I actually loved Brenda and find that people were gaslighting her in many situations. She was different and was refreshing. I was sad when she left the show.
Couldn't STAND Brenda!! She was a big whiner!!! Guess I was like most viewers.
@@susanrebizant4567 I found the others were gaslighting her. She was not afraid to be hereself and stand up for herself. I did not like her when I was a teenegard, but as a grown up after rewatching the show, I saw her with different eyes. I loved the show with all of them though!
The I hate Brenda fad was pretty much a US thing. The show was hugely popular in other countries and there was no hate for Brenda, but rather she was a favourite character.
No one was a bigger whiner than Kelly and her baby talk.

Whatever your feelings are about Brenda or Kelly, how anyone can possibly side with Kelly in this situation is beyond me. How incredibly foolish Brenda must have felt when it was revealed. That she was talking to Kelly about this and she ended up being the one he messed around with…wow. Dylan messing with Kelly and Brenda messing with Reeeck are not even remotely the same thing.

And if you think about it. Deep down you can tell Brenda already had suspicion on Kelly, which is probably why she brought it up. Remember that look she gave Kelly and Dylan when she was leaving for Paris. You could already see her having doubts about leaving. And clearly she just felt it more, when she returned, without them even saying it yet.

I think Brenda deep down suspected Kelly from the start and its why she went to her to talk to her about it, she probably just didn't realize it. The look she gave kelly and Dylan when she was leaving for Paris said it all. She probably felt it then & then when she returned it was probably in the back of her mind, until it came out and she wasn't ready to accept it, cause she trusted them the most.

The Brenda/Dylan/Kelly love triangle really is one of the show's most complex storylines. Too bad so many of its viewers lack nuance.
You think? I think it's bcs vast majority of people simply loved Brenda and Dylan together. I get it - Kelly was into him way before Brenda even showed up and Dylan THOUGHT they have this connection. But it was proven later on their relationship was more physical than anything else and the connection they had that summer did not last. If Brenda didn't leave Kelly and Dylan would never happen...
@brontiq Dylan eventually spent a lot of time with Brenda offscreen after his wife was killed, and things didn't seem to last between them. When he returned to California in season 9, he was closer to Kelly than ever before. Kelly was adamant upon giving things with Matt a chance, which forced them both into a friendship for almost the remainder of the series. They only had sex once in that time, so no. Their relationship wasn't purely physical, nor was it for the one summer. They shared a deep, genuine connection, because that's what the writers wanted to depict.
By all means, if you prefer Brenda and Dylan, go for it. They also share a deep connection to each other. If you hate the Dylan and Kelly relationship too, that's also valid. If you disagree with how the show ended up, that's your opinion and I'm not trying to take that away from you. But to say that all they had in common was the physical contradicts the *years* of content put into the series. Dylan and Kelly sincerely fell in love over the course of season three, and developed passed that (even after their relationship fizzled out).
And I agree with OP. Beverly Hills was one of the first shows to tackle best friends sharing a massive love over a guy, while showing they might have been still capable of having love for one another beneath the pain of it all. Tbh, had Shannen not been fired, I think she and Kelly would have gotten close again, and laughed about the stupid way they fought and got jealous over Dylan.
@@brontiq 100%... The only similarities Kelly and Dylan shared were their upbringings. Kelly pursued Dylan as revealed at the slumber party, but Dylan wasn't interested, and you're right, it was purely physical with Kelly plus it was less hassle dating Kelly because she didn't have a father that constantly tried to keep them apart like Jim did.
As far as season 9, maybe Brenda outgrew Dylan to a point or maybe she was tired of being a part of the Kelly, Dylan Brenda love triangle. Whatever the reason, Kelly screwed over Brenda and betrayed her on all levels, and then played the victim every time Brenda and Dylan went near each other.
Kelly laid claim to Dylan forever, and if Brenda even dared to go near him, Kelly would go ape sh*t, even though she stole him from her in the first place.
I used to love Kelly's and Brenda's friendship, but after Kelly did that to Brenda, I hated Kelly from then on. She was a sh*tty friend!!!!
@@lnicole2504 From the first scene between Dylan and Brenda Kelly clearly showed that Dylan interested her... and Brenda didn't pay attention to it... in reality Dylan still flirted a little with Kelly before knowing Brenda.. Kelly told Brenda... we understand that he knew Kelly without really knowing her and he got to know the person she is while Brenda was in Paris, that's what changed. ...Dylan was the first guy who was interested in her for something other than her looks, which is what she liked. Kelly was extremely lacking in self-confidence and always believed that men would be interested in her for her looks.I'm not even adding the number of times Dylan had to tell her that it wasn't just her looks or sex with her who interested him. (although it must be admitted that sexually Dylan had better chemistry with Kelly).
As for Kelly and Brenda's friendship, I never felt any friendly chemistry.

Dylan and Kelly flirted, and he had the chance to date Kelly, but he picked Brenda. Jim drove a wedge between them. He essentially broke them up. He broke his own daughter's heart.
I always felt that Brenda and Dylan had a sweet first love type of romance. You know, first loves die hard. Maybe they would have ended up together or maybe they wouldn't have, but it seems like between Jim and Kelly's sabotage.. They never had a chance.

It was Dylan who keot tryung ti get her to talk about it, saying where does that leave you? Like NOW he cares? Dylan is just as bad as Kelly if not worse. Kelly wanted it ended, Dylan kept pushing.
If she wanted it ended, then why did she want to avoid both Dylan and Brenda? She was so bitter about everything that she even went to change her class schedule. That's not forgetting what happened.
I never liked Kelly after this scenario.
Luke & jen get along great off set,but their characters lacked chemistry,& the writers knew it,but had 2 experiment w/ temporarily breaking the brenda/dylan team coz shan was having personal issues & they feared she may be dismissed from the show.
Brenda or not they weren't going to make her stay in a relationship with Dylan until the last season

The way Dylan got so jealous when Brenda confessed about Rick! I mean why, especially when he was messing around with Kelly. Brenda only kissed Rick once! With that one kiss she let Dylan know she met someone, but he on the other hand made out with Kelly in the cabanna at least a couple times and then spent the night with her on the beach. How ppl can call Brenda an equal cheater as Kelly and Dylan is beyond me!

I think it was Tori Spelling who said in an interview many years later that, at the time, media aimed at teens was not teen seriously, so there wasn't a clear pathway for them to move beyond 90210. There were a couple of teen idol types from that time who transitioned successfully into grown up roles, but they were the exception. Shannen Doherty actually was one of those few, with Charmed.
