I think this is his all time masterpiece. There are many country music singers, but the Hag really digs into his soul. He's the best "troubador" that ever lived.
This is a masterpiece, written and performed by what has to be the best country artist of the past 50 or more years. My wife and I have danced in our living room to to this version at least once a week since we discovered it about 18 months ago. Thank you Merle!
This song is in my definitive "Top 5" of any and all Hag's tunes. And I've been a colossal fan since age 19 or so and I'm 59 now so over last 40 years I've heard em all again and again and this puppy still makes hair on back of my neck stand at attention. LOVE IT!!!
The greatest.....an understatement if there ever was one.....and it all came about honestly. School of reality, life, hard knocks, ups, downs, sucesses and failures. No stupid popularity television shows, synthesized sound, just a guy who lived it, sang about it and did it his way every step, and connected with his audience like no other. His staples are true American treasures, hard to find a better example of songwriting than "Mama Tried". "It's all in the movies", although lesser known, did receive pretty heavy airplay on am radio(wbap). Another of his greatest(he didn't write it) is "What have you got planned tonight Diana". A love story if there ever was one. When I sing it, it is diffucult to get through the last verse if I think about it too much. God Bless Merle Haggard!!
So sorry about your husband's passing. I hope this song gives you some comfort. My husband passed away suddenly l0 years ago; he was the love of my life.
An absolute legend! He touched not only generations of country fans but classic rock fans as well. Keith Richard - no less- calls him one of his inspirations! God Bless his memory may future generations hopefully appreciate him like so many have.
I've had this bookmarked for years. Love this song. Toby Keith was talking about it on an 80s country show and sang it - was one of his favorite Merle Haggard songs. Toby was always a big Merle fan. Merle had such an impact on people I never tire of his singing. The older he got it got even better to me like this song.
What a beautiful song! Merle Haggard had one of the best and most soothing voices in country music, and this song showcases that soothing quality. This is one of my favorite songs by Merle Haggard. Rest in peace, Merle. Country music has lost one of the all-time greats, but Heaven definitely has a new angel.
Wow Wow wow! I am so glad to find this song again. Stunning lyrics which seem so sad and hopeless at first, but after 2nd, 3rd, and 4th thought.... open a door to a more mature way to think about love and relationships. As a songwriter myself his words and holistic presentation are mind-blowing! Thanks for this. It inspired me to get back to writing! ed
A true legend will sadly be missed ,Rest in Peace Merle. Thanks to TH-cam and all you good folks for the good post and thanks for having good taste in music .
First heard this song in Pasadena California while working as painter. I had just graduated from high school and my boss loved country music First heard on an AM truck radio never forgot it.
There is great music and then there is a signature Haggard tune. This is simply fabulous and something that does not get much airplay, perhaps because it is so different for much of Merle's audience. Merle did a jazz album a number of years ago that a Toronto Jazz station featured a month or so ago that really was a surprice and, unfotruntaely, is hard to find...... sort like "All in the Movies"
One of the most artistic performances I’ve ever heard. The graceful nuances…… what his mind could imagine, his heart could sing. One of the great Masters.
Merle was the very best of the best. He was truly the Best. He was a great song writer, he cold play any instrument he choose to play. The world will miss the Hag for many years to come. RIP Merle Haggard.
You can see Roy Nichol's influence on Merle when he picks this song out. Especially the bottom to top strumming. Wish I could go back to 1984 and see these two together again before Roy left the Strangers band. What a show it was then Just Stellar.
We sure lost a wonderful man back in 2016. There will never be another Hag like this one. His sons all four of them are great too. I know he would be proud ♥️
Another #1 hit for Merle Haggard on the Country & Western charts. It was the 361st #1 C&W song of the Rock Era. It also hit #11 on the Canadian C&W charts.
... so sorry. You lost your hubby. May God Bless You and Your Family. Now and Aiways. Maybe he's smiling in Heaven. Along side. Merle. Looking down. Here. Never. Know. 🙄
+Richard Cagle A very sad day every where for sure. Loved all of Merle stuff , been a fan for more years than I can say and this song is my all time favorite ! Can't listen without losing a few tears , everytime ! A hurt so good song ! Love Ya Merle, Thanks for all the ear massages !
Rich, Toby Keith got Merle to revisit this song years after Merle wrote it. You can see Merle playing this song with Toby in a vid on the bus together in Nashville. A great song by the Hag.
They were so much in love with life, happy every way. But love the movie began with, some how got lost in the play. Like a fire burning out of control, You got caught up in the actor's role, And you cried on my shoulder when it came to an end. But that's all in the movies, It won't happen to you and I. That's all in the movies; so baby don't cry. It's all in the movies, It won't happen to us I know. That's all in the movies, Just a bad picture show.
I think this is his all time masterpiece. There are many country music singers, but the Hag really digs into his soul. He's the best "troubador" that ever lived.

My favorite Haggard tune
They were so much in love with life, happy every way.
But love the movie began with, some how got lost in the play.
Like a fire burning out of control,
You got caught up in the actor's role,
And you cried on my shoulder when it came to an end.
But that's all in the movies,
It won't happen to you and I.
That's all in the movies; so baby don't cry.

That's all in the movies,
Just a bad picture show.

Thanks for another great video CountryJazzJohnny! Have always loved this song. Miss hearing Don play sax and trumpet.
Just BEAUTIFUL. I Read that His Daughter Kelli helped write this Song.
This song is what lead me to fall in love with country music. 1975. What a year.
Oh, goodness, I haven't heard this song in years! Thank you!
The fact that even a mere 27 people gave this a thumbs down astonishes me.
WHAT A LOVELY MAN I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED YOU AND YOUR MUSIC RIP 💘
Will we ever see another like him! 😢
Almost as if he's singing about the present covid era, how whole ways of life (see audience) can end unexpectedly. Amazing
Great song, flawlessly done by The Hag! 💙
