The metaphor "Monkey on my back", is where the title comes from, as the "monkey" in the song is the monkey on Robbie's back. Specifically, the destructive side of his personality when he had a cocaine addiction. And the monkey could also be a metphor here for drug addiction itself. This is my fave Robbie Willams song, it's so full of drama and edge, I just love it.

The Monkey that Robbie was talking in this song was about "the monkey on his back", the inside demons that Robbie fight during a period of time of his life, like his addiction to drugs and alcohol.

It's about Robbie how he was feeling at that time he was battling a lot demon's .he wasn't well .with lot mental health struggles .addictions .I'm happy things have turned out better for Robbie he is in happy place .now . Good one to watch .when Robbie got back with his old band take that !! He played lot gigs called progress in my view he stole the show he was great . This Robbie at his peak . Also happy are American friends are starting to getting to know him more . Great front man .
