Hi Alexi. I heard about this culture from my daughter. She was traumatized after her first experience because in our culture it is taboo to get naked in "public". She got used to it and now enjoys it😅. That is now on my bucket list for my visit

Also, while in sauna, try to keep your speaking voice moderate since many people go to sauna to relax, even meditate.

Beautiful introduction to sauna usage! With my own experience of using both Finnish sauna and it's closest neighbor - a bit more hard Russian sauna/bath ("banja") of more than 40 years, I would add two pieces of advice: when you entered sauna, it's really wise to place your feet at the level of your butt for at least first five minutes - this will help to avoid problems with blood circulation in upper and lower parts of your body that otherwise will be caused by temperature difference, and - for most people it's better to wear a sauna hat to protect the head from overwarming. And enjoy that great invention, a Finnish sauna! ))

Just pour water on yourself/take a shower first. Maybe a bald person would benefit by wearing a wet one.

Kiitos! As a German sauna culture isn't as common and frequent as it is in Finland, but it's very much the same. In Germany you often have to be naked (rules forbid to wear swimwear or other clothes). And mixest public saunas are very normal here.

I stayed in a 5 star hotel in Germany and they had a warning sign that people will be naked in the Sauna. Being a Finn I was cool with that and spoke to the Germans in Sauna - we had a good laugh about other cultures that are shocked by it.

I think there are some differences in using the sauna. German saunas are very quiet, but in larger sauna facilities there is often a special sauna where it is allowed to talk.
In the larger facilities, the infusion (the löyly stuff) is carried out by the sauna master, usually on the hour. He brings with him a bucket of water filled with scented oils. This is poured onto the hot stones in 3-4 rounds and in between he distributes the steam by spreading it with a towel or fan in the sauna. It gets particularly hot when you're waved directly. Then it's off to a cold shower or plunge pool.

Why can't people separate nakedness and sex? I love how Fins are so progressive way before anyone else. PLUS I totally agree... People are oddly more friendly when they are naked.

Agreed. I'm a social nudist and it's endlessly annoying the way so many people conflate nudity and sex. I live in a large metro area so I have a lot of nudist options but traffic and poor transit make them over an hour away.😡
I've been to Iceland, Denmark, & Sweden. All three were too brief but I now realize I should've been born in one of the Nordic countries.

Just a tip: finnish tap water is one of the cleanest in the world maybe, but our tap water too has chlorine. And if you think chlorine is not bad for you, try eating 500 grams or a pound of chlorine powder in one go. You may very well die or at least, your excrement will be quite.. different. Chlorine is anti-bacterial, that why they use it on water here, and guess what's in your intestines where the food you eat ends? Bacteria, good and bad bacteria, some that turn the food you eat to good stuff your body uses for energy.
I've trained my taste buds to taste different waters, and I spot the differences, quite easily actually. Tap water here is worse tasting than commercial natural spring waters sold on the market, especially the good ones like Borjomi and Evian, and maybe Pellegrino. Pirkka spring water is ok I guess, and Polar Spring spring water is nice too, but not as ogod as the better ones.
How to train your taste buds: eat only the best foods for you. That means wild foods, fresh foods or well-preserved foods like fermented or maybe graavi (salt-preserved) meats. Organic food is second best. Then is the GMO-free Snellman meats. Then is normal meats. Then is processed meats. Then is McDonalds burger meats. They're the least good for you. It doesn't break your budget here even if you're on a low-pay job or some kinda decent pension or such, to eat high quality foods like organic or wild fish like Järki Särki maybe, because unlike in USA where they rob you silly for proper organic food and most of their organic label foods are not EU-grade organic by far, far from it, much worse. We finnish folks do that right. And, if you don't wanna spend so much money on food, learn how to fast. Jason Fung can help you with that, I think, heard he's the leading expert on fasting. I've done 3-day water fast with good Evian and Borjomi mainly for three days, it's important to have decent water with some good quality sea salt in it if it's not Borjomi grade minerals from nature there. Because body needs more than just H2O in water, and all water is far from equal.
You WILL notice this if you train your taste buds a bit. Maybe even if you don't, if you know a bit about how to train your senses.
I know I should stop writing long comments when no one's interested anyhow... your loss really :) I like writing these anyhow, just feeling like it. Maybe you read this and actually give what I say a chance to be true in your sense of reality, it'd make your life much better I'd say. Good food is one main ingredient of good health and happiness.
    Mikko

The lenses steam up in sauna so if you forgot, you would remember then. And anyway, it's traditionally a rather dim lighting in the sauna. Just as long as you know where the kiuas (don't burn yourself), the bench and the door are that's all you need really.

Suomalainen kylppäri ilman saunaa on kuin auto ilman moottoria, perkele! In Finland I can’t survive without a sauna… 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
