    You are more a rare bird. Devouring the written word like a drug addict. Faster and faster. More never being enough. But in a kind and generous way! Then there are the videos rushing around and slowing down and going sideways within seven minutes. Clearly better than the rest. Never stop.

    First and foremost, I'm so glad to see you again!
    Your shelves looks stunning, and this has to be the most perfect book shelves tour I've ever seen. In true Paper Bird fashion! Look forward to the next part.
    I hope you are having a great day 😊

    I’ve barely heard about any of these works, and the way you described them is really endearing, there’s so much personality to your reading memory or how you remembered certain things about the writers themselves, very interesting!

    Good day. I've been watching libraries by Spanish and Latin American writers, so this was enjoyable.
    In the 90's at Dolbie Mall in Austin there was a philosophy/foreign language/critical theory bookstore that would have wine and cheese parties Friday nights with music playing by Skinny Puppy. It was there that I bought my Adorno book you have. I didn't know who he was at the time, but It looked interesting, and I had read Walter Benjamin in college, so he seemed like a nice fit.
    Martin Amis in the 80's, along with Julian Barnes, Ian MaCewan, and Chris Hitchens, were part of yet another British invasion. I didn't know Amis had fallen out of fashion. Like you, my into to him was LONDON FIELDS, which I bought when it was initially published.
    Home libraries are out of fashion. One day those of us who still have libraries will be considered the misfits of a bygone age in our neighborhoods.

    • @PaperBird
      @PaperBird  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think i remember that bookstore in Dobie Mall! they had a good selection, i got Fishboy by Mark Richard over there. The University area had some great bookstores back in the day. yeah, always wished to have literary friends over to go over books with in the library room, but i think what visitors i've had are more impressed by the robustness of the shelves (as furniture)

It seems like the most wacked, boring and repetitive producers are filled with an inexhaustible energy to upload.

    Hey man, just wanted to drop this here as a small thank you for being a truly fresh and exciting book channel. You've recommended a lot that I've bought over the last few weeks, the first being that Sleeping fish issue that had that short fiction you wrote in it. Awesome stuff man. T'was a tasty morsel in of itself, and the collective purchases have all in all been worth the destitution it's all put me under.
    Looking forward to whatever you show us next. All the best!
    PS. Is there any way we can get a hand on more of your writing? Cheers

    Looking forward to successive planks. Briefly, what are your thoughts on Ishiguro? He's obviously received a lot of press since the Nobel Prize but have you enjoyed any of his fiction in particular?

    • @PaperBird
      @PaperBird  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the Nobel committee had to backpedal, so arrived at Ishiguro. I'm not sure if you're interested in seeing an author's progression but with Ishiguro it's amazing. Seeing him go from Pale View, then Remains, then totally flipping the script with The Unconsoled. The Unconsoled is one of my favorite novels. I finished Never Let Me Go and threw it against the wall, it was so dumbed down. But then let it marinate, now I really appreciate that one also.

      I can spot that red band through the heaviest thicket of wire. Anyway, I have his Rainbow Stories but never got too far into it. I do find myself extremely fascinated by him though and appreciate the uncommon kind of seriousness his brings to American literature. Do you have a good starting place with him? It is unfortunate they made so few copies of the full set though...you must be glad to have picked it up.

    I think you'll find that while 'in place', she was allegedly spun around by a sumo wrestler, while still dangling from a rope. That didn't actually happen in the book- it was offered by the other guy (who ended up being not a guy) but he didn't accept! Very prudish of him

    • @PaperBird
      @PaperBird  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks, found it -- 'What happens is, the ceiling opens and this oiled princess is lowered down on a silken rope. She's doing the splits. You understand what I'm saying to you? You connect, maybe half an inch. Then a 300-pound sumo wrestler comes through the door, takes her leg in his hands, and spins her like a top.'

    That’s a lot of Rick Bass! Sadly, I must report that he’s an ass in real life. I also found out today - in a very cool, very odd anecdote from my nurse practitioner - that David Guterson is a jerk. Love the tour!

    • @PaperBird
      @PaperBird  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks. now I'm curious, how did you get that impression of Bass? i met him once and he was kind but that was in the context of a book reading he gave. i suppose in most cases, it's better not to meet your heroes in real life.

    • @OldBluesChapterandVerse
      @OldBluesChapterandVerse 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve never read his work, but he was on a panel discussion at the Montana Festival of the Book (as it was then called) one year with Andrew Sean Greer and Marianne Wiggins. I took my students, as we were reading Wiggins’s novel John Dollar for class. And Bass clearly resented having to be there. He was irritable throughout the discussion and short-tempered and sneery with questions from the audience afterward. Andrew Sean Greer, on the other hand, came across as the nicest, most genuine man in the world. Marianne Wiggins was one of the flightiest people I’ve ever met.

    • @PaperBird
      @PaperBird  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i can kinda see Bass acting that way. whenever i saw him read (decades ago) he would appear uncomfortable during the q&a portion. but it was good to see him come out of the wilderness once in a while. that's very cool that you taught at the university there. Montana had/has some fine writers

    • @ad0906013
      @ad0906013 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@OldBluesChapterandVerse That's because he's somewhat of a recluse and not too comfortable around people. But interaction with the audience is a necessary evil that nearly every writer has to do. Don't discern too heavily from that single experience maybe..
