It may be an excuse for a bad performance but it's also a reality, the distraction isn't that he will be fabulously wealthy if he goes to Madrid or signs a huge deal with Liverpool. The distraction is that he's likely to not be very unsure which path he wants to take and has a plethora of things to weigh in the balance, disappointing or pleasing loved ones, being looked at as less of a hero in his hometown, being a global brand and famous beyond his dreams at Madrid, no longer being near his closest friends and family, experiencing a new culture, on and on and on. If anything was affecting Trent it would have been more the reaction of the fans and the atmosphere around the speculation of him going to Madrid. Playing in front of a home crowd knowing that many fans aren't looking at him in the same light as they have. That's going to have a psychological effect on most people.
