven, in a way.
And now I will sleep, with my memories of the dead so close to me I don't mind that my body lives in another timeline, for my heart doesn't.

It's funny to me how the Milky Way species just comes and shits on everyone, Shepard was even more badass than Ryder, it makes me wonder if there's a galaxy out there who could and wants to dominate the Milky Way, worse than the reapers, I think that's a good plot direction

Andomeda - lame leftist scum shit. Any preAndromeda Mass Effect was not so bad like this, they was a games with a some high-stakes ideas and terror mixed on vision of why the friendship, professional courage and dignity is so needed in hard times of war, where even u are gay or transgender - its not a part of main plot ever, you must do your job or u and your mates will die in pain because of you. In Andromeda u never feel that there a real risk or no feels of immersiveness, no real life that was in Mass Effect. It never was like Witcher 3 also, but not so unrealistic and comically stupid like Andromeda. RIP one of the best serial game that i played, may this track be your soil.

This is the theme song of disappointment.
I played Mass Effect 2 and 3 start to finish probably 10 times each because I loved them so much
I didnt like 1, but even finished that 2 or 3 times.
Andromeda I was sick of after playing it for little more than 4 days. it wasn't memorable or captivating, it was traumatic, if anything, how a series could turn into such poorly written shit. Traumatic that what seemed like a great new trilogy may never be now after this disaster, I really wanted to like Andromeda, and I fanboyed over some of the characters, none of them were anything what I expected, and that's a foundation problem. Mass effect was memorable for it's characters, they drove the story,
what we got instead was a bland cast that had promise but there was very little beneath the surface.
Let me be clear, I didnt care about the animations or glitches, the game was bad enough before that issue

just like the first one, i think the second one is gonna be good again, if they trim all the stuff we didnt like in ME1 and is in andromeda again, and give us like a suicide mission type story, it s gonna be really good

    • @phantomh4nd966
      @phantomh4nd966 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

why the fuck do you need a suicide mission /world ending type story every goddamn time?Cant it just be abt exploration ..unravelling mysteries of a new galaxy with less stakes?Which is what ME:Andromeda's story has done perfectly.Combat and exploration were far better than orginal trilogy,Story wise it sets up a much bigger universe than old trilogy did ..so wait for the next games.God i dont know what people like abt the orginal ME trilogy ..its definetely not the just suicide mission gameplay alone, its the STORY >>THE LORE which made it unique from other sci fi games,Andromeda had a way better start in that aspect that ME1 did.Only hate FOR MEA was ..it had a small team & rushed up development cycles becoz of EA's greed for money/Anthem.
@kastrenzo as you said in your words you take atleast 2 games to like characters, from ME1 to ME2 ,how is your hate even valid?traumatic really?Any single game cant setup all characters to an extent which you like(which is based on three games) MEA characters will have more story as they progress in future games.MEA I had better experience than ME1 as this is what i was looking for..less world ending /suicide type missions and more of exploration ,mystery ,meeting new advanced alien species like kett, jardaan, angara along with our galaxy species.. by setting a bigger universe than that of Milkyway. Not to over state ,i was blown away by combat ..jetpacks,alien weapons Nomad, different space suits customizations.Looking for a new home in an unknown galaxy storyline is much better/interesting way to go after 3 games of REAPERS ARE COMING!

2OldGamers I don't think that the planets we were given to explore are well designed and frankly feel dull. Also, things just happen without me seeing or hearing it. Maybe I'm playing the game wrong but I keep ending up in firefights and I don't know why. I presume certain conditions make the game skip the animations and/or the dialog.

***** I wouldn't buy the game after all the bad reviews if I did. Criticism isn't always a bad thing though. As far as I'm aware, Bioware are already working on a plan to fix most of the issues. It would not happen if we just accepted their final product which, let's be honest, is few months from being finished.
