  • This film still is taking the very special place in my heart. Excellent dance on the masterly level and amazing Baryshnikov, it's a plenty of artistic impressions. I'm coming back to this film with a great pleasure.

    Directed by Taylor Hackford
    Starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines, Geraldine Page, Helen Mirren, Jerzy Skolimowski, Isabella Rosselini

  • @user-tz6tw3ss3y

    IMHO this is the most amazing interpretation of this ballet... it gives you the creeps, as if you're not just watching a ballet or a dance, but living there, living everything that this young man is experiencing... Mikhail is not only an absolute phenomenon of dance, but also an Artist with a capital letter...
    for the purity of the experiment, I looked at other performances of this ballet, I remember the performance of Nureyev and Le Riche, but they also do not have such a presence in the role as Misha, the others are not about anything at all... I really hope that somewhere there is still a full version of this ballet performed by Baryshnikov

    • @MMMa3
      @MMMa3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well said. Misha is mainly focused on portraying emotions where others seem to concentrate more on performing the choreo perfectly. Misha does that, as usual, like he doesn't even have to think about it.

    The opening ballet sequence, Le Jeune Homme et La Mort, originally choreographed by Roland Petit in 1946 and performed anew by Baryshnikov and Florence Faure, was filmed at the Bristol Hippodrome.It tells the story of a young man hopelessly in love and driven to suicide by his a cruel and faithless mistress . Florence Faure, born in 1959 in Alger, is a Swiss dancer, classical dance teacher and creator of Atelier.le.loft. She began her career in Marseille in 1979 at the Ballet national de Marseille directed by Roland Petit.

    This is just fantastic. Really brings me back to the 80's. For those who don't know, the music is the orchestra instrumental of Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor by Michel Colombier, I believe. Also, the maiden of death ballarina is
    Florence Faure. The ballet is "Le Jeune Homme et la Mort" by Roland Petit.

    The music is just as mind blowing as the dancing. FYI: Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor BWV 582. A Passacaglia is basically a theme and variations - this one is the Mount Everest of Passacaglias! The underlying theme is repeated 21 times with 21 variations each one more complex and amazing than the last.

    Most artistic anti-smoking PSA ever! I always saw this interpretation of the dance as being a man addicted to cigarettes and the woman is the personification of the cigarette. Something that is deadly, and that the man knows will kill him, and yet he can't break free of the addiction, even though he tries, eventually killing himself due to his love of cigarettes.

    When I saw the film in the cinema I had mixed feelings. Its anti-communism was a little bit too primitive for my taste, although I certainly wasn't a fan or the Soviet Union. But regard with regard to the dance scenes the film was absolutely perfect. And the performance of Le jeune homme et la mort was really the best dance scene I have ever seen.
