      @@PuzzleQodec--You need to watch Mel Brooks's "Robin Hood: Men in Tights". There's a scene where Cary Elwes (who play Robin Hood) is singing to Maid Marion behind a large sheet and, when his tenor solo hits the high note and holds it, his sword begins to rise as a phallic symbol and his "Merry Men" begin to cheer.

    Oh wouldn’t it be great if we could see Jane Austin watching this production today and listen to what she thinks of it. A fanciful thought I know.

      Yes, I often think it is so sad that she died without knowing what a fantastic success she would be in the future. Many years ago I was standing over the stone in Winchester Cathedral over where she lies and teared up over that very thought. Suddenly I was shocked to hear a voice next to me, it was a member of the cathedral clergy. He seemed to come from nowhere, there wasn't many people about. I can't remember what he said now, I think he asked if I'd come far but he must have seen my sadness. We talked a little about Jane Austen, nothing more. It was just a strange but rather lovely moment that kind of cheered me up.

    they don't really discuss the position of women in society and the way Lizzy's character exhibited an agency that few heroines did at the time

      @Darcyfied  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's probably too deep for such a program. Agency, hmm... interesting point. But there must be other examples from that time though...

    No too sure about Austen's heroine's not being accomplished. Anne Elliot is an accomplished diplomat & seems to take charge of the removal from Kellynch, talks to Benwick about poetry at depth and then tranlates a love song from Italian...and Fanny in MP does her best! Marianne (& probably Eleanor) in S&S are creditable too.

    The worst characters are The Bingley sisters, Collins, Lydia, Mrs Bennet, Lady Catherine.

      maybe worst in terms of selfishness, but as characters they are so necessary for humor and drama. and they are fun to hate

    I think Wickham realized early on that he would be able to keep the wool over Elizabeth's eyes for very long, that is why he switched to Lydia, who was oblivious to his goings on.

    She’s a snob, to be sure. But I actually empathize with her to a certain extent.
    To me, Lady Catherine is frantic at the idea of Darcy marrying Elizabeth because his engagement marks the moment her daughter’s uncertain and potentially bleak future becomes a stark reality. She’s the sole surviving parent of a special needs child. Lady Anne doesn’t look like a woman physically capable of producing an heir and is not attractive. The only sort of men who would be interested in her would be a gold digger.
    In my mind, staying close to Fitzwilliam and Elizabeth should be tantamount to Lady Catherine so they can provide protective oversight and companionship to Anne in years to come. In the book, she does come around after they’ve been married for a bit.

      Or unmarried. Certainly, the actors must have enjoyed playing the characters. I wouldn't want to live in this time period indefinitely but playing at it for a spell would be rather enjoyable.

      Life expectancy was 30-40 years in general. Main characters in the book were very wealthy, even the Bennets, being second class, so they had a better chance to live longer. And in the story there is no mention of the really poor who actually were large numbers at the time. These characters were really privileged people!
