One of the happiest memories of my life (so far) was being in a Finnish sauna with my eight year old son at a mökki by a lake not far from Punkaharju. After a while my brain just started to slow down and the little window looking out onto the lake through the pine trees was like a moving picture. Then going outside feeling the breeze against my body and then swimming in the lake. The water felt tingly rather than cold. All you could hear was the sound of the breeze, the trees, the water and the birds. Then a family of ducks just swam right between us as though we weren't there. And the light of the sun through the trees across the water was so beautiful. And best of all was my little boy's permanent grin. And I'm not going to lie, the fact we were both naked was actually an important part of it because it made me feel we were actually a part of the nature around us. Totally connected to it not just observing it. And as we don't usually walk around naked it was also stepping out of everyday life and throwing aside everyday rules. Later on, after a few more saunas, dips and showers, feeling cleaner than we'd ever felt we built a fire and cooked food ... and I drank some cold beer. I absolutely get why the Finns feel so content. Edit - for context. I'm English, married with two kids and live in a big northern city. I love Finland and we've now had eight holidays in Finnish lakeside cabins (mökki).
Sauna is the thing. My doughters friend from swedish/frenc parents wouldn't come to sauna with us last year. This summer she got the the jist. She swimmed naked for the fist time in her life and felt great. There is nothing sexual about sauna. It is a place to relax and wash.
@@sahilpatoliya8306 But why study in Finland?! If you are from a warm country, you will probably get sick in body and psyche. Except a few months the weather is freezing and dark.
Great job in the video! I was laughing when you told us Finns wait for the pause in conversations; If you ever came to one of my family gatherings, you would NEVER get the chance to speak!! Hahahahah!! Don't feel bad, many Americans would have the same problem!! DD
Finland sounds like my kind of place. I'm very comfortable with silent pauses. I don't usually feel the need to fill those quiet moments with sound for sound's sake.
She said something that I've thought for a while. Being used to seeing ordinary people naked IS a good thing. I went to school in the UK in the late 60s to mid 70s when at least males (can't speak for women) were used to getting changed and showered together with no big fuss. It definitely wasn't thought of as sexual. In fact, wanting privacy was seen as being a bit unmanly. So I grew up seeing 'normal' average bodies of all types so we had no unrealistic expectations of what you're supposed to look like. Nowadays, everyone wants their privacy and you even see young guys in male changing rooms getting changed under a towel as though they were on a public beach or just avoiding the changing rooms completely. Trouble is they DO still see naked people, in fact more than I ever did, but not in realistic situations but on the internet and those people they see are usually body perfect and posing for film or photos. Hence, body anxiety, unrealistic expectations and worry about self-image is a bigger thing for the younger generation than it ever was for mine.
I'm a naturist( 54yrs) bloke, on naturist beaches in general you only see older males and females nude, not alot of younger people which is a bit sad, ( they do visit clubs in the own age group or families),; one time this young lad had his shorts on but his mum was nude,. But another time I chatted to a family were there young daughter was clothed,I was nude, she was just talking to me ( no worries about me nude,) like she understood nudity, families should support all young people to become naturists from early age cos it will benefit them when older
I am living in Finland for more than a decade and still learned some new cultural things from your video! I always enjoy your videos and now I enjoyed this one even more!
Have to say that you had a great finnish guide. She could explain some things so well that even i (A Finn) first time understood how differently we communicate and use silence.
Great video filled with real info. I remember very well meeting my future wife in the 1990’s and learning to accept the WONDERFUL FINNISH CULTURE. Pauses in conversations, sauna culture, pace of life and summer experiences lakeside simply RELAXING and ENJOYING life are things I hold dear to my heart. My daughter and I return to Finland often and can feel when we’ve been away too long! Sisu is real!
I remember seeing a tourist welcome sign one year in Finland that said "Welcome to Finland, it's the middle of October, and you still came to see us you badass you."
This "slow pace" in a conversation and "waiting for a pause" as described around 3:34 is also common for people with hearing impairment. They can no longer acoustically distinguish overlapping conversations. Therefore, one does not talk into a hearing impaired person. And as a hearing impaired person one needs a little bit more time to decipher something just heard, hence the pause. Otherwise frustration arises, see "Dinner Table Syndrome". Being hard of hearing myself, the Nordic style of conversation suits me very well.
I think Germany has a stronger nudity culture than Finland. In Finland, nude beaches and parks are not at all as common as in Germany. Germany also has more co-ed saunas, while public saunas in Finland tend to be separated by gender. I would say that in Finland we don't care if someone is naked or not (in the appropriate settings), while the German culture has more of an element of emphasizing nudity, i.e. freikörperkultur.
We have gender saunas now because of today's feminists and the fear women have towards us evil men. There's mixed saunas still but fewer every year. As young there was mixed saunas everywhere. Nude on a beach is forbidden today too, you are a perv and if some child sees you naked then the child's life will be ruined so even the small ones have bathing suits thanks to the mothers, go feminism. Its insanity today how much activism has affected our culture, but there are places left that haven't been affected. The ones talking in this video remembers a world we used to live in but haven't existed for years(maybe exists in their circle). Last time Finland was like they picture it was about 10-15 years ago and now they keep hold of that idea of it still being that.
Way to go blaming all of these things on "feminism" and not things like the access to internet and international media. Feminism in of itself isn't some weird big bad it's the 3rd wave super vocal minority that you have a problem with.
@@Joromonni Todays feminism, its not the same as the one my mother taught me or the history we learned in school. It's not even feminism but they disguise it as that. Yes its the influencers on the internet, but still they say "I'm a feminist" when they should come up with a new word of what they are. I also thought first that it was a minority can't convince you to change your view and I can only go by my own experience. All I can say that I see it everywhere today and I think tiktok is the thing spreading it like the plague. Instagram, FB and probably youtube too. I didn't care about it before I got personally affected by it ~10 years ago, when the media influence changed the person that I held dear. When the one beside you goes from the most beautiful down to earth person you have met to a superficial ugly rotten person. I see it in todays kids, I see it in the dating life 9/10 and if that 10th ain't a match its all over again. You see it in bars like in what world do 2 younger than 20 year olds hit on a 40+ year old, in a world they start with "what do you do for a living". If those would be my children I would be ashamed. Maybe I'm just too old school and still see long lasting relationships as the standard of how things should be. I do have problem with the gym culture that makes people consume more to get some superficial things. Girls covering themself up so much that you don't even know who they are under the layers of makeup, when the point of it was to improve your features not change them. Wait and see, soon we have men competing with the women here too and you being homophobic for not wanting to learn 100 names of sexual identities. We already have the racist card like I had an African guy complaining to me about the police being afraid to help him when another group of African people were stealing stuff from him. At work a African guy tries to call it racism when none of the foreigners were given the promotion when it was because they weren't able to speak our language and most of em were too young and lazy. Edit: My mother is a feminist, she has fought for better pay for women most of her life. Today's women that call themselves feminists and tries to get privileges insults the legacy of the true feminists. That's why I feel anger because they insult my mother with what they are doing for selfish reasons. Only other women can root them out so start rooting out your rotten apples because their voice is louder than yours.
Came to comment the same thing: Germans are in a league of their own about nudity and it's so nice to be able to hang out in spas with everyone whereas in Finland it separates half of the company in separate areas.
"Why yes, don't you know we reserved introverts like to engage in uncommunicative, emotionless sex with complete strangers and not engage in all of this... Human EMOTION while satisfying our animal urges? Why, what are you talking about having some kind of r****g problem?.. Can't you read our nonverbal, eyecontact avoiding, uncommunicative cultural cues based on subtle body postures and social space usage on when you go on into these sexual situations and thus give your consent?..." - some finn, maybe ); )
@@bambi42 Exaaaactly! : D Think about how easy it is for introverts! Just animal grunts, good physical excercise, maybe focusing on the physical bodypart that interest in the other person the most and ignore all that personality and gawd awful socialization. Plus, it's a great way for them to relieve stress and tension from all that _awkward_ social contact they've been forced to, however shortly, endure. lD
I was impressed that the country was very clean with no trash anywhere. Quite expensive unless you are from NYC or Boston and our hotel had the best breakfast buffet ever. Breakfast for a king or queen. Beautiful blonds everywhere in Helsinki.
A woman told us a story once about Thunder Bay, Canada - a city with many ethnic Finns. It was a warm day in early spring so she and another lady decided to go cross country skiing naked in the woods. They turned a corner in the trail and were embarrassed to meet an old Finnish couple skiing in the opposite direction. The man looked them up and down and then asked "So, what kind of wax do you use?"
I enjoyed this video sooo much ❤ it was definitely nice to see opinions not just from Finnish content creators but also people in bars and markets ☺️ and the sauna in burger king and in the Ferris wheel really surprised me 😯
I'm blown away. I have spent years traveling in Europe, but never the Baltic states. How wonderfully refreshing. Thanks to this post I may have found my new home. Thank you.
American, and fascinated by other cultures. Always been curious about Finland, Sweden, Russia. Thanks so much for the video. The silence and finishing and starting conversations is so interesting. Thanks again for the video....
I have travelled extensively but have never been to Finland. My Wife and I won’t have much time for the sauna but time for the visit has made our Bucket List. This was really an enjoyable video. Thank you.
Even without the 3 months of darkness. I remember waiting for spring, in the 8 years I spent in Switzerland , for the people to open up again. I was living in Zuri, Bern and Nuolen. It was the same every year. The majority of people become very introverted and sad like in winter. Grumpy even. Then suddenly after a week of warm weather or so people start looking into each others faces again. The smiles get easier... Those that can...
Very nice production. Just letting the Fins talk worked so well. ❤Everybody in here is obviously comfortable with themselves. Brilliant idea, that there might be a correlation with self-reliance and the practice of activities done while being nude.
Wow that was really interesting. Saunas everywhere and that makes sense, when I was in St. Petersburg 5 years ago a group of Finnish students were extremely quiet in the hotel lobby for an hour. Why us Americans were just chatting it up. I really like these Singles Guide videos. Strangely there about countries or near countries I'm going to over the next year. I can't wait for some Baltic videos. I'm going to Latvia and would love some You Know Your Dating videos on the 3 countries or just some general culture/socializing tips. Keep up the great work!
I used to visit Helsinki a lot, staying right by the harbour in a building that's in the background of many of your shots. I was always convinced that the Finns should be the world's greatest pojker players. Even the simplest business conversation would seemingly grind to a halt with long, long silences that my American colleagues found very awkward. In many cases the silence would eventually be broken by the Finn making a profound and well thought out statement. The noisy posturing of my colleagues was just an obstacle that the Finns had to overcome
All I know about Finland is the cutest chick on the planet was at a museum in Tampere , And clearly a old school Star Trek fan... Bloody Hell she was gorgeous
I was in Finland some 20 years ago and I loved it. I found the people to be very warm, but I'm an outgoing person who is an extrovert so it wasn't hard to start conversations

During the Cold War, our president used to hold many of his meetings in a sauna. Partly because he liked to sauna (yes it is also a verb), partly because spy-gadgets of the time could not stand hot and humid conditions and partly because it gave him an edge against more prudish diplomats (doesn't work against Russians). Many politicians had similar ways to make the opposite side distracted, such as Churchill putting pins in his Cigars so the ash would not fall. This is also why many Mafia-movies etc. have a meetings a turkish-bath. Everybody can see that the others have no wires etc.
As an older, married, American citizen, I found the vid very appealing. Makes us want to ask " Would we be happier, someplace else" - even though we love America?
Finns are fascinating people. They have a symbiosis with the landscape. Quiet, until you get to know them. Their vibrant folk music, especially kantele tunes, show their tenacity and wisdom. They have plenty of chutzpah.
I have been to two places in the world with extremely wonderful sun light. First is Madagascar. The second was in Helsinki at noon in January. Just fantastic. It is NOT dark all the time in Helsinki in Winter.
that sauna ferris wheel is a great idea, my first sauna was about 12? 11 maybe? homemade sorta, bent over branches stuck into the ground to dorma dome, I couldn't quite stand up in it, covered it in blacks visqueen, then we gathered large 6" diameter river rock about a dozen, started a fire, got them all real hot, bored holes in a metal 5 gallon bucket with handle, burnt it well in teh fire, put rocks in bucket, carry into hut, pour water over it, worked very well, we used it for years.. i'll never forget the one winter no one checked the river we used to jump into, (pilchuck) so we sauna, go to jump in and it's about 4ft over flood stage, all brown.. we jumped in any ways ye have to get in before you cool off while your still steamin hot.. good times, I Love hot springs and saunas
Really enjoyed the video. Excellent to see and hear how norms are around the world. One place must be completely covered, another it’s not in the visual sense but thoughts. Being open and comfortable is sure refreshing. I wished I had visited there on my last trip.

It may seem there's silence in the conversation but actually it's full of observing and sensing non-verbal messages. Also, I think many many Finns find their relationships from bars/nightclubs while drunk. All of my relationships started that way and almost everyone I know started their relationships that way.
What you describe was not my experience in Finland , not even close. I found the Fins open, and a joy to be around. I had great times in the nightclubs, at parties and festivals. The people of Helsinki were helpful, obliging and very friendly whether male or female. What you describe might be a Millennial thing. I found Americans to be one of the most prudish people in the world. Especially when it comes to bathrooms, toilets, sauna's, and change rooms. Europeans in general are anything but prudish no matter what country in Europe you are in.
surprisingly, finnish and japanese culture(s) have many similarities :) as far as the awkward bill paying at restaurants or bars, in my family, the oldest adult male pays for all if there are 6 persons or less. If the adult male invited you, he pays all. On a date within my circle, the male always pays...rare exceptions: the male may be a struggling writer or musician and his date is a doctor or rich heiress... i agree - much happiness in finland until brutal winter comes...
Listening to the conversation around the 2:30 mark I'm thinking... am I descended from Finland or something? This is literally me in every conversation. Just waiting for the pause to be able to speak. Then whenever they do stop, I've forgotten what I was thinking before because they took an eternity to wrap it up. Born and raised in Texas, U.S. btw. Maybe I should go for a visit sometime!
Yea it's one of the annoying things I gotta explain to friends online that how it isn't bad to see others naked, but they keep thinking it's crazy... I go many times a week to sauna with my family and walk daily naked in my house.
I've been living in Finland for a while, and one of the strategies, at least among university students, is to ask to go for a sauna. It surprisingly works 😂. Btw, really good videos!! I love them both. 😁Thank you, Marina, ❤
My mom was born in Finland and came to Canada as a 12 yr. old. Half the family was from there. I remember as a little kid going into the sauna, a twice weekly occurrence, with other family members both men and women naked. No big deal unless you want to make it one.
I recently went on holiday to Croatia and there were a lot of Fins at the hotel, they were so smiley and chatty and it went against everything I knew about finish people. 😂 I think I’d like the culture and the silences , we all talk to much in England 😅
@@tallisinwonderland4724 Now that is an unusual observation....not many pretty people nor ugly from my 80+/- visits. The only really pretty women I have ever seen there were two twins who were on a summer exchange work exchange and were of Slavic blood.
What a fantastic video! Can't wait to visit and I'm going this summer in July. I'm someone who can talk the paint of a wall, and after 20 years in LA, I moved to the US Northeast, where people don't chit-chat lol. I'm going to check into my hotel and then stand out front with a t-shirt that says "jutustelu" - €5. I know I'll meet someone, and will let you know how it goes!!! I do have some clients in Finland, so I know there's a resonance. Great channel, dude!
Seeing family naked is absolutely normal in Brazil. I am 21 years old and there's no shock in seeing my mother or grandparents naked, or vice versa. I thought it was the same worldwide.
Sauna culture also varies. For me it would not be normal to go to sauna with opposite sex (family members or otherwise). Exception being couples and their small children that might have a turn of their own.
Another excellent video. Great details about the Finnish sauna's and communication styles. Proved true when I was over there for a bit of time. 7:46 Finnish moment in action. Varpu was stunned for a second and genuinely tried to help out. The idea of needing to ask for help in Finnish culture and not butting in. How do you find these people? Are the ladies themselves usually single?
Thank you! It depends - Varpu is an influencer in Finland, while the girls at the cafe I stumbled upon accidentally (she was just working there when we were filming). Whether they are single or not, it really depends.
As long as I learn more about british, I find they more related to latin than to germanic culture. For instance, english structure is germanic, but definitely its vocabulary have more latin and greek background than germanic. And that conversational culture is more latin as well.
My wife and her family are from Finland, and it is just as the video stated. My wife wouldn't hold hands with me on the first date, but everyone gets naked in the Sauna. Being an American in America, I hate their customs, but I love my wife.44 yrs now and still deeply in love.
Happy Friday, Marina 🌹! Have a great time in Finland 🇫🇮 and enjoy the beach, the lifestyle, and you're almost close to home (Russia 🇷🇺). Sending my love from Miami, Florida, USA 🇺🇲
Is finland the nordic country that is the most like that? (for the silence thing) Cause i hear people saying that pretty much all nordic countries are like that but when I've been to Copenhagen it didn't feel people didn't want to talk to me, there where stranger on the street who would change some words casually I've never been to any other nordic country or even city, but i know an icelandic guy (who lives in London since a lot tho) and he was really extrovert
So that means they are introvert people pretty much? Well I am the same but wouldn't it be boring? Someone said that it is easy to hook up for casual sex but hard to build up relationship in Finland; is it true?
Thanks for a good video. I tried to date a Finnish girl so I can relate more to this video and it is really good. It teached me so much.. I believe I will get to know Finland some day. Me thinks this sauna thing is something. One cannot flirt in the sauna. Very good video.
Imagine not having people incessantly babbling on, rather, only speaking with something relevant to say and saying so, concisely and precisely. A society that relishes silence. It sounds like paradise - the sound of silence, that is. Where has Finland been my entire life?
I think atleast for me 21m finnish male that paying for potential date can be quite an akward thing because it can lead to expectations. I´m willing to pay after we have met couple times and it feels like its going somewhere. It would also be lovely if it went like in the video that you buy the rounds 50/50

Trouble is they DO still see naked people, in fact more than I ever did, but not in realistic situations but on the internet and those people they see are usually body perfect and posing for film or photos. Hence, body anxiety, unrealistic expectations and worry about self-image is a bigger thing for the younger generation than it ever was for mine.

smartphones didn't exist in the 60s and 70s. The slightest indiscretion could potentially be filmed and used against you.
I worked in gold mines, where about 75 miners come to surface at once. Everybody showers together in one big shower room.

I think Finns are very polite and presentable.
Nice word. Freiky by name freaky by nature ;)
Finland: "We're very sexually open ... but don't talk to us."
Well, that's not helpful whatsoever. 😂
"Why yes, don't you know we reserved introverts like to engage in uncommunicative, emotionless sex with complete strangers and not engage in all of this... Human EMOTION while satisfying our animal urges? Why, what are you talking about having some kind of r****g problem?.. Can't you read our nonverbal, eyecontact avoiding, uncommunicative cultural cues based on subtle body postures and social space usage on when you go on into these sexual situations and thus give your consent?..."
- some finn, maybe ); )
You don't need to talk that much while having sex :D
There's the stories people tell to themselves and then the reality.. 😄
@@bambi42 Exaaaactly! : D Think about how easy it is for introverts! Just animal grunts, good physical excercise, maybe focusing on the physical bodypart that interest in the other person the most and ignore all that personality and gawd awful socialization. Plus, it's a great way for them to relieve stress and tension from all that _awkward_ social contact they've been forced to, however shortly, endure. lD
@@Art-kz6zf Yeah, that is true. But never let a good chance to make a joke pass by. ^^
Cool story.😆
I enjoyed this video sooo much ❤ it was definitely nice to see opinions not just from Finnish content creators but also people in bars and markets ☺️ and the sauna in burger king and in the Ferris wheel really surprised me 😯
I think introverts of every "loud culture" would like it here. Also finns definitely seem more affable and warm than swedes, so that's a plus as well.
Love this… my mom is Finnish and traveling there often I can attest the dating seen is much more relaxed then in the states
Finland shares border with Norway also!
All I know about Finland is the cutest chick on the planet was at a museum in Tampere , And clearly a old school Star Trek fan... Bloody Hell she was gorgeous
Well living in NYC for years I can never get my date to shut up, so Finland sounds like a welcome change.
I was in Finland some 20 years ago and I loved it. I found the people to be very warm, but I'm an outgoing person who is an extrovert so it wasn't hard to start conversations
As a UK citizen living in estonia I still get mortified about the idea of encountering naked people in saunas 😂
So you dont know what sauna really is.

Love this style of video Marina, thank you ;). It gives an insight into the culture
I have been to two places in the world with extremely wonderful sun light. First is Madagascar. The second was in Helsinki at noon in January. Just fantastic. It is NOT dark all the time in Helsinki in Winter.
Helsinki is far south of the country. In Lapland it's dark almost the entire day during winter.
Love that they are this way. It's a Reason to Get up in Morning....
The way America acts towards nudity is really weird. We do nothing about rapist but a woman barely dressed or nude they lose their minds.
Exactly!
You can add Norway as a neighbor with a land border in the northernmost part of Finland
Yeah, not only could she do it. She must do it! Finland and Norway both have 3 neighboring countries. They border each other + Sweden and Russia.
Loved that you finally focused on Finland! Maybe one day you’ll get to do a dating a Finnish guy episode!
Another enjoyable long format Marina.
that sauna ferris wheel is a great idea, my first sauna was about 12? 11 maybe? homemade sorta, bent over branches stuck into the ground to dorma dome, I couldn't quite stand up in it, covered it in blacks visqueen, then we gathered large 6" diameter river rock about a dozen, started a fire, got them all real hot, bored holes in a metal 5 gallon bucket with handle, burnt it well in teh fire, put rocks in bucket, carry into hut, pour water over it, worked very well, we used it for years.. i'll never forget the one winter no one checked the river we used to jump into, (pilchuck) so we sauna, go to jump in and it's about 4ft over flood stage, all brown.. we jumped in any ways ye have to get in before you cool off while your still steamin hot.. good times, I Love hot springs and saunas
Germany seems to be relaxed with nudity in Sauna, they are also mixed there. Everyone speaks english so well there
Really enjoyed the video. Excellent to see and hear how norms are around the world. One place must be completely covered, another it’s not in the visual sense but thoughts. Being open and comfortable is sure refreshing. I wished I had visited there on my last trip.

Finns are happy in their own skins.
It may seem there's silence in the conversation but actually it's full of observing and sensing non-verbal messages. Also, I think many many Finns find their relationships from bars/nightclubs while drunk. All of my relationships started that way and almost everyone I know started their relationships that way.
It was an informative video which tempted me to visit Finland along with my wife. She will be so happy with me.
I highly recommend for you guys to visit Finland. It’s a great country. Guys go to Lapland in the winter or come to Helsinki in the summer. 🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
Ofcourse finnish people are joyful if you meet them in nightclub, parties or festivals. They are drunk :D

surprisingly, finnish and japanese culture(s) have many similarities :) as far as the awkward bill paying at restaurants or bars, in my family, the oldest adult male pays for all if there are 6 persons or less. If the adult male invited you, he pays all.
On a date within my circle, the male always pays...rare exceptions: the male may be a struggling writer or musician and his date is a doctor or rich heiress...

Yes, going nude in house, garden, beaches and clubs, embrace it ,it nature, we are naturists

As long as I learn more about british, I find they more related to latin than to germanic culture. For instance, english structure is germanic, but definitely its vocabulary have more latin and greek background than germanic. And that conversational culture is more latin as well.
