It's not the video quality... that's just how I look. Ya know, I went to the shrink the other day and he said I was crazy. I told him I wanted a second opinion. So he says, OK, you're ugly too!
My 75 yr-old face has creases, valleys and bumps in it that used not to be there, creating challenges. But I still get my closest shaves with a straight.. Oddly, some of the best shaves I get are from very old blades like the IXL. Dr. Matt has worked on a couple of them which make them shave like a dream... The only real honing I do is with a 12K grit stone and nice stropping. That usually lasts a long time. If the blades need more than that, I usually send them in... Watching Dr. Matt and some of the others have helped me a great deal. The rest of it is improvising and learning the curvature of my face. Thank you, Dr. Matt for the instruction you have given me along with the individual attention.
I started using a straight razor mainly because from an eco friendly perspective I wanted something that would reduce my plastic waste and is a reusable option. For shaving my head I use a safety razor so even then it is less plastic waste than a cartridge razor. I do use a gold dollar simply because as my first straight razor I wanted to make sure it would work for my face before investing in a more expensive razor but that one is working out well for me.
Your movements are so smooth and precise. I just got a straight razor and got a couple nicks the first time I used it, but it was an amazing experience. I'll keep at it.
If you only got a couple of nicks your first time, that's pretty good. Keep the spine close to your face and light pressure. Have a plan. Which side first, what hand for each side, section it off, when do you rinse... all that stuff. Takes a year to get decent.
When my wife walks in during one of my straight shaves, I hold the blade at least 8" away from my face before I respond to her. (But usually she doesn't interfere, not because I asked her not to, but because she's scared she might make me cut myself. Then, I shave the back of her neck with one which she claims to enjoy).
I agree, they are so much smoother than disposable razors, and I get a higher satisfaction out of my shave knowing I honed that edge on a natural stone
One of these days I'm going to send you a razor and compare my edges to yours and see how I'm doing. Still perfecting my craft but alot of it is being influenced by your recommendations. I appreciate it.
My whiskers are like wire too. Technique, multiple passes to mow them down and a keen edge of course. Nothing compares to the closeness of a straight in my opinion.
Try the Merkur Futur Adjustable with a Feather blade at stage 6. Many people who say that a straight gives you a closer shave than a safety never used an aggressive safety such as the Merkur Futur or the Muehle R41 because the vast majority of safeties are mild.
@@starlodear2987 Yeah, I've got a Mukur slant which gives you a super close shave but I've gotten some nasty cuts using it. I think that using a straight keeps you a bit more honest since you really have to pay attention to what your doing. Same goes for that slant.
I just purchased my first straight razor I've been using a shavette 7 years and have found its not as sharp as the shavette as well, but the sound and feel are awsome. I've seen your honing vids will keep working on the straight razor to see if it can get sharper same problem thick beard.
It is possible and it is not necessarily due to the "size" of the hair. My beard grows along my skin and comes out in an angle. For the first pass, I need to increase the blade angle to 45 or 50 degree or the blade will mostly glide over the hair. the greater angle brings problems like irritation or cuts. I have used straight honed by different guys that are really good in their craft and the result is mainly the same, irritation and cuts. I am sure that with time, I can figure out a way to do it but I have to take a break between shaves due to the irritation. the most effective pass is across the grain. fairly easy on the face but hard to do on the neck (practice will bring me there at some point. Against the grain cause me some problems as the blade goes under the hair due to the angle of my hair and has a tendency to be pushed against the skin, causing irritation. I am sure it is a matter of finding the right technique and I will at some points. This is why guys like you doing videos like this one is important to let the guys know they are not the only ones and to keep trying different techniques and blades.
I do shave with DE and SE. the angle has to be more then the proverbial 30 degree (for the first pass) but I find it easier to control the pressure with DEs/SEs than straight. Also, the less efficient razors give me a better shave ( has to do with irritation ). I never tried a quality shavette. It is on the list and I probably will acquire one before Christmas. But like the rest, it is mostly technique and I just need to figure it out. Like we like to say, YMMV. Sometimes, people watch our videos and they are too eager to just replicate what we do. When I discovered wet shaving, 11 years ago, it was out of necessity and not because I saw videos (I only discovered the on-line wet shaving community 6 years ago...) therfore I adopted a technique that suited me rather than emulating someone else (well, I went from cartridges to DE, it is quite similar...). Now, Straight shaves might be a different ball game but again, evey beard is different and you need to adjust for what we grow... I am just trying to say for the guys out there for who straight shave doesnt work, try something different. play with the angle a little and see what are the results. Some adjustments may be required, take your time. Not everyone is the same.
I have a super tough beard! What I have learned is that it comes down to technique. Angle and scything action can make a world of difference with thick tough beards. After experience I can now get a fantastic shave with the dullest SR edge.
Karl Parato - Very good point Karl. This is something I more recently figured out. For those that don’t know, when we shave, we are performing what is known as a Push Cut. Like if you tried to cut a tomato pushing the blade straight down. Has to be a very refined edge to do that. A very inefficient method. So we incorporate a slicing action or long ways movement of the edge. Scything strokes while shaving is similar. Very efficient but the problem is, while incorporating long axial movement parallel to the edge of the blade... ON OUR FACE, we exponentially increase the chance of drawing blood. If you can do it Karl, you got some talent!😏
Taylor Freet - They’re alright. Definitely better than Dovo but I’m not a big fan of the modern German Steel. Wacker is the best from what I’ve seen. Theirs Issard is my favorite razor of the new production stuff from a performance aspect.
DrMatt357 Thanks! I've been shaving with a shavette with Feather blades (sharp little bastards) and wanted to invest in a proper razor and IDK, but the King Kutter spoke to me lol.
I like your shaving skill guy! Just got me my first straight razor last week, Amazon recommended, and it comes with 100 Derby blades. Can you recommend a razor for a beginner like me? Superb shave! 😃
Steve Szakacs - That sounds like a shavette Steve if it takes disposable DE blades. The technique using them is pretty much the same as a straight but you have to be very careful, super light contact on your skin or they’ll get you as they’re hyper sharp. Good beginner razor is a vintage one from someone who knows how to properly sharpen them. Even new ones have crummy edges.
Great shave Dr. Matt. I'm betting that a heavier razor with a near or full wedge grind would help him out a lot and it does sound like he needs one of those evil sharp edges as well. I just got through putting a Shobudani Aswedo edge on my straight razors using Keith Johnson's technique so we will see how that goes.
All razors are hollow ground meaning they grind with a wheel on each side that hollows them out to form an apex. Some wheels are real big in diameter which makes the hollow shallow leaving more metal on the blade hence the term "heavy" grind. If you look at it head on, you can see there's a bunch of steel there and it's thick. 3:26. Where as a "full hollow" uses a smaller wheel and the sides are more concave and the entire blade is thinner. They definitely have different feels when shaving and you'll have people on both sides of the of the argument saying their favorite is better than the other.
I much prefer natural stone edges to a synthetic. You have converted me to Coticule edges and I really don't use anything but coticules now. Always on the lookout for interesting new stones... Any recommendations?
👍Great info Matt!! Yeap IMO straight razors are all that!!! This November will be 2 years and I haven't looked back. When I started I had similar results, meaning alot of resistance, but traditional straights are a whole different animal. Everyone that switches from cartridge razors or even De razors to a traditional straight will notice some resistance even from super sharp synthetic honed edges. I believe the reason that commercial blades have such a sharper feel by gliding smoothly is because they are coated and De blades are super thin but not more refined than our straights. That coating fills all the micro serrations, and makes it glide smoothly. Lol I don't think any commercial blade is as highly refined as us guys with OCD and particular with our hand honed blades. I think the problem with newbie traditional straight shavers is the lack of experience, at least it was in my case. I think the resistance comes from the lack of momentom. Meaning one has to begin to move before the razor contacts the face/beard. When one comes to the decision to shave with a straight he or she has to be bull headed and very stubborn. When anybody starts with a straight they are going to get cut, have less than stellar shaves for months, uncomfortable shaves/ resistance, but if one perseveres they will be glad they stuck with it!!
Thanks very good info for beginner like me. I'm defently hooked, but am experiencing Knicks less then perfect edge and poor technique like placement blade on face then moving it. Fear of church probably got me apprehensive of moving before blade is down. Plus doing edge of bottom lip, how in the he double L do you shave down from edge of loop without cut? I just go atg up and on top lip is wtg down.
youre pretty good with that. ive been using straights for 3 years now and only do multiple passes when i have a function to go to.(normally 3 passes). dont need a shave for 2 days after multiple passes but every day if single pass. i want an obsidian blade to try out but impossible to sharpen and we dont have good obsidian for that purpise here
@@drmatt357 actually NOTHING natural or man made compares to fractured glass. glass and obsidian of certian types fractures to the molecular level. a correctly knapped blade of about 3" long(check out some of the knapping videos-truly amazing work) is the sharpest thing known to man but is also rather fragile
Have you ever tried a black jeweler gold testing stone to sharpen u your razor. I tried one and found it to be as good as the best stones a very fine edge.
Do you have a video on a whole starter kit? I want a good razor, the right stones, And a good stropping belt. I want to maintain a razor for the rest of my life and know what I’m doing
OK obviously i’m watching men shave with straight razors because I’m interested in going that route. Although so many choices of razors and price points has got me confused. I’m probably going to order one from Amazon. do you have any suggestions? I am interested in probably a hollow ground that can be strap sharpened.
GONZO38 pp - Hey Uncle Ted, be careful on Amazon as there are a lot of fake razors.A vintage razor on eBay can work at a decent price. A strop will keep the edge “polished” if you will but you’re going to need some stones to sharpen it. I have a recent video on sharpening your first ebay find you may want to check out.
Boy if I shave my face that many times it would fall off 😂. It's probably a mistake but I got a shavette thingy today because I got a straight edge and like you say here it was stopping and wasn't sharp enough or something though I have a ridiculous beard of steel. It pisses me off to no end. Anyway il have to try this thing today but after that il try some of the ones you used today because after 10 years of shaving it's starting to piss me off how rough my beard is yet sensitive my skin is.
When you use the shavette, make sure you use a fairly light contact on your face. If you're used to using a cartridge, you become accustomed to leaning on the blade to get through. Do that with a shavette and it will get you. I have a couple of shavette videos on the channel you can check out. Good luck!
I have a boker classic anthracite and a gold dollar, but never got then sharpened as a shavette with DE. I have a taidea 3000/8000 whetstone, and normally use 8000. Do you think this would be enough to get them good? Maybe I am not doing some right while sharpening.
@@drmatt357 I am watching it, and maybe my stone is not that good (I was already considering that), as you mention on it, but I will give it a try. Have done similar, but without the tape. And I also don´t have a finishing stone.
I definitely still couldn´t get then sharp as a DE, but much better. Taking off full beard, the blade pulls up the beard, hurting a little bit, but in the second pass it goes better. Something that I had already got before is that the Gold Dollar (bought cheaper from China) seams to be better than the boker one, althought the second was more expensive and should have a better material and construction.
What is that your using on your neck in 6:10 into the video, also do u have links on where to buy these different razors? I'm confident with my disposable blade straight razor and want to work up to a solid blade razor
Derrick Meadors - That’s a Thiers Issard razor Derrick. If you can shave with the disposable blade straight or what’s called a shavette, these things are a piece of cake. You will have to learn to sharpen them tho... but that’s where the fun and sense of accomplishment comes in and makes it much more rewarding.
Doug Bear - If I were betting Doug, that’s where my money would be. But, the specs on the TI blade are closer to the shavette blade and we know that works so there could be an upset.
I wonder where I can also get a brian brown I feel line the heavier grind will help with my thicker spots of facial hair I use a dovo forestal currently
I don't think BB is making razors anymore. Koraat makes some heavy grind ones. Check their Model 14 or even the Dr. Matt shorty I'm using in the video. He has a special grind for that razor that is heavier for thick beards. It's the cheapest route for their razors.
hi john here watching a youtube video of a guy useing three of your straight razors called straight razor showdown woundering if you had any straight razors like that for sale
I had a similar problem with my boker full hollow 5/8 carbon steel. I did 4 passes and still didn’t get everything so I had to finish up with my safety razor.
Hey Doc, I know you're working on stropping or the lack thereof but even with the theory you're working on, what's up with stropping less on a blade for a tough beard? As always, great video! Unbelievable you'd loan out your BB! You continue to amaze me.
Good question Justin. My theory is this... and it's just theory. Stropping will microconvex the edge. That softens it and gives it a good feel. But it does slightly increase the bevel angle and for lack of a better term, rounds the end (really doesn't but check my other video or SOS blog) So if I strop minimally, it should be sharper (although harsher) but shavette blades are no prize in this department so that's what I'm thinking.
I just got mine for like one month and I love it. But it start to rust even that after I use it I clean it very well until no water is on it. Idk what to do to not become worse:(
Of course wipe it off very well. I've started using compressed air to blow out the pivot pin area as that's where water seems to get trapped most. But you'll probably need to lube the blade after every use. @@drmatt357 Thank you very much! I just buy it a good hair cutter machine that comes with a bottle of oil. I will use that oil until the product you show me will be in stock again. Nice week!
A straight razor can go through anything. I have a very thick Indian beard (caveman beard) and a straight razor mows it down like it's nothing at all. Needless to say, the straight razors have to be honed properly and the shaving angle has to be within correct limits.
Nice video. I just ordered a shavete from Ebay wanting to get into the straight razor world. Figuring to start from there and appon learning more I may buy a gold dollar and work on that. Just trying to figure out all the other needed supplies and a place to buy them. Any advice?

igotthis - most of the name brand ones are good. Some may take a bit to get sorted but once there, most will give really good shaves. Of the current manufactured, I like the Thiers Issard best.
Absolutely I could John. Here’s a limbk to my video with all the info in the description. Let me know if you have anything else. th-cam.com/video/qiM1i5Z9n0M/w-d-xo.html
juju hu - Yes, don’t buy a Dovo! ... and don’t get Inox, they’re stainless. They don’t take the edge and will still rust. TIs are the best current production.
@@drmatt357 great, thanks. If I was about to go order a custom as yourself(my facial hair is pretty strong might be in brown man shaves category) what should I be looking at- you're reffering to different angles...? I hope to shave with your expertise some day:)
James Guyton -Different edges meaning the type of stone used for the finished edge. They’re all a bit different. Kind of like different seasoning on a steak. The grinds are how thin they get the blade. Full hollows are thin but the heavy grinds are thicker and impart a different overall feel to the shave.
@@drmatt357 oh ok thank you, thought it meant different types of angle used like a three angle bevel grind or tripoint, or different style of sharpening
Cody Johnson - It’s a Brian Brown and he’s a guy who used to make custom and semi custom razors. Not any more tho from what I understand. Check Koraat Knives, they’re the best.
Glad my beard can handle a straight razor. Couldn't imagine shaving without one after these past years. If a beard can't handle a near or full wedge (heavy grind) with an edge from you that is some tough beard! An alternative would be like the cave man; set it on fire😬
Sharp my razer bought a stone spray with water go up and down hold razer each side ten to twelve pass strop on belt test on the arm of bit of paper watch your fingers
Takes practice Jas. I don't see too well without my glasses either. Everything is a soft blur. It helps to clean up the shave cream and make definitive lines so it's easier for the eye to see.
@@drmatt357 absolutely of course I got it that's why I said it! You want to start smaller then a Chevette! Probably a Mini Cooper or a smart car! Seriously Keep On Keepin On you're doing a great job there!
Great video. Just started the straight razor shaving about six months ago I started out with a kamisori I got on EBay. I’ve finally got my left hand calibrated for the left side of my face. I now have at least thirty shaves with no blood leakage. What are your thoughts on the Solingen blade I got it from the Art of Shaving store seems to work pretty well. I’m also curious about other blade recommendations that will not break the bank.
Robert Golden - most of the modern German stuff I’m not real happy with... Wacker is the exception. Best modern mass produced razor is the Thiers Issard IMO.
Oh, maybe not stopping right then? I know I had the issue of my razor being exceptionally sharp, but my blade not being sharp enough, and then I figured I was stripping wrong.
william webb - I thought about that too so when he received the initial razor from me, I asked him to not strop it as I already did. If he could have properly stropped it just prior to the shave, that may have helped a little but not enough to account for issues he had IMO.
Zachariah Magallan - Fair question. When shaving with one of these razors, there’s only 1 blade. Each time you do a “pass”, you remove a little more of the whisker. When you have a cartridge with 3-5 blades, it’s hitting the whisker that many times each stroke. So we not only do 2-3 passes but we do them in different directions to most efficiently knock down the hair. From top to bottom or “with the grain”, ear to nose or “across the grain” and south to north or “against the grain”. Some guys don’t do the last one if they have sensitive skin. Having said that, even if you use a cartridge with multiple blades, you’d still get a better shave if you do 2 passes. So you’re asking yourself, why not just use a cartridge then. First, this gives a better, closer less irritating shave. Takes longer but for us old guys, it’s not about time. It’s one of the few things in life that are an enjoyable way to pamper ourselves and for many, is a hobby. And we don’t consider those plastic cartridges very manly!😏
9:22 across three razors, plus swapping the shave cloths from your daughter from hand to hand - though you did start lathered and brushed up, but you're beating the pants off Anthony's time. I remember you clocked his time & technique to an almost identical routine from video to video...You Win! Next, as for the choppers versus those li'l ginsu dealys...I'm assuming that you've got more than that BB in your wedge/near wedge collection. IF not, this was your wake up - all wedges to whiskers are the equivalent of a chainsaw to a blade of grass...bigger, fatter, heavier, more edge backed by more metal withstands the pressure of the hair and skin before "folding" (dulling/tugging) If Godzilla was a rooster, wedges are like the Godzillas of roosters in the hen house - nothing stands a chance. Honing those suckers just takes more skill to perfect the edge which is so hard to do, because "simple honing" (rock & water, in the absence of heavier blacksmithing and forging metalsmith tools) is like using, well, a rock & water to clean your shirt, when wedge razors need a commercial industrial washing machine. You'll GET the shirt clean, and you'll GET to an acceptable edge on the wedge, it's just going to take much much longer to get there, without advanced skills in the practice of honing edges. I've watched you for a few years, and I know you are no spring chicken in the hobby, but nothing compares to good honest time tested practice with those "simple" ways to improve and perfect a skill. (I can't watch a TH-cam video of the medical practice that you practice, and then just walk right in and do what you do, as good as you.) Nobody should ever assume that they can. Happy shaving!
Thanks Andrew. In all fairness, I did edit out the lathering for each pass so add that back in, it would be about 5 minutes so Anthony and I are pretty equal on time. I'm not racing but I do think Anthony is still a bit more consistent. Stroke for stroke, section for section, I'd give him a 92-95. I'd give myself an upper 80s. Regarding honing the heavy grind razors. I think the skill is similar or same, just takes 2-3 times as much at each level of stone and strop. I do notice that I lean on them more because there's more metal incontact with the stone.
people dont Seem to smart if they say a reg razor or these wont cut should use a shaver then use one of these or reg razor I never used one of these takes to much technique to line up my shavers do a real good job and its fast and no Cuttin my face
Matt just do NOT understand why you would send a Gold Dollar to a guy that is having difficulty with a str8. Sorta like bringing a skate board to Darlington.
Thomas Quinn - couple of reasons. They’ll provide a good baseline but also to confirm the original GD he sent to me that I sharpened and DIDN’T work wasn’t an error or bad honing on my part. Since both GDs didn’t work, odds that I screwed up both are slim to none.
@@drmatt357 people must had been gettin cut and they was reusing and people got infected cause they still use shavers in shops but its easy to wipe blood off them and im thinkin even if wipe blood off the orignal razors it sinks down into the bottom so its no way to wipe that blade off unless a person is detailed in cleanin it but they prob didnt know how to do that back then now if they was to reuse them they prob would clean em detailed but they so cheap no reason to
A straight doesn't have the same sharp edge as an industrially sharpened razor blade. I tried straight but went back to safety because of the lack in sharpness and because I don't enjoy handling a straight

Dartmouth Shaving - How did you shave before trying a straight razor? Have you tried a shavette or can you use a DE razor?
What do you think of Böker King Kutter? It's been on my radar and I wanted a seasoned professional’s opinion
Stephen Davidson - I’d agree Steve but we’ll see.
What is a Shobudani Aswedo edge?
Hey Dr. Matt, what do you mean when you say a heavier grind..? Because you definitely seem to like that one👍🏼
What amazing shaving skill! This man could shave with a wood chisel and make it look possible!
My chisels are sharp enough to shave with! Thanks for stopping by Mate. 😁
I much prefer natural stone edges to a synthetic. You have converted me to Coticule edges and I really don't use anything but coticules now. Always on the lookout for interesting new stones... Any recommendations?
Jeffrey Borrowman - Coticules are top edges in my opinion also Jeff. They’re so good in their own weird way that nothing can replace that.

Lo
ve when you compare all kinds of edges and stones. Can you please do more videos like this?
I prefer a DOVO 6/8 honed to perfection with Proraso shave products. 2 passes and I’m slick as an eel.
youre pretty good with that.
ive been using straights for 3 years now and only do multiple passes when i have a function to go to.(normally 3 passes).
dont need a shave for 2 days after multiple passes but every day if single pass.

Thanks Neil. Not always so easy... (next video)
Do you have a video on a whole starter kit? I want a good razor, the right stones, And a good stropping belt. I want to maintain a razor for the rest of my life and know what I’m doing
Check my "Sharpening Your First eBay Razor" video
DrMatt357 Well I bit the bullet and I ordered a kit from Amazon , a GBS KIT
Damn bro you're a pro! You made that look so easy, not one nick or cut, and zero irritation.
That's how I roll! 😉
Great shave, thanks for sharing.
Good luck!
You make that look so easy
I have a boker classic anthracite and a gold dollar, but never got then sharpened as a shavette with DE. I have a taidea 3000/8000 whetstone, and normally use 8000. Do you think this would be enough to get them good? Maybe I am not doing some right while sharpening.
You need to watch my video “How To Sharpen Your First eBay Razor”
@@drmatt357 I am watching it, and maybe my stone is not that good (I was already considering that), as you mention on it, but I will give it a try. Have done similar, but without the tape. And I also don´t have a finishing stone.
I definitely still couldn´t get then sharp as a DE, but much better. Taking off full beard, the blade pulls up the beard, hurting a little bit, but in the second pass it goes better.
Something that I had already got before is that the Gold Dollar (bought cheaper from China) seams to be better than the boker one, althought the second was more expensive and should have a better material and construction.
You make the best faces when the pass you're doing impresses you :)
I'm simple minded and easily amused.
which blade would you recommend for a beginner with a thick beard? You seem to be a pro mate

@@drmatt357 ok thanks man
Very interesting to here your thoughts on this challenging one. I'm betting on the Big Bad Brian Brown.
Doug Bear - If I were betting Doug, that’s where my money would be. But, the specs on the TI blade are closer to the shavette blade and we know that works so there could be an upset.
A kind of Hemi Truck Vs Venturi sports car comparison
I wonder where I can also get a brian brown I feel line the heavier grind will help with my thicker spots of facial hair I use a dovo forestal currently
I don't think BB is making razors anymore. Koraat makes some heavy grind ones. Check their Model 14 or even the Dr. Matt shorty I'm using in the video. He has a special grind for that razor that is heavier for thick beards. It's the cheapest route for their razors.

I had a similar problem with my boker full hollow 5/8 carbon steel. I did 4 passes and still didn’t get everything so I had to finish up with my safety razor.
ManCave TV - I’m guessing the edge needs some love. Should squeegee the hair off baby butt smooth.

A straight razor can go through anything. I have a very thick Indian beard (caveman beard) and a straight razor mows it down like it's nothing at all. Needless to say, the straight razors have to be honed properly and the shaving angle has to be within correct limits.

And what if he isn't getting his face warm and wet enough
william webb - He is because his DE and shavette shaves go fine.
Why do you shave so many times in a row
Wouldnt it be better to use scissors for long tough beards ,soak in hot towel then shave.

I would have thought that thick beard => wedge

No. They are not all that. I am so fed up with "Straight Razor Propaganda". If a person likes them-FINE. If a person dislikes them-FINE. Bu,t at the end of the day, they are a antiquated tool that some have mastered(and enjoy the ritual/skill and etc) and others dislike(or fear). Either way they are not some kind of Mythical Shaving Tool from On High.
Well said sir. I can respect that!
