Merle was THE man . I used to listen to his Okie From Muskogee live when I did the graveyard shift alone as a airport parking attendant . He was absolutely one of the best country music singer entertainers ever .
That's true. To my ear, Merle's performance has nuances and vocal attributes that Ben's does not. In my imagination, Ben's version sounds like I would have expected Merle's to sound, when Merle was Ben's age (if you get what I mean). There are qualities that come only with age and experience. Let's hear Ben's version again in 20-30 years. Also, keep in mind that Merle's version is an ORIGINAL... Ben's is a copy... Ben had the model of how to do it. Merle did not.

Everything about this, the song, the tender vocal, the acoustic guitar solo, is masterful and of the highest artistry. It just happens to be by a C & W artist but it transcends the genre. I would love to hear a soul man like Al Green cover it. It is just magnificent, elegant and spare - the greatest beauties like the Parthenon or Elizabeth Taylor require no makeup - and moving, without a speck of corn or cliché.

i use to look forward to an 8hr vacation ride just to listen to Merle alllll the way up up north and remember being sad when we reached our vacation spot and then looked forward to the return trip home....thank you soooo much Mr Haggard for all the wonderful music you left us with RIP!

Under Rated doesn't even describe it. I have been playing Haggard for forty years and just recently at a Jam finally found another guitar player that knew it and played it. SO we did it. Freaking Awesome song. Only Standing O I ever got and Owe it all to Merle.

Everybody's a thief due to the internet and shareware, and so there's no money in it if your just counting on talent. And the marketers have dummed the music down and made it a point to make it all sound the same with mediocre talent so they don't have to pay 'em for their uniqueness. If a player don't like it, there's nothing special about him, and they just replace him. The money is all made on the stage and, and that's why tickets cost so much. It's the only way for the artist to balance his budget. I'm watching this video for free right now. You can't come from experience (jail, etc) and make it on talent anymore. Merle said he don't mind it though because he's such a high volume seller, his portion of I-tune profits keeps him rollin in the doe and he has no overhead. He said he feels bad for the young artist though tryin to gain a foothold. But to your bigger point, yea, the talent is out there. You could take the talent out of my or prob any small town and outdo American Idle and what the radio plays as a whole every night.

I thought it was very well done. Ben did a good job. Good instrumental. However, someone forgot to hire a saxophone player. That sax was a big part in the other Merle versions.
Milo Tilo who made comments about "paranoia" is so absurd,,,,,Merle has always had that style with expressions,,,,as he has said in interviews,,he doesn't have the voice he had when he was younger, so he has to work harder to reach some notes,,,,,Milo take time to research this man and his music a little more, your life and appreciation of music will be richer by doing so.
