Since the very first The Sims, I’ve used graph paper to pre-plan my builds. In 20+ years, I have filled three graph pads, and started my fourth as of 2023. It’s fun to go back and look at forgotten, or favourite, builds.
oh man, im wishing i did this back during sims 3 when you couldnt adjust the foundation after you put the room down. so many hours wasted writing down room sizes before bulldozing the whole build and re-placing everything WITH foundations.
Your "builder's bible" series made such a big difference when I was just learning. And my daughter, who is 10, says "build a box, then make it fancy" all the time!
You can translate a floorplan by dividing the size of the room by 2.5 and rounding the result. That does a fairly good job of translating real-life room sizes to sims tiles.
Another thing I found helpful for scaling is to look at what you are referencing and find either a window or a door that exists in the game that is similar to what you are trying to copy on the house. Use that as a scale reference and "count" the spacing using the window or door. I usually opt for a window. You can generally guess the size of a room based on how many "windows" fit on a wall. This works great for smaller houses, but its more complicated for larger houses because in real life windows can be all sorts of sizes and in the sims, most windows are 1 or 2 tiles (sometimes 3) so the scaling gets weirder with larger houses. But its still helpful if you want to make things as close to the picture as possible imo
It would be really cool if maybe you made this like a mini series and showed how to build different style houses. Like maybe a big Victorian house and that can also be a way to show how to use rounded/hexagonal walls since a lot of them have a spire in the front. A good guide to converting IRL floor plans to TS4 (or any Sims game honestly) is to divide the measurements by 3. Tiles in the Sims are approximately 1 meter square, so that's a good rule to follow. I almost exclusively convert IRL floorplans so I'm very comfortable with the concepts. You can find some of my work on the gallery under the same username as here.
Another good tip is starting by building the obvious rooms like the 2x3 bathrooms. When you have those as reference, building the rooms around them becomes easier when calculations are wonky.
As someone who always uses floorplans too my personal tips is to use the beds. I check how many times a bed would fit in a bedroom and/or amount of space around it and base the rest of the house around the size of said bedroom. But I have done this so often nowadays I usually tweak it to my needs, a tile bigger or smaller depending on what I want to put in the room and then adjust the rest so it doesnt look out of place.
I really needed this video. I have a learning disability and have a hard time trying to figure out houses in the game. This step by step tutorial really helped me and didn’t give me anxiety like I usually get trying to build a house! Thanks Kayla! 😊
This was super helpful, particularly in the spots where you added character to the home by adding bump ins inside and bump outs outside, as well as the roof and corner trim additions. That is where I tend to struggle the most - my builds lack character and look a bit boxy/plain.
Today I started making a retirement home and I impressed myself cos I just randomly put down rooms and it looks kinda halfway decent!! I knew I wanted a courtyard or some garden space and then of course the kitchen, community room for coffee and board games, and a lobby.
In all my years playing the game I have never built a house in Sims 4 that wasn't just a rectangle with rooms and a roof. My husband recently got into the game after watching me play it and while I was able to answer most of his questions regarding the game, I was lost when it came to building. We watched this video together, and I have to thank you for all of your tips and demonstrations. I especially appreciate the tip about looking up houses online and finding the floor plan. This past weekend, I found a house floor plan that I really liked and put your advice to use! While it is not an exact replica of the floor plan I found, the build I made is very much inspired by it. As I said before, my builds before this were kind of like a bento box in house form. But this one...I am really proud of it! It's not anything extravagant, but it is unique and looks like something that I would want to live in myself if I could afford it! Now, I just need to practice making two story houses.
So helpful! Roofing is enemy#1 😂. I would love to see you do a Tudor and Victorian style basics next. Sometimes the hard part is getting things to translate into the sims.
OMG, I loved this!! I really struggle with a general shape and floor plan when I'm building (roofs and landscaping are a nightmare, honestly) so this was super useful and fun. I would love if you do some more “Build with me” type of videos….maybe one “Build with me” live someday? It would be super cool!! Thank you
Kayla you haven’t built a blue suburban in months. You’ve lost yourself. Please build another blue suburban. I miss it. I see blue suburbans in my dreams.
I often find myself really good at building rooms but NOT houses, I struggle to connect them in a way I want while also making the shape of the house I want
Absolutely LOVED this. I always have issues with roof placement. The way you did this like a build together was perfect. The pace and how you showed us how to follow the floor plan was very helpful. You definitely have to do more of these. I followed along and made the house with my own touches. I'll be uploading as soon as I decorate the inside. Thanks!
Ive been playing the sims for 24 years. Im not a builder, im a CAS + gameplay simmer. You've taught me sooo much when it comes to building and Ioften refer to your videos when I get frustrated. Thank you for teaching this old dog (almost 36) new tricks.
You are one of the reasons I properly started building in the Sims 4. Even though you didn't do any real tutorials, you still inspired me to build. Also Console Sims4 (Xbox specifically) doesn't have some build abilities (shift clicking to move one part of the eaves is one thing that seems to not possible with controllers) unless you whip out a keyboard and mouse. I would know, that's what I play on. With keyboard & mouse it works almost identical to PC.
This was hands down one of my top 3 favorite videos. Incredibly helpful. So easy to follow it makes the building process feel SO manageable. And the amount of ideas you gave makes it easy to practice the same shell multiple times so you don’t have to think of something original every single time!! And you’re very an encouraging and thoughtful teacher. Like I can not say enough good things about this. Thank you!! Please make more! You are the reason I have manage to overcome the overwhelm of building and grown as a player ❤
Big yes to this type of video series!! Maybe go through the different worlds and show us how to build different styles using only base game and that particular pack 🙏🏻
For anyone on console who wants to use cheats or size up or down. Press then release all four shoulder buttons at the same time to open the cheats bar. For sizing up and/or down; press down all four shoulder buttons and hold them, then press the up and down arrows for rising and lowering items. Same thing for sizing up and down things, but this time you use the left and right buttons. The left makes things smaller, and right makes things larger. USE THE INSTRUCTIONS TO HELP YOU!!
it’s so nice that kayla took the time to go step by step and slowly show her building process. i haven’t been playing the sims that much lately but i bet this is gonna be helpful to lots of people!
Thanks so much for all your ideas and showing some "how to's" - I have not played or built in Sims for quite a long time and a friend wanted for each of us to make a build (Castle inspired) and then share it with one another. She'd been an avid playing as long as I have NOT, so she was so quick! Your video gave me some layout ideas and I added a second floor. In the end, I have been building a "renovated castle". And no, I am not done, but I have made a lot of progress since I started watching your video. I will probably check out your landscaping ideas when I finish furnishing the indoors.
Another tip I use is to create more formal flower borders place a semi circle rug, place various size rocks around the edge, delete the rug then add plants and flowers.
not gonna lie, like a year ago i was able to get into sims 4 for the first time because you shared your common build shortcuts in a few videos. Going in blind with NO shortcut knowledge is hell.
Before I started watching your videos a few months ago, I did NOT know how to build AT ALL but one day I decided to try and copy one of your builds. It did not look like whatever house you had built in that video but after that I was able to start building nice homes.
I just wanted to say that I'd loved seeing someone post a tutorial on how to build on the sims when I was a beginner. I think the video was really useful for those who want to experiment a bit more and build. I'd like to see more of this type of content, especially because I've always enjoyed your building and furnishing style.
This was so helpful! I would have never thought to use the wall prices as a measuring tool/build-along guide, but that's so smart OMG. I'd love a build-along series, especially if they're themed? Like, how to build a farm house/horse farm, how to build a cottage, how to build a residential rental/apartment complex/duplex etc. etc.! Builds that have different requirements/functionalities within packs kinda thing!
I like that this tutorial is a little more complicated than ones Kayla has done in the past. A lot of us have been following her or playing for a while so it was nice to see something a teensy step up from super basic
I have been playing sims for like two years now almost religiously and I get into funks with building so these tutorials are a great for everyone! Love your building style, and I would love to see like an interior decoration tutorial or something!!
Okay I like to think of myself as a "builder" in all types of games but I absolutely EAT UP these types of tutorial videos. What I'm trying to say is this content isn't just appreciated by newbies, but advanced players too. You're the GOAT, simsie!
I have been struggling to build a decent house since I started playing the sims 3. Sims 2 I usually just built what I needed, Sims 4 was just daunting, but this really helped and I can honestly say it had inspired me to try it for myself, thank you for taking the time to upload this and walking us through behind the thought process as well as encouraging us to be more creative. This really helped me a lot. I suck at building xD
I APPRECIATE THIS VIDEO !! I struggled with roofing SO MUCH. It always seemed to look so awkward to me, so thank you for this video! I'd love to eventually see a video on the terrain tools as well :)
I love the small little hallway cutouts you added. I never think to add those and always think walls need to be so uniform, but those tiny hallways ccreate such a unique vibe. :)
Would you be able to do more specific house style tutorials? Like Craftsman houses? How do you make it look like a realistic craftsman. Or victorian? Like what are the key components that give the house the right look? That kinda thing.
You can use a half Gable for a driveway! In case you want a foundation you can use a concrete roof swatch and then mix that with terrain paint of flooring to make a sloped driveway :)
As someone who has always been too intimated to build in the Sims 4, I LOVE this tutorial!! I had to pause a lot and rewind to follow along but I'd love to see more videos like this :)
Hey lilsimsie, I would love to see you make a house with the Get Famous Expansion pack. I love the furniture, fences, stairs etc. but I just cannot build with it.. It always ends up looking weird :(
I have always downloaded houses from the gallery. I was originally a TS1 and TS2 player, I haven’t had much experience with TS4 at all really. Just a few months. I love your channel and I love this video in particular because I am absolutely useless at building, and really want to learn, and I’ve decided you are going to be my teacher - whether you want to be or not, lol 😂 I am just firing up my game and am excited to try this build. You made it look simple, but I bet it takes me hours upon hours, lol. Thank you for all the time you spend trying to help folk like myself, who are visual learners! Much appreciated. Happy New Year to you and yours 💙 Watch this space, lol 😂
As always, one of the best things about Kayla's content is how much thought she puts into it being accessible for as many people as possible. She always tries to include people of all demographics no matter what kind of content she's making and it really comes across as earnest and genuine and makes me love the channel so much. 💖💖💖
This legitimately really helped me out…I’m very interested in building and love the idea of making houses perfectly personalized for my sims I’ve just had a really hard time building… But after watching this and going along with you it really helped me out and made me feel so accomplished (like yeah I kinda built that!) and it makes me super excited to work on other builds for my sims‼️‼️‼️ Wooo! 🥳
Sometimes I feel weird about it for some reason but I follow along with you all the time! I am ashamed to admit it usually lol but most of my saved builds start off as me copying your floor plans 😩 😂 you’ve helped me learn so much over the years, now I’m just trying to build out of my own head and not take 2 weeks to do so 🥴
You adding how much the walls cost really helped with following along. Sometimes the angles cover up a square or 2 and then the whole building is off so thank you for adding that
Thank you Kayla. I watched this and built at the same time, following your instructions for the structure of the house and although I'm nowhere near as good as you, I didn't do too bad. I'll let you see it once I've done the terrain paint and stuff. This was easy to follow, thank you. Since I built step by step, it took more than a day to get through the video but I wanted to build as I watched so I could go along. I like kind of hands on stuff because I'm more likely to remember it. lol. Been a very long time since I've built anything but now I know different things to do. I'd love more stuff like this.
I recently downloaded sims and since then I have been watching your videos non-stop!! So this video came at a perfect timing for me since I have been wanting to build my own houses, THANK YOU!
for anyone who wants to make fake garages but still use a foundation, i always use a half gabled roof piece and just lower it so it aligns w the foundation, then i use the concrete roof paint. + also i extend it into ground and use terrain paint so it looks a bit smoother. hope this helps :)
Thank you soo, soo much for this pretty build 😊❤ I love it, I'd like to turn it into an 8 sims starter, but I guess it's a little too pricy 😅 I saw, that it costs more than 30k and it's empty. But I'll try my best to put a few necessary things and delete a little decorative objects (especially in the garden). So maybe I can move in with my 4 Generation 8 sim family who are the greatgranny, the grandparents with their 3 daughters (young adult & 2 teens) and the baby and the infant of the oldest daughter. 😊
In Sims 4, I built some nice 1 or 2 bedroom homes. Was based on the fact, families are having less children. Also, some of the homes were culture based. Would be interesting to see the homes I designed in reality.
my houses always end up looking like prisons cause i'm so obsessed with order that my houses end up as just huge blocks. I need to learn to appreciate the fancy bump-outs lol
I found this so helpful and hope you do more of them! I find starting builds from scratch overwhelming and figuring out the roof is a nightmare. My house turned out so beautiful!
I absolutely loved this! I struggle a lot with exteriors - roofing and landscaping, namely, and making my houses not be squares. I built along with part of it, but watched most of it without building along - trying to build along got overwhelming for me lol. But I appreciated all the tips and tricks! I'm going to have to use real-life houses and floorplans more...
I just have to say...I really love you! You are not only a great simmer and YT vlogger, but you are just an allround good person. Just had to type this in this moment in time. Keep doing what you are doing and I'll keep watching.
This was SO helpful. Your streams and other videos have been helpful, too. But this long format "tutorial" is awesome. I feel a lot more confident going forward so thank you!
I love tutorials like this. Even though I’m pretty good at building now, I didn’t used to be. But I’ve learned watching lilsimsie and James Turner mostly. But sometimes I need the roof tips and stuff! 😊
hey as a brand new builder, I think it would be nice if you let us know even little things that might be second-nature to you but not to us, such as how you're adding lights as you go and how to change the wall appearance settings as you're going. I kept having to pause and google to figure things out, like why my rooms were so dark. I didn't notice until halfway through the video that you were adding lights on the ceiling as you went.
I Love the idea of a sims 4 build-along series, Kayla can be our Bob Ross

This genuinely helped me (: And I only have the base game, get to work and cats and dogs so I would love to see builds using those packs❤️
USE THE INSTRUCTIONS TO HELP YOU!!
it’s so nice that kayla took the time to go step by step and slowly show her building process. i haven’t been playing the sims that much lately but i bet this is gonna be helpful to lots of people!
hands down the best person at build how-tos - learned all my skills from her
You can add a chimney too, to break up roofs. It's less fiddly than separate roof pieces
Love the build alongs! I also LOVE having an empty shell to download and then furnish for our individual sims.
I would love another tutorial video for furnishing a house - I really struggle with color schemes and knowing what looks best together
This was so helpful I feel so much more confident about roofs now
honestly, you're the reason I really started trying to build more often, Kayla
Another tip I use is to create more formal flower borders place a semi circle rug, place various size rocks around the edge, delete the rug then add plants and flowers.
Omgoodness thank you!! I could not for the life of me figure out how to raise the house! 😂😂 I love your content ❤❤❤
This was genuinely really fun to build along with you. I would love more videos like this!!
not gonna lie, like a year ago i was able to get into sims 4 for the first time because you shared your common build shortcuts in a few videos. Going in blind with NO shortcut knowledge is hell.
Before I started watching your videos a few months ago, I did NOT know how to build AT ALL but one day I decided to try and copy one of your builds. It did not look like whatever house you had built in that video but after that I was able to start building nice homes.
No, you're not decent, you're amazing at building like I wish I could build houses like you do
I just wanted to say that I'd loved seeing someone post a tutorial on how to build on the sims when I was a beginner.
Thanks so much for this! I've been playing for nearly 24 yrs & still screw up the roofs. Very helpful!!!
As someones whos guilty of huge builds i need humbling. Im not sure if its because of growing up poor.but i like to give them everything
I’ve been building for a long time but I appreciate videos like these so much because I don’t see many of them and Kayla is a great teacher imo.
I had so much fun building along with you today! Love these videos - thank you!!
You can use a half Gable for a driveway! In case you want a foundation you can use a concrete roof swatch and then mix that with terrain paint of flooring to make a sloped driveway :)
YES to more tutorial builds!!!!! I've learned a bit from just watching your vids and streams... but specific videos like this helps a ton!
As someone who has always been too intimated to build in the Sims 4, I LOVE this tutorial!! I had to pause a lot and rewind to follow along but I'd love to see more videos like this :)
Hey lilsimsie,
I would love to see you make a house with the Get Famous Expansion pack.
This was awesome. Roofing is probably where I struggle the most when making my houses. So these little tips and showing how they're done was perfect!
As always, one of the best things about Kayla's content is how much thought she puts into it being accessible for as many people as possible. She always tries to include people of all demographics no matter what kind of content she's making and it really comes across as earnest and genuine and makes me love the channel so much. 💖💖💖
I loved building alongside you it was so helpful!!
This legitimately really helped me out…I’m very interested in building and love
the idea of making houses perfectly personalized for my sims I’ve just had a really hard time building…
But after watching this and going along with you it really helped me out and made me feel so accomplished (like yeah I kinda built that!) and it makes me super excited to work on other builds for my sims‼️‼️‼️ Wooo! 🥳
Been building a long time, but learned a lot from the explanation of the thought process. Especially liked the landscaping tips!
Were the promised links to earlier build tutorials removed? Or is this a Gruen manoeuvre? Thanks for the video.
+ also i extend it into ground and use terrain paint so it looks a bit smoother. hope this helps :)
been loving the longer videos recently!! we get a lot more of your process which is helpful!
Thank you soo, soo much for this pretty build 😊❤
I love it, I'd like to turn it into an 8 sims starter, but I guess it's a little too pricy 😅
I saw, that it costs more than 30k and it's empty.
Kayla: "I'm not an expert builder or anything" -- Humble Mother is mothering
In Sims 4, I built some nice 1 or 2 bedroom homes. Was based on the fact, families are having less children. Also, some of the homes were culture based. Would be interesting to see the homes I designed in reality.
my houses always end up looking like prisons cause i'm so obsessed with order that my houses end up as just huge blocks. I need to learn to appreciate the fancy bump-outs lol
I found this so helpful and hope you do more of them! I find starting builds from scratch overwhelming and figuring out the roof is a nightmare. My house turned out so beautiful!
Please continue this series!! Either we fill newcrest together or a build with each pack so we can join in when we can would be amazing!
20:25 sis really chatting like we know how to do these already🤣😭im literally learning from you and im failing to keep up
Lilsimsie, the Bob Ross of building in the Sims. Thank you for this Video 😍
I love this tutorial style video! I always have problems with the floor plan when I build a house so this was super helpful!!
This is such a great idea!! You should totally do more of these
I absolutely loved this!
I started building as you explained in your tutorials years ago and it's still the best method for me. Thanks to you building became really fun
I love it when she post tutorials on how to build houses they are so much fun❤❤
HELP ME-- I LOST IT WHEN SHE STARTED USING THE SIMOLEON COUNT AS A MEASUREMENT INSTEAD OF TILES
I am a master at rebuilding existing sim houses, but I mostly suck at making my own from clean plot
