    Your first shelf tour was your best video you have done and you topped yourself with this one! Wonderful. What a joy to see your new shelves and like last time, you did a wonderful job of picking some choice books to spotlight among the many.. the only things missing is a portrait of ME right between Joan and JCO. We will work on that!

I also love to just sit and look at my books.. it's what we do, right?? ☺️Your new shelves are amazing.. I think that a person must arrange to completely suit himself! Love your ‘crib’ Eric! Thank for showing us your bookshelves and all the special books you have. I particularly liked the book your Grandfather bought in London which has the lines, ‘By this is not meant that London is being Americanized physically-far from it. Such could not be.’ 😆 I loved hearing all the stories behind the books and how you arrange your home. I’m waiting for my husband to make me book shelves -I might be waiting a while- so at the moment, books are just shoved on small shelves, however, I think when I get them I will arrange alphabetically but keep separate novels, short stories and non fiction to make mood reading easier.

    Happy new shelves...or happy new library! I LOVE a bookshelf tour. And what a fabulous job your chippy did fixing them to look built in and your desk - wow. I dream of a ladder too! I didn't know you had written a novel - how interesting. I've hardly written a word in the last year or so but I'm just getting back into my third novel, and I think a break and time spent 'just' reading is immensely valuable. Your Grandfather's books is beautiful. How wonderful when books can connect us through the generations like that. It's a special thing. My grandfather had a wonderful library of his own that I remember from when I was a child but since he's died I've not been able to revisit it as an adult (families, hey!) and see what he enjoyed, which is a real shame. I've no idea if it even still exists. Thank you for sharing this. A great video.

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! So good you're getting back into writing.
      I feel like even if we don't have the physical books our grandparents or other relatives had, we can still read the same stories. My grandmother loved Anthony Trollope and now I couldn't read his novels without thinking about her and wondering how she felt about or connected with the story.

    I had no idea that anybody else had "modified Billy" bookcases! Ours are DIY and (sadly, if unsurprisingly) still unfinished, lacking the planned upper molding which will conceal additional lighting. The shelves themselves and the books upon them have been in place for about 5 years. So far so pretty-good. They seem to withstand the weight of most books, including an exultation of novels, my modest 'collections,' and many musical scores/songbooks, but the multi-volume OED has bowed its shelf. Brilliant idea (or you'd not have thought the same!) but over time it might need a few tweaks if not an upgrade, imo.

    I love, love, love this video. I've been looking forward to it for a long time and I wasn't disappointed. Your new place looks fantastic and the way you had the shelves created is so clever. Your Joyce Carol Oates video was not only the first video of yours that I saw, but my first booktube video. It was my gateway video and I don't regret a thing. Nice! Your book collection must have grown enormously by now ☺️ The hack for the built-in shelves worked beautifully. I used to have a semi-custom made library in my previous life, now I have IKEA, and double rows (front and behind) of books on every shelf… things are getting out of control 🤣 So I am leaning more towards checking books out from the library. I have all books in Spanish on one side, alphabetically, all books in translation alphabetically by country on other side, all professional development books on another side (in no order) and books in English (in no order), newer ones to the front, older ones in the back😊 Love our worlds of books ❤️📚❤️

    Thanks for sharing your wonderful books 📚 Wow you have fabulous book shelves, I love the way you customised your billy bookcases. I would love to have my books in alphabetical order however they are all different heights which drives me crazy! My living room shelves are more decorative and I have pretty books which match my colour scheme. You have just reminded me that I need to get floating shelves in my kitchen to display my cook books.

    Omg, what a fabulous book shelf porn video! I loved the shelving idea, the literary gossip, everything: it was just fantastic! I shall be watching this one again anytime I need a bookish pick-me-up.
    I have so much I could say that I feel like making a response video! LOL. For now, I’ll just say that I started reading a David Plante novel years ago, for pleasure when I was a grad student, loved the first 10 pages so much, but because of all my academic commitments, never ever got back to it.
    Coasters: Jane Bowles, Susan Sontag, Eric Karl-I mean, Joyce Carol Oates, Virginia Woolf.

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Shawn, glad it brightened your day. I've actually not even read Plante's main cycle of novels although I did read American Ghosts and his absolutely beautiful memoir The Pure Lover. But, I don't feel inclined to read much more by him. Difficult Women is hilarious though.
      And well done getting all the authors! Full marks!

    All my books are alphabetized by author in four categories: hardcover fiction, hardcover non-fiction, paper fiction and paper non-fiction. When a shelf gets too crowded then I have to move books down to make room for the new one. Sometimes I think I should stop alphabetizing and just arrange them by order of reading them, but so far I haven't succumbed to that. Oh, and I have a shelf of signed books. Love the way your apartment looks.

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

And when you said Jean Rhys is one of your favorite authors, I got excited because I just read Wide Sargasso Sea in July and loved it and her writing so much that I bought a book that houses all of her novels in one, plus a biography of her life. Wow! loved all of this!! I am in awe of your dedication to JCO, I have wondered over the years if there is anyone who has managed to read them all - like have even her publishers/book reviewers? I have my doubts lol. My gateway to JCO was Black Water, a slight novel - or even a novella maybe? Loved the reading experience of it, a girl drowning and the chapters getting shorter and faster, creepy as that sounds. Then afterwards I realised that it was based on a real story and reading up on it (wikipedia) getting so unspeakably angry (at the Kennedy's not JCO). A memorable reading experience and have loved JCO ever since :D

    Eric, this was such a wonderful video and I am quite jealous - my goal is to have something similar installed one day. Actually, I just ordered two additional Billy bookcases so now I need to figure out how to organize my shelves. I'm thinking alphabetically, but with some exceptions; In theory, I would like to keep my Penguin Classics, Barnes & Noble Classics, and New Your Review Books together; however, that might end up being a big unorganized mess in practice. Also, I do have some nice first edition and signed copies I might keep separate from the rest. Maybe...we shall see. Anyways, always fun to see how other book lovers shelves look like, so thanks again for this inspiring video :-)

      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It is a dilemma. Although I find that however we arrange our books we inevitably end up just knowing where things are whether they are alphabetical or not so I say go with how you find them most aesthetically pleasing. :)

    Beautiful bookshelves and what a great collection of books. What a pleasant surprise to discover you like Ionesco, not many do. I should read more by him, especially since I'm Romanian. I'm much more familiar with Emil Cioran and Mircea Eliade, two of his best friends.

    I'm jealous of all that space you've got, and I'm such a snoop, as I love looking at other people's choice of reading, which is why I hate it when people read on electronic devices on public transport, as I can't sneak a look. Unfortunately, I've had to pinch room for my bookshelves, for example one wall of the bedroom is a bookshelf, meaning that things are a bit tight! I built it myself, so it can accommodate all the different sizes. I also built a room divider in the lounge with books on one side, DVDs on the other, but I'd love to have the space to have a proper library.
    Re the coaster authors :
    The rather Mediterranean background made me think immediately of Jane Bowles, and the next, I'm guessing, is Susan Sontag without the streak of white, then, of course JCO and Virginia Woolf. I adore quizzes, which often (but not always) helps.

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, I know I'm lucky to have so much space - especially in London. That sounds like a great set up. If I were more crafty I would have liked to build shelves myself.
      And yes, all those authors are correct. Well done!

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Rene!
      Hmm, depends whether you're in the mood for a long novel or short stories. But I'd say A Book of American Martyrs because then you can get a sense of how good she is at conveying a sense of the passage of time and how ideas filter down through generations. I'd love to know what you think of either book once you get a chance to read them.

    I went phase about collecting autographs
    Total of 15.
    Only have one bookshelf. Last count I have 300 books. Had to put a lot of books into gray tubes.
    Actually helps. Because it comes to a tbr I can't see the books so they don't exist.

    I didn’t see anyone guessing the writers on the coaster, so I’ll try. 1. Jean Rhys, 2 she looks to me like Willa Cather, 3. I know to be JCO 😀. 4. I know to be Virginia Woolf. How did do? I just discovered your channel, and I’m glad you did this tour. Whenever you filmed in front of the shelves, I was always looking behind you trying to see what you had, and then I would have to watch again to hear what you were saying. Thoroughly enjoyed going through your books. Alan Hollinghurst is a particular favourite of mine as is Edmund White. Saw you had both. But, if you allow me, I'd like to suggest something. I have lived in Portugal for a long time and have fallen in love with its literature. I am sure you can find loads of names on the internet but my favourites are the classic 19th century writer Eça de Queiroz, the great Nobel prize winner José Saramago and an author from the north of Portugal called Valter Hugo Mãe who wrote a tremendous book called Filho de Mil Homens (Son of a Thousand Men), among others. Sorry, I have tried to find if it's translated into English but I am not sure...

    • @EricKarlAnderson
      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I talked in my first bookshelf tour about Edmund White more, but I remember when Hollinghurst's The Line of Beauty came out and I saw him in a great event with Colm Toibin.
      I'm afraid I've only read José Saramago and love Blindness & All the Names. There's a bookseller at Foyles on Charing Cross Road who has a particular passion for Portuguese lit and makes recommendations for it all the time. I'll look up the authors you mention.

    I have never complimented a shelf but daaaaamn your shelves looks great! I don’t think I’ve heard you talk about Jean Rhys? I always suspected you might bring her up. I love her so much. I read Difficult Women last year and I kept having to explain to people that it was not the Roxane gay book, lol. I’ve been meaning to checkout David plante’s fiction.

      @EricKarlAnderson  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yeah it's been a couple years since I talked about Rhys but she's a longtime favourite of mine. Such fascinating and a fascinating writing career! I don't think Plante's books are that well known anymore which is a shame. I think I like his memoir The Pure Lover the best.
