Deborah Wheeler I'm totally with you on that. About the Jane Austen books. Every high school girl, or post high schooler, should have the opportunity to read P and P, Sensibility, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park. Each of these teach so many important lessons on relationships, it's incredible. My daughter and I enjoy reading them together. This version of P and P is the BEST and , in my opinion, can NEVER be surpassed. I don't see how it's possible. :D And I even read it with my 20 year old son before he left for boot camp. He loved it also. Anytime the movies in, he stands and just smiles. He enjoys all the bantering back and forth between Darcy and Lizzy and all the miscommunication. lol

Do you like Persuasion? i love it, though it is so heartbreaking most of the way through. I read The Diary of Captain Wentworth by some modern author and it was so fun to see HIS SUPPOSED viewpoint of Anne. Excellent, though it wasn't written by Jane, herself.

It most definitely *has* stood the test of time. 1995? Wow. I've seen it, no end of times and after some gap, watched it again the other day, all six episodes and it *still* gripped me.
So much so, that I'm currently re-reading the novel and loving it just as much as the T.V. series.
Of course, it helps to have a picture in your mind as to what the characters might look like!

If the idea of going back in time appeals, try “Lost in Austen”. In this mini series, a modern girl exchanges places with Elizabeth Bennet through wild and crazy plot machinations (willing suspension of disbelief is required here). And then chaos ensues! Great fun. The people who wrote and produced it totally understand the P and P life and appeal. So give it a go. You will enjoy it wholeheartedly.

    • @glendodds3824

Hi. According to Jane Austen, Mr Bennet had an annual income of £2,000, which means that the Bennet's were much better off than almost everyone else in the country. For example, in 1820 (seven years after Pride and Prejudice was published) Patrick Brontë, whose daughters Charlotte, Emily and Anne became famous authors, was only earning £170 per annum as the parson at Haworth. Moreover, despite his much lower income, Patrick was middle class and earned more than double the sum of the average man in the street. (Mr Bennet's income is mentioned by Jane in Volume 1, Chapter 7,, whereas the information on Patrick's income comes from Juliet Barker's book, The Brontës).

    • @draculiya
      @draculiya 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes, partly. In the book the Bennets were landed gentry, meaning they actually owned quite a bit of the surrounding land. The main problem was that mr Bennet thought he would have a son to inherit the (quite valuable) estate, and take care of mrs Bennet and their daughters. Without a son, the estate went to a cousin, mr Collins. This was made worse by mr Bennet neglecting to save so that his daughters could marry well. This idea that the primary objection to Elizabeth and Darcy’s marriage is the Bennets being poor is nonsense, it is their family’s general imprudence and impropriety. 2005’s «Grime and Prejudice» only compounded that misunderstanding by making them considerably less well off, to create an easier conflict for modern audiences to grasp than one of manners and prudence.

I do like this film better than the others I have seen, such as the Laurence Olivier one, the Elizabeth Garvie one and the Keira Knightly one. I was wondering on the necklines of the dresses. Which film is more likely to be typical of the period of the film. I have heard that the film with Olivier cast women in the roles who were perhaps a decade too old for the characters, and they tried to minimize the effect by giving them exaggerated bonnets that are probably not authentic. It was said that they assimilated the costumes to Gone with the Wind, which appeared before the Austen film. One can see the difference in comparison to later films that tried to match the ages of actors to the characters and the costumes to the period. But were the necklines higher in the Regency period or about as shown in the various films? Or are they adapted to our contemporary audience tastes?

The reason that it is in the era is because the book took over 10 years ago for Jane Austen was never happy with the book, she changed so so many times. She started in empire in the book, even if she did changed it she dident in the book. And if they should have film in an other era, it would not been a real Jane Austen movie/tv serie.
The Movie in 05, that was so wrong. The producer did came out and said that he never had read the book. He just looked at the 1995 mini serie and based the movie on that. "Hateful man"

Is this blonde girl dancing with mr. Wickham Anne Lucas (Charlotte's sister)?
I would like to be one of those people standing in the back at the ball as they are dancing and watch Colin Firth.
This is deffinitelly the BEST version of P&P!

No, it was Mary King. The one who inherited all that money. She is the one he threw Lizzie over for. I'm speaking of the girl in the film clip.

Yes, in the rehearsal space with the choreographer, it's Lucy Davis and Adrian Lukis, rehearsing for their roles as Maria Lucas and Mr. Wickham, respectively.
In the film clip, Mr. Wickham is dancing with Mary King, with red/ginger hair, played by Alexandra Howerd.

Arc Kocsog YES! 😀. And the actress who played Lydia Bennet was the daughter in Absolutely Fabulous; such a good actress. I don’t think I ever saw her crack a smile in Ab Fab but I’ve read that she has a wicked sense of humour. Her laugh is so infectious in P&P.

+Darcyfied maybe I was stuck in the thought that the 2005 movie version was the best. And these past few weeks I have been on my historical movie marathon so I decided to go back at ot again

+elle kim It's probably a generation thing, the 1995 version may have been "before your time" (doesn't that sound awful).
