The Elegance and Grace of both those dancers was very different from each other yet their Dance number together was and still is the best of all time. In my opinion. I saw Gregory Hines at the Grand in Galveston. He already had lost a lot of weight due to cancer.( I realized that in retrospect.) I think that's why he took a break during his show after doing the stair routine. He asked all former and current hoofers to come up on stage. My husband and friends "encouraged" me to go (they pushed me!). I hadn't danced in a long time and he asked each of us to do a little tap dance. I think I was the last one. to go. He was my hero. I loved and missed tap dancing, having to work hard for a living. When he summoned me, I just hugged him. It took him off guard, and me too! All I could remember was an old standard Time Step dance. After I began, he stopped me, having recognized the dance, took my hand and danced it with me. I thought I was in heaven! He didn't dance with anyone else. It was a year later that he passed away. I wrote a letter to his father and received a reply from Negrita, his fiancé, in which she sent me the prayer card from his funeral. What a thrill.
That is an absolutely beautiful story, incorporating years of history of one of the greats in tapdancing, with multiple generations of tapdancers. Thank you so much for sharing. 🙂

She wanted to see white nights before I did and she just raved about it and when I went out to visit my family, She took me to say it.Was still playing in the theater there. I don't think this movie. It was listed on TH-cam as being one of the great tap dances of all time in a movie. What they did was a soft shoe. Many people would not have called it that, but it was.
2 of the greatest dancers--- they pushed the boundaries a tap dancer and a famous dancer from the ballet. Who would think they would compliment each other so well.
Two totally different dance carriages in their bodies! Tap dancers and ballet dancers carry themselves so differently. This is a very clear way of seeing that. It’s pretty amazing how that is.
I actually think Hines does this particular dance marginally better than Misha. It is tap, and he is obviously more comfortable in the form. Misha is always the first to admit that there are certain dances does not do as well as others... Tango for example.
Yes, and I would add THEN also observe the entire piece together after observing each individual style. They do sync. I am here because I saw a part of this clip on Twyla Tharp's bio on PBS and I wanted to see more. When you see Twyla's method, it brings so much more to this table. All amazing talents. And to those on here who have bashed David Pack...oh, please. His vocals can carry any song. This was the eighties, people, and the 80s had a certain sound, didn't they. I really like it. I've enjoyed it so much, gotta buy the DVD now.
They are both incredible. Two of the greatest in their prime. Greg Hines lacks a little bit of Baryshnikov's flexibility but makes up for it with incomparable grace and fire; you can't take your eyes off him.
Fumble: In tap you’ve got to have flexibility, but you must tighten up to land a tap on the floor. Ballet’s flexibility transcends the floor, as it’s just where you may land, if there’s no male partner.

However, those dance scenes which -- let's face it -- were the point and the reason for this movie, make up for everything. If you have the DVD, the directors commentary is really good. At one point he described how easy it is to work with dancers, because, unlike normal actors who get restless after multiple takes to get everything perfect... dancers are content to do it again and again and again to get it perfect. He described choreographers as sadists, and dancers as masochists!!
I recently watched "death & the young man" scene, the opening of the movie...Baryshnikov is so unbelievably gifted...pure pleasure to watch again and again. 😑☺️
I got to see Hines in Vegas in the mid-80s, in one of those places where you sit at tables instead of theater-type seats. My seat was RIGHT next to the stage; I literally could rest my elbows on it & Hines was within about 3 feet. He was utterly mesmerizing; I knew from seeing him on film that he was an incredible dancer & actor & babe, but in person....holy moly! The electricity & charisma poured off him in near-visible waves, and the way he moved was almost superhuman. We're both lucky he didn't end up slipping in the big puddle of my drool.
