The plus of a GV overdrive is you can pull it and transfer to another vehicle, all you need if not apples to apples is the adapter.I just installed my 2nd one in a flat bed dually work truck, 1st one I installed 18 years ago in a hotrod and it's still working flawlessly. I love these things.

Old man neighbor of mine way back drove an old Studebaker pickup truck for over 50 years I remember and it had three overdrive levers that you would pull out like choke rods back in the day that old truck used to fly down the highway and got good gas mileage

Just finished my 89 S10 with a nicely built 355 4 bolt main engine. Turbo 350 trans w/shift kit. Installed the Sniper Fuel injection kit and that works very well with the new engine. It has a stock 10 bolt rear end with 342 gears and mini spool. I'm saving for the gear vendor to deal with the high RPM issue on the highway... it's taken 4 years and about 20k but it's worth it now that it's so close to being what I've wanted since the first time I saw the first generation S10..

I had a Triumph Spitfire with a two- speed rear end. It had a switch on the shift knob to go from low to high, giving you eight gears. For racing on curved roads it was fantastic. Clicking the switch to downshift is a lot easier than shifting the gears.

So can the overdrive shift at the same shift points that an automatic transmission is set to shift at? Or does the overdrive shift at an RPM lower than the transmission?

I have a 1970 340 Cuda 4 speed.& 3:54 diff. At 61 years of age I like to still do all my own automotive work. I had to decide if installing a brand new 5-6 speed transmission would get the rpm's down enough at 70 mph to about 2000 rpms on the highway where I like to take the Cuda for a rip. The cost of a brand new 5-6 speed transmission, cost of the new clutch assembly and drive shaft modification goes well over 6500.00 dollars, that does not include the hassle of the installation......thats a no sale for me. The gear vendors transmission $price is almost half price of the brand new 5-6 speed brand names. I can put my car on my ramps and attach the over-drive to the back of the manual tranny myself, measure the drive shaft and have it shorten....thats all reasonable for me. Its way cool to be able to turn my 4 speed into a 8 speed and have the golden fuel economical 2000 rpm's at 65-70 mph !

I put one in a 1984 Chevy LAZYDAZE G30 MOTORHOME and just run mine in OD at highway speed. I had a situation where I thank god I put it in: this motorhome was underpowered with a 350V8 and we were climbing up Sunwapta pass between Banff and Jasper national parks in Alberta, Canada. The pass was very steep and had no guardrails. The 350 V8 didn't have enough power to climb the pass in 2nd gear and in 1st gear, it was overheating, so I turned on the defroster all the way and put the transmission in 1st gear overdrive and made it over the pass doing 25 mph. SPOOKY to say the least!! it will stay in OD as long as you are above 15 mph. I just read the operating manual and talked to them about it.. this was 10 years ago in 2009. gets about 10.mpg on flat ground, that is what I got driving CA--99 in California's central valley. Dad said best he ever got was 7-8 mpg. vehicle weighs 7200.lbs w/ 4.56 gears now in OD 3.56.

@@glennredwine289 Hi Glenn..I just bought an old 82 Chevy Cube Van with the same 350 V8 an TH400 transmission...can you tell me exactly what you put into yours? This thing has been sitting for 15 years and the engine now runs great and the Tranny shifts real nice too, after "refreshing" as much as possible without a rebuild. MPG are terrible tho... @@SnailmailtruckerHI I put a gear vendors OD W/ 22% OD effect. it worked well and actually gave me 6 forward gears. Had it installed at camping world. in Santa Fe springs, CA. I put into a VERY HEAVY 1984 CHEVY 350v8 powered G30 LAZY DAYS. My dad bought this RV and didn't know much about vehicles and Lazy Daze didn't recommend any different engines this OD unit will allow you to run it in 1st gear overdrive as long as you stay above 15 mph. this OD unit was literally a lifesaver for us because this vehicle was so heavy and so underpowered we could have been killed w/o it. We were climbing up Sunwapta pass in the Canadian Rockies crossing from Banff N.P. to Jasper N.P. and the pass was so steep and our RV was so underpowered that it could not climb the pass in 2nd gear and it was overheating in 1st gear, so I turned on the defroster on all the way, opened the windows and put the RV IN 1st gear overdrive and was able to pull over the pass at 25 mph, fast enough to keep the engine from overheating. The road was a narrow two lane road with no guard rails on the sides. This RV I think must be 7200 lbs and has 4.56 rear gears. I get about 10 mpg running on flat ground. Or that is what I seemed to be getting driving up CA-99 IN California's Central Valley and running cruised controlled at 65 mph. The Canadian Rockies trip was back in 2009 and the drives up the Central Valley were in 2010. My father had told me that the best he had ever gotten was 7-8 mpg. Your van unloaded will probably do better.
