Dr. Master Matt... All I can even begin to offer is thank you. If you had told me the GD edge was the best I could hope for I would never have enjoyed my first comfortable straight razor shave... or the 5 that followed!!! Amazing skill, determination, and generosity Sir. I look forward to finding my very own and sending it off to you for some “juiced” edges!! I am humbled and I thank you
Brown Man Shaves - I appreciate your gratitude Kyle. I enjoy a challenge and you certainly were one. But now we’re both more knowledgeable and I thank you for the opportunity. All in a days work!😏
Another great video. I love watching you shave while you chat to me. I'm learning from watching your technique, whilst at the same time you're giving so many gems of information. Thank you!
Very nice, as always Matt! Look for my razors around Thur, Fri. I'll email or call you buddy! Nice commentary too!! I agree, that steel Matters! The metallurgical components MATTER!!!! I believe i suffer from what that gentleman does too! Being Italian, my beard is sooooo dense!
This was like a mystery/drama short w/a happy ending....well almost. He still needs a "big boy 2 wheeler" of his own. 😉 What a blast watching it all unfold. Great work Sherlock.
Ole buddy, that shave cloth is an amazing idea! I gave it a try, in certain spots that seems hard to get a good stretch. Im sure your material is much better. I had an old long-Jon thermal type shirt and I cut off one of the sleeves about 10" long and my mom to sew one end closed - works great! Thanks for coming up with that idea buddy! I don't like to use alum during the shave - that stuff can a will rust razor, its a salt.
Hello sir what similar razor that the other gentle man was using that worked for him? I have a similar beard like him and I am looking for one like it that's affordable. I would really appreciate a response.
Yes, those would definitely work. Most of the Japanese razors I've seen are extra hollow like the Parker 510s. I do know there are some heavier grinds tho. They're probably older and a bit harder to find.
Yes they are...Just got the TOOBS Sandalwood Cream, my goodness it was a smooth relaxing 1st time shave with my Bergischer Lowe, and Omega 6215 Super Badger just an awesome shave tonight. Thanks for the video.
Very nice Dr. Matt. I figured that he would be one of those that would require an ultra sharp edge in combination with a heavier grind. I also noticed that the heavier ground razor had an extremely nice polish to it. I don't know if that would help or not though in the glide department.
Do you mean on the hollow part that's shiny? I don't think that would make a difference in glide because it's not or shouldn't be in contact with the skin.
That's kindlly what I meant. But yeah I don't really think that would either except in the asthetic department. I wonder if a polished edge would help?
Great vid doc love the sound effects my personal take is maybe that gent should have a better pre shave tough beard like that some pre shave oil then steam it up with a hit towel cheers
I hadn't heard that the old Sheffield steel was softer. Interesting. I've got some heavier grind razors I just haven't gotten to honing yet. Need to give one a go.
Dr Matt i have a gold dollar i got from Anthony and i cant get it to shave after 3 uses and on the second use i could tell it was duller that the first shave. I love strait razor shaving but not if i have to hone every three shaves.
Only tried a shavete, a feather kamisori and it just did not work for me, I tried it with several different blades but even feather pro seemed dull. Unfortunately I suffer from arthritis in my hands and that rules out a full shave with a straight. I do enjoy using DE's and SE's, especially the Ever Ready 1912 gem style. I was hoping to get a reasonable shave with the shavette then try a real straight. Looks like I will have to stick with safety razors.
Dr Matt, great videos. I also seem to have an impossible beard. I have tried two restored and honed vintage razors, one hollow and one cleaver type, with poor results. I also tried a new Ralf Aust 6/8 Spanish Point, also with poor results. The thicker razors pulled less, but did not cut close. The hollow sung like that razor Brown Man used and pulled like something fierce. So it was back to DE for me. You video gave me hope, however. I'd like to try again some point in the future. What are the specs in terms of size and grind for your Brian Brown? Thanks!
Ryall Meyer - The BB spec that matters is the quarter hollow aspect. If you can find a Hart razor in 6/8 or even better, a 7/8; they’ll work. They’re a US based company that has gone through some changes but the steel is still really good after a few fixes have been done. If you happen to acquire one, get back in touch with me.
DrMatt357 I have a thick beard and I have the same problem with shavettes where I get skipping. I want to try straight razors but I am unfamiliar with the term “heavy” grind. I want to buy a good straight off the bat, I am not sure which one to get. I went back to DE and SE razors and by the way a feather blade is only good for one shave for my beard type. I get better results with GEM razors. Would a stainless steel straight razor work for me? I don’t know which hallow is also good.
Been shaving for over a year with a safety and it works but i have been wanting to make the switch to a straight. But through all the mess of what grind people recomend and the length and width i still have no clue where to start. What razor and or kit would you recomend. Btw absolutely love the videos.
Daniel Funcheon - Thank you Dan. It can be overwhelming. Size and shape won’t really matter. I would suggest starting with a good shaving, inexpensive razor. Gold Dollars are a pretty good choice here. Need a strop and 2 stones to maintain the edge. Feel free to email me if you need more info. drmatt357 @hotmail.com
Hey Dr. Matt. Do you think the smiling blade on that Brown razor helped get through his beard at all or do you think the main variables are the grind and edge?
Good question Jeremy. I don't think the smile has much to do with the cutting ability but could make it easier to get into the recessed areas like under the lower lip. I think the main variable here is the steel quality and how it was hardened. I've had very good steel that wasn't hardened properly and it wasn't worth a damn.
Jason Siks - The way the razor is ground. Some are real thin and some thicker. This affects they way it shaves and feels. No better one, just different.
I can't get my head round the differences in razors. TIs just don't do it for me, it's like trying to shave a wire brush. Tried a DOVO and that bad-boi was just like scraping the lather from my face. I thought it must be just the razor, so tried another DOVO and the same thing, straight through.
You need to have a control edge, one that you know is proper and compare that to others you want to test. If those were factory edges you tried on the TI and Dovo, that wouldn't count.
Awesome video Dr. Matt 😌👏 If anybody wants any clear evidence that not all steels are the same, I think we have it here. I’m sure that you shall see plenty of replies from those who believe that the hardness of the steel is irrelevant using the proven scientific approaches of repeating themselves and shouting 😌👍
@@drmatt357 Ok I'm there. I am fairly familiar with sharpening my high carbon, Solingen by Boker knifes and 1095 steels of esee. I use a coticule snd have diamonds ceramics...etc. This leads me to buy a Boker for my first. What would you suggest as I can only say I am 60 and have a medium stiff facial hair. I'm guessing on medium. I also sent you an email. Thanks!
It’s one shave Big Man! We do it that way because we only have one blade instead of three, four or five stuffed into a plastic cartridge. We also do each “pass” in a different direction to better attack the whisker and get as smooth of a shave as possible.
DrMatt357 you know i never knew that and im gonna give it a try now, ive always only shaved once, safety and straight razors seem to cut closer on the first pass and i only ever make one!

GD gives you nice shave if honed properly no seconds opinion about it but you tell me that it's feel as good as TI no way. It's like DE razor all DE razor take same DE blades og gives you nice close shave but they feel and shave differently. I can go AGT with some straight razor but not with other even shaved with same soap/ brush. You find "I know everything experts on both sides". One tell you razors like GD is totally rubbish and other will tell that GD is just like any expensive razor like TI

Hello sir what similar razor that the other gentle man was using that worked for him? I have a similar beard like him and I am looking for one like it that's affordable. I would really appreciate a response.
Hart Razors. I did a video on them.
Japanese vintage razor with a heavier grind should work well and those can be found for affordable prices too.
