    You are an excellent communicator. What I most appreciated here is that you did not try to "over--tech" your language. Rather, you tried to keep it clear and simple. That is what a great teacher does. Again, superb explanation here. You deserve to be congratulated. Bravo!

      You might find my new updated version helpful. The setting you mention is quite new. It will take some experimentation, but basically, if you have an external audio interface doing the work, you could consider tying the RAW setting. But auto might be safer until more experimentation or documentation is available. Check out the update version at: th-cam.com/video/-_bS_nUiqMA/w-d-xo.html

    Thank you again so much for this helpful video. I did what you suggested & I have a question. I am trying to make a video recording thru Zoom that includes audio of speaking and then playing flute. I have done what you suggested to make sure I have the sound settings set up properly but when I replay the recordings, the zoom audio picks up my voice well but almost totally cuts & barely picks up the sound when I play flute. I am going to keep trying to figure it out thru experimenting with the zoom settings. Maybe I should find a non-zoom way of recording :) but this is what I know how to do and have the setup for at the moment. If you have any suggestions or insights, I would love to hear! thank you again!

    Hi, Greg. I like your tutorial. I am preparing for an event that will have different people sing in Zoom. So each guest that is singing must have these settings configured. So if someone is singing and they have a track playing for instance in Windows Media Player, people will hear their voice as well as the track? I am also going to look t your video for the usb mixer, i am thinking about purchasing a focusrite. i see on wish they some usb mixer's as well. Also, I saw that you can share the music or sound off your computer as well. What is the difference between this and configuring the settings to get sound from your computer? Do you still need to configure the settings as well as share sound off your computer or does the function do the same thing? Thanks

      @@GregintheBox So the virtual mixer route's the internal sound? I would imagine it having some degree of latency too? That's complicated. • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey there, so will it work to make everyone sound a little better? yes, but also be sure that anyone who has headphones is using them to minimize echo and feedback. now what I think you’re asking is if these setting will make you be able to sing or play in sync or in time with each other, and the answer to that is no. zoom will not allow for jamming or singing in time with each other due to the delay incurred with the data getting from you, through the web, to your other musicians and back to you. there are platforms that are trying to do a better job at that sort of internet jamming, like sofasession and jamkazzam, but even those are not perfect, and not always easy to use. Zoom is not intended for in sync playing/singing with others over the web, it is simply a way to meet with others over the web with good quality video and audio.

    Greg, thank you for this helpful video! Like many households, we are using our Zoom for both musical instruction and general use (conference calls for work, family conference calls, etc.) My question is...Should we be resetting all the audio settings BACK to default for non-musical instruction use?
    Also, as a share for everyone else here...We have been having some intermittent connection issues with Zoom which is perfectly understandable given the amount of bandwidth the world is consuming right now. It's a little old school but, we found making a hard connection to our router with an ethernet cable has greatly improved the performance of Zoom and other audio/visual streaming services. Many devices are no longer being made with ethernet ports, however if your device has a USB port, you can use an ethernet-to-usb adapter (female ethernet on one end and male usb on the other end) and run the cable into the usb port that way. Those adapters are about $10-$15 and of course your ethernet cable is $10 - $50 depending on how long it is.

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re very welcome. I also use it for both purposes. I don’t switch back and forth. These settings are doing a variety of things but the best way to sum it up is that we are stripping away as much of the processing done by Zoom as possible. For talking and conversation, this processing assists with echo cancellation and background noise removal and auto volume adjustment and compression of the audio signal. All of this results in the best possible communication with webcams, and crappy mics in laptop etc etc and people can be heard and communicate in less than ideal audio scenarios. The down side of all this processing is it makes a guitar or a singing voice sound terrible. So, if your conference calls or chats with family and friends are sounding less than ideal, then yes consider switching these setting back to the defaults, but if you encounter no issues or audio “artifacts”. then keep the settings for both uses of Zoom. Take care.

    Very useful thanks. 🙏 I'm a singer songwriter trying to use Zoom to give guitar lessons. Does my students also need to adjust the audio settings ? + Is a good internet connection required on both ends (for teacher and student) ? Thanks for your help. 😀

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad it was helpful.
      So, in an ideal situation both you and the student apply the settings. This said, if the student does not, it’s still good for you to send the best possible musically appropriate sound quality to them.
      Also ideal, but both you and the student should have some type of audio interface. If you don’t have one, check out my related videos on the subject and their benefits for online sound quality etc. If students don’t have such options (understandable) then simply using headphones instead of the open air speakers of their computer will make a big difference.
      It is also worth mentioning that there are almost no sound options available to students if they are using Zoom on mobile devices like iPhones or iPads. Once again the only easy improvement for mobile devices is headphones, and even using a mic that’s built into some headphones can be a big improvement.
      Lastly, some other interesting resources for musicians and teacher/students online line are, sofasession (they are trying to facilitate in-sync online jamming), and by Mixcord. They allow the creation of jamming videos without extension tech work. If you haven’t experimented with those, they can be fun and useful.
      all the best.

      Hi there, the short answer is no. Everyone does not have to make the setting changes. Anyone who is performing should apply the settings. This will make their singing and instruments sound considerably better to those listening. Anyone just listening (think audience) will hear the improvement of your performance without making changes. Some additional things to keep in mind: 1. The best overall experience will be achieved if everyone mutes their mic when they are listening to performance. Meaning, the only mic that is not muted is the student giving there performance. This is very important. As a host you have the power to monitor your attendees and mute anyone who forgets to mute their mics. Make sure you do that. 2. Any attendees using cell phones or tablets will not have these settings. No such options for the mobile app. The only way to improve the experience for cellphone or telnet users is to encourage them to use headphones. 3. Make sure everyone takes the time to test Zoom before the event. Best of luck with your event.

      Hi Doris, I copied this from another comment with the same question, to make sure you see it. The short answer is no. Everyone does not have to make the setting changes. Anyone who is performing should apply the settings. This will make their singing and instruments sound considerably better to those listening. Anyone just listening (think audience) will hear the improvement of your performance without making changes. Some additional things to keep in mind: 1. Make sure everyone takes the time to test Zoom before the event. Lastly, the settings may cause some echo or some sound issues when just having a conversation. we have turned off some settings related to echo cancellation and background noise suppression. Those settings are great for conversation clarity, but destroy the sound of musical instruments and singing.

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The setting recommendations improve how singing and instruments will sound to others in Zoom. So anyone performing music should consider these settings. Attendees/listeners do not need to apply them. Some things to consider: 1. Anyone listening, should keep their mic muted in Zoom. only the person talking or performing during the event should have their mic on. The host can monitor the attendees and mute any mics that have been left on by mistake. 2. Anyone on a cellphone or tablet will,not have access to these settings. There are no real settings to improve musical performances on mobile devices. The only thing that helps is to use headphones. That will reduce the amount of processing Zoom does to echo cancel and reduce Background noise.

      I wouldn’t use Zoom to do video recordings of your auditions. if you want audio and video recordings of your performances, there are many different softwares, one that is free and very cool is OBS. it’s open source and very flexible, which can make it confusing at first, but lots of online how to videos and once you get it figured out it’s a great tool. there are others of course but this is a free one that comes to mind.

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John. I’m using a Logitech headset. I believe it’s the H540e. This said, if you have not watched my video about Sounding good Online or my video about USB mixers then I would recommend that. The best way to sound good in. omg is to follow these settings, and then use an audio interface or USB mixer with a normal decent vocal mic. Now the other thing I should mention is that if you intention is to sing along with each other in Zoom, then no mic or interface will help with the fact that the latency that is inherent in the internet itself and in video conferencing systems will make in unison/in-sync singing pretty much impossible. The delay in the time it takes for a voice or instrument to make it to the others in the call and then the time for their voice to return to you will make it impossible to sing in time together. I wish there was a way but it’s built into the very nature of how data is sent and received via the internet. So until the internet itself is fundamentally changed and gets faster, such online collaboration sin. ooh and the like are pretty much impossible. This said, singing and play for each other in turn can sound very very good with the knowledge and advice I offer here.
      But hope is not completely lost. there are some other platforms that are trying to achieve the almost impossible right now. And example is sofasession. That website is attempting to connect people together for in-sync jamming. There is no video image involved, which is one of the reasons it might work better for singing in time. that said there is a loss of connection/community when you can’t see each other. Try it out. Another tip to keep your group singing is to suggest acappella. That’s an app that allows you to each add your voice and video to a square and then create a large singing together video. it’s not live but you are singing with/too each other. Try those out. and best of luck.

    Should each Zoom participant do this? Or just the host or the person who is performing? I am organizing a zoom musical performance, however I am not the one performing, one of the participants is and I am wondering if just the performing needs to make the adjustments or should everyone? Moreover, there will be times when we are using the Zoom call just to chat, will having the settings optimized for music have an effect on the quality for just talking?

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, only the performer should apply these changes. The audience members, dont really need to. This said, what is very important is that audience members (listeners) should have their mics mutes in Zoom while the performers are performing. And only turning their mics on to give compliments, questions, feedback, clapping etc.

  • @craigjohnson5536

    Hi Greg, Great video. thanks! I'm hosting a acoustic performance for some friends and have one quick question: do these settings need to be changed just in the performer's Zoom settings or for performer and listeners in order to get the best results? Also, I'm the host but not the performer, do the host's settings matter? Thanks!

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the open mic that we run in Zoom all the performers use these settings. Since I’m usually one of the performers, I don’t know if these settings make a big difference for listeners/audience. I’d do a trial run with one performer and you as host. They apply the settings and you don’t. see how you sound to them and vis versa. Then you apply the settings and compare.

      As for the settings that are different due to Zoom updates:
      Turn on Original Sound (in my video)

      Click on Advanced, and Turn on all the Check boxes, there should be 4.

So they can choose Gallery view or presenter view. There is also an option for the host called spotlighting, this means you can chose who the presenter or performer is at that time. And each individual user can right click on a person and "Pin" them so they see that person all the time.

    This is great info. How you tried it doing an online jam session?

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, but these settings do not improve the inherent delay/latency occurring over the internet itself. So jamming together is sadly greatly impacted by that, almost impossible to my experience. Zoom is for video conversation not jamming, we are simply trying to make the audio as good as possible for playing music or teaching/instructing, over the web. If you want to experiment with jamming online, try JamKazam, or sofaSession. They don’t work as well as some videos suggest but they are fun to try and experiment. You would need a hardwire net connection, a fast audio interface, and finger crossed for good internet connection between you and your fellow jammers.

    • @GregintheBox
      @GregintheBox  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Donna, Sadly the delay that is experienced when try to sing/perform in unison is inherent in the nature of the internet itself. It takes many milliseconds for your audio to get from you to the other attendees and then for their response to that sound to get back to you so in-sync performing is pretty much impossible in Zoom. And this is likely the way it is until some day when the internet itself is remarkably faster. Also, Zoom is a video conference platform that is not really trying to achieve in-sync communication, only a good quality communication experience. Its not really a music platform, just a communication platform. In my musical adventures in Zoom, we are running open mics and virtual gigs for audiences and we can all interact etc but not play in sync together. The settings mentioned in this video give the best possible audio quality for such things, they make a huge difference. This all said, there are other websites/applications attempt to do nothing but in-sync music performance. www.sofasession.com/ is the easiest and one of the more promising, but the internet is still the internet so can't promise it will be perfect, but the whole intention of that website is to be able to sing or play together. There is no video, available, but that is one of the reasons why it might work better than Zoom for in-sync singing. Give it a shot, and best of luck.

      Hi there. These settings will improve quality but will not improve the delay (or latency) that is inherent in both video conferencing platforms and the internet itself. Attempting to sing together will be quite frustrating. This said singing in turn for each other works and the settings will improve the quality for that. If you want to include music and sing in sync with it, then you might have noticed that playing music on the same computer(device) that is running the Zoom call and attempting to sing along with it results in an out-of-sync result for listeners as well. So a couple suggestions: Consider using something like Acappella to record separate tracks and build a video of you all singing together. Its not ideal but keeps your singing community engaged. 2. Try singing with sofaSession, its not perfect either but sofasession is at least trying to create an environment where people can sing and play together online. Way less sync/latency issues. Still happens but much less than Zoom. P.S. sofa session is just audio, no video (Thats partly why its more "in sync"). Lastly, to play music and ensure its in sync with what your singing for others to hear, the only guaranteed way is to use a USB mixer and mix the sound from say your cell phone and mic (for your voice), and feed that into your computer. Best of luck.

      GregintheBox Thanks Greg for taking the time to respond. Does the share sound option on Zoom help? I think we can turns and sing. Or max sing in pairs.. hoping that would be workable? I will look into sofasession (although I would prefer to see others) and the USB mixer.

      Yes you are correct, I have an updated version of this video for the current version. However, also be aware that there are no advanced options in mobile devices (Phones and tablets). Best of luck
