This is seriously the most perfect final level for this game imho. It's challenging as hell in a good sort of way: It tests you on the first segment in keeping your cool under fire and keeping your shots straight. The second part tests your aim when needing to also make tight maneuvers, then the final stretch: "Alright, cowboy. Let's see how you REALLY handle that ship!"
This was a great final level. I remember being a kid playing this and finally beating it, was awesome. At one point I was really good at this level, could beat it every time I played it. Now I suck at it
Oh, right, because the escape sequence after defeating Andross on hard difficulty in Star Fox 64 was ripped straight from Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

I was never able to finish this level. After the main reactor was destroyed, I always either got engulfed by the explosion or smashed the X-Wing into the tunnel.

I never understood it, either. One reason I could think of is that it would loop easier, but on the first mission (Death Star Attack) only the original recordings were used-even looped. Another reason could be that there was no space on the disc for more CD music anymore. A final reason could be the sound designers to show off how “real” their MusyX system sounds compared to John Williams’s score, but that would be a lame reason-even for that time..
I liked it. And it's not MIDI, it's just an ordinary track but synthisised and exported. AS far as I see it's an element of suprise on first walkthrough. And it gets more tension with the music changing from what expected to unexpected.

The thing is that this mission is in co-op of RSIII where all melodies are orchestrated and we have two games (RSIII and RSII Co-op) on the same 1.4GB disk as the original RSII recorded. Your accuracy was to low to earn a gold medal on this mission. The game does not allow you to see the gold medal requirements once you already earned a gold medal. It simply shows you the gold medal you have earned and your stats. The complete requirements for this mission were: Time=5:05 Enemies Destroyed=41 Accuracy=32% Friendlies Lost=0 Lives Lost=1 Targeting Computer Efficiency=95%
I just bought, played, and beat this game/level. This game is a masterpiece. What an amazing week of gameplay. Love the first Rogue squadron, so bought this and Rebel strike on whim, best 30$ i spent Ina while. Never had the GameCube, got a wii tho :-p anyway... i miss these challenging arcade types. This level is a testament to these classic challenge worthy/bang for your buck games... this level took me a few hours to lock down...still have 4 bonuses levels👍🏻so To make a long story short (too late..).. ...This shit rules. i did and HOOO BOY lemme tell ya. it was a nightmare. the millennium falcon flies like brick and is a giant target.if you manage to get the core taken out, or hell, survive the tie fighters, your going to have a VERY fun time trying to steer in the vent shaft to and from the core. at the sacrofice to your accuracy, the bottom turret turns around to shoot the enemies behind you but only while your firing, so dont expect to get any medals here.
I remember discovering a little cheat with this level. If I stayed just enough ahead in the first part without getting too far ahead, I didn't have to worry about loosing Lando or Wedge (depending on who I played) to the Tie Interceptors. For some reason, they didn't get destroyed, even though I was ignoring the chasing Tie Interceptors.
This mission was actually more difficult in the cooperative version (from Rogue Squadron III), since someone would get stuck flying the Falcon every time. I also once accidentally shot my friend down with the Falcon's rear turret when I was trying to shoot a TIE fighter behind me.
And the guy who plays Wedge decides against coming back, sadly... >.> strangely... >.> *conspicuously* enough. It's no real big deal. The actor himself knew that Wedge was just an extra character who never dies. So he knew he'd get bored of the role if he reprised it in the upcoming film.
I could beat this level by myself; no problem. Try beating this level on Rogue Squadron III co-op with a complete idiot who doesn't understand the theory of the inverted control stick in flying games. Let me know how long it takes for you to lose your sanity. By the way, what do you use to record Gamecube games?

You are exactly right. We used the whole keyboard to control the Falcon. AND a control pad! I can't see how this is challenging at all. Spoon-fed I think. Puts the enemies right in front of you. Video games are so easy nowadays.
Who used to give it a - 'that was to close' when flying the falcon, me and a friend did every time haha Did this in co-op level a million times with a uni friend and never made it - used to fail as the blaze came out of nowhere. Always wondered if you just had to keep flying straight as the blaze surrounded you :(
Most unbeatable level ever put into a game. Instant lose every fucking time. I get blown up & so does the falcon. No strategy that can be used. A 300 aircraft job given to 2 aircraft. At least the battlefront games dont expect 1 man to do the work of a hundred
God, what I wouldn't give to be flying the Falcon instead of an escort mission. Terrible design, we just had nothing better, and we still don't. Very sad this is the best we got. The falcon is made of tissue paper that is already on fire when the level starts and you get about five seconds before it's dead. There's challenging, and then there's just cruel and ridiculous game design. Not to mention you can't keep speed with it and to speed up YOU HAVE TO SHUT OFF YOUR GUNS.

The key is to keep your S-foils closed, but to decelerate and accelerate when it's appropriate.
this level is hell!!! to this day, i've only beaten it once, and that was though sheer dumb luck.

I pretend it never happened and Legends is the real timeline. So then came The Truce at Bakura
out of all the rouge squadron games, this one certainly had the best final level.
Maybe if the falcon wasn't made of tissue paper. Restarting in five seconds fifteen times is not fun to me.

Maneuverability. All the speed in the galaxy won't mean diddly if you can't even control it
that and the Y- wing has a huge emphasis on being a bomber ship primarily, so it's weighed down, and has a really fucking good sheied to compensate
