  • Shelley Duvall gave a brilliant and unforgettable performance as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's iconic horror film "The Shining". But behind the scenes, the intense and grueling shoot took a devastating toll on her mental health and well-being.
In this video, we'll explore the harrowing experience of Shelley Duvall on the set of "The Shining," and how it ultimately broke one of Hollywood's most talented and beloved actresses. We'll delve into the ways in which Kubrick's demanding directorial style left Duvall feeling isolated, stressed, and emotionally drained, and how the grueling 12-month shoot pushed her to the brink of a breakdown.

I want to address some of the comments regarding the thumbnail for this video. My intention was never to highlight Shelley Duvall's aging. The before-and-after images were meant to illustrate the significant changes she went through because of the difficult experiences she endured while working with Stanley Kubrick. If you watch my video until the end, my focus was solely on discussing her struggles while working on "The Shining" and how ruthless Stanley Kubrick was to her, and her appearance came with her struggle with her mental health. My goal is to honor her memory and share her story with respect, as she was unfairly treated despite being an incredibly talented actress who brought joy and depth to her roles. Her recent passing is a shock to me and also a tremendous loss as a fan. I hope this message will put an end to the notion that I am disrespecting her, and instead, let's all remember Shelley for the amazing contributions she made to the film industry ❤

This was a nice overview of Shelley Duvall, and I'm so glad she's back in good health. The public's perception of her was for years was far different until the recent decade or so. Through the 80s, when we'd talk about The Shining with friends, we'd all agree it was a long boring film, and Shelley Duvall was the worst part about it. "The movie's nothing like the book!" we'd complain. When the web took off in the 90s, people in the movie discussion groups on the bulletin boards services like Prodigy and AOL, would routinely trash Shelley Duvall as what ruined The Shining. There was criticism about her performance in every movie discussion board. But things changed in recent years when The Shining was re-watched by fans and critics, who discovered The Shining was a lot deeper than anyone initially realized. Now Shelley Duvall's performance is highly praised in The Shining, due in partly due to our understanding of the toll Kubrick's abuse took on her.

This was an extremely hard film to shot but if you checked the information in depth, you would see how much of a stretch it is. We don't even know if the famous 127 shots in the staircase scene had taken place because this number was told to the press by a crew member who wasn't even on plan that day ( Lee Unkrich’s new book on The Shining). And when she got that role she knew what she was signing for (nearly 10 years of acting experience) why aren't we acknowleding how much effort she put in that role, it wasn't that good simply because of the abuse, she did that consensualy and she cared for that film, thus suffered ( Shelley in a 1979 interview with Leon Vitali). After The Shining she lived her life and had a career. Her mentall ilness is not all she is, and she was not an amazing actress because of The Shining. The methods pushed her further and were painfull but it is not a film that caused her problems, she had a personal life too. Shelly is a great actress was thankful for the experience she just wouldn't go through it again.
And to be clear in interviews she said she had a good relationship with Stanley off the plan ( interview done in 2001)

In the shinning, I think shelly'd acting was one of the best I have seen. It wasn't realistic in the sense that is not how people would react in real life. But she rather acting was people, was acting as the exact emotions that go through people in those situations. Like when she is attacked she is not acting like a scares person, she is acting like the human concept of horror itself. The emotions are so raw that it is disturbing.

You missed a lot of information, making this video pretty misleading. For starters, Shelly also did drugs. In fact there is a scene in the making of The Shining that hinted at this, when Stanely walked into a room, and said to her, "It doesn't help you." You literally didn't take _any_ of the information from that documentary, and just went with what people talked about over the internet. XD You gotta check all of your sources and include as much information as possible. Also, The Shining was far from Shelly Duvall's last movie. A lot of Shelly's struggles have been kept private, and they go further than her role in The Shining.

    It's pretty simple really
Shelly Duvall was hired to play an emotionaly abused wife
And what you see when you watch the shining
Is Shelly Duvall being emotionally abused by Stanly Kubrik on and off camera.
A lot of people just don't understand. The 90s and every decade since were a time of domestic softening. If you rewind to the 50's, slapping your wife was considered discipline for a wife that doesn't know her place. "Alice, to the MOON!" was just 20 years earlier. This film was made in 1978. Not only that, but there's a sort of reincarnation motif going back what... a century?
So we were never going to see a "modern woman" in this movie. The movie antiquates itself with its reincarnation timeline... and the shooting took place at a time when women had rights... but they were hardly modern by today's standards.
This is long before modern attitudes on mental health too. People just thought, "Whoopsie... that person's crazy... throw 'em in the looney bin" and got on with their day where today, someone might assume that nobody is NATURALLY crazy and therefore, "someone must have abused this person"
We're going back to the days of casual drinking and driving, dare-I-say EPIC playgrounds, and of course everyone's favorite... lawn darts. The very notion of "safety" was much looser than it is today.
So do I think Stanley Kubrick's treatment of Shelly was inhumane? ("Don't sympathize with Shelly" while having a woman cry hysterically for months on end... hundreds of takes a day) Yes. Yes I do. But that was just another generation of lesser enlightened people than are walking around today. Stanly Kubrick was a product of his generation... just like everyone else.
But yes... I believe we all witnessed the abuse and descent into poor mental health of Shelly Duvall.

Shelley Duvall was an adult. She could have walked off set if she was truly treated that poorly. She herself has said that it helped her know her part completely

Artists tend to be eccentric and perfectionistic, directors are in a special niche because their art is carried out through other people. Eccentric and perfectionistic people + the authority to "command" people = makings of a dictator.
