  • A new CD box set, "Woodstock 50: Back to the Garden," captures virtually every minute of audio from the 1969 music festival, from the performers to P.A. announcements and audience interactions. In an exclusive visit to the Warner Music Vault in Los Angeles, "Sunday Morning" producer Sara Kugel talked with music producer Andy Zax and audio engineer Brian Kehew about canvassing the archive's rare holdings to create a 36-hour magnum opus chronicling an unparalleled event in music history: "Woodstock 50: Back to the Garden."

The problem is that the business is run by accountants. There is no 'money' in making a mirror digital copy of your archive to be stored at another site. The management has no imagination and can't conceive of the idea of posterity. Once the music is out of copyright then it's not very valuable to them any longer.

First of all, he did it so get it if you can afford it. Price unknown right now. I want to point out that great film maker D.A Pennebaker passed away last week at 94. He was a documentary film maker whose masterpiece was Monterey Pop. Since its last official release, there have been some newer issues of never before heard material, but never a complete issue of the whole shebang the way it is being done here. If they were able to clear release of all the Woodstock material, they could certainly find the energy to do this. Monterey deserves respect! I have been banging this drum for decades. Someone please get it done. PEACE

I've done it! I have the WHOLE concert! The only thing missing, because it was never recorded, was the first half of Sha Na Na doing, one song. From what I have, it sounds like SOME of the announcements were either cut off or faded out.
One thing I don't understand about Andy's version is, at the start of one Santana song, Greg (or was it Carlos?) said something like, "Okay, let's do some Latin." and Andy cut that out. Why? It was only 2 seconds! I COULDN'T have been to make their performance fit on the CD! They were only on about 50:00. Why wouldn't that 2 seconds fit? I'm pretty sure there's a couple other announcement bits that he cut but I included.

Isn't everyone gagging at the mere mention of Woodstock at this point? Anyway, nearly all the acts later admitted they were awful at the festival.

    • @sgtpepper1138
      @sgtpepper1138 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not really the point, IMO, heck I wasn't alive for another 11 years, but it wasn't necessarily that the music was spectacular, but that something like that could be put on and it was just peaceful. I've read so many stories on how people heard about it and got in their VW Bus in someplace like LA, and it broke down halfway there, and they hitchhiked the rest of the way. I doubt ANYTHING would make a half a million people just drop everything and converge on one spot, and this is pre-internet, they had no idea what was going on or if anything was going to even happen. It's just remarkable that it went the way it did.

This report is a partial lie. A friend of mine and a few dozen of his fellow professional audio-archivists put together a 15 disc set that covered nearly all of the Woodstock performances. They were missing 3 or 4 songs. I was at his house the morning the finished product arrived. They had chosen to keep it to themselves. Now, the subject in this report clearly did it too, and has a better sounding product (which includes non-performance audio which my friend’s co-project did not) but he was not the first to do the music. The first was done in the late 1990s. I actually held it in my hands.

For years they thought that nobody would want the whole entire audio of Woodstock 69.
Who would want to sit through 36+ hours of music with all the announcements and thunderstorms.
50 years later they realize that all of us modern but same hippie freaks today who wasn't even thought of at the time.
We really want the original audio and we want the whole dam thing. It's the closest we can ever get to this festival that we so wish to have been apart of.
All of it every thunder strike, every announcement, every amplifier squeal and every bad acid warning.
Dont forget Wavy Gravy ether that guy was amazing, breakfast in bed for 400 thousand!
My favorite is the Arlo Guthrie message "I was rappin to the fuzz ya dig it, suppose to be a million and a half people here by tonight.
The New York State thruway is closed man! Buncha freaks.
I'm gunna play a Bob Dylan tune man, maybe you'll sing along, maybe you won't, that's groovy.
Imma walkin down the line......wait, wait hold on.
You know there's alot of people here man and obviously you ain't walkin down a line. He probably wasn't walking down a line when he wrote it ether you know. But maybe if your in California and an earthquake hits.....".
That is one of the best moments of Woodstock for me. Young 22 year old Arlo baked out of his mind rambling on to half a million people about an earthquake in California and how it would relate to the Bob Dylan song. Or maybe how it wouldn't, that's groovy.
America was at its pinnacle that weekend with all the things happening in the so called "civil culture" with racism, assassinations and the war.
Yeeeeaaaa, and the hippies was the feared counterculture back then. 🤔
Society got that one backwards in hindsight, wouldn't ya say? ✌🌻

Not so sure about the hippies getting it right... But in the late 1960s there was an earthquake paranoia in California. As if it would happen any time then. A big one did occur - the San Fernando 6.6 quake on Feb 9, 1971.

You folks ought to talk with Alex Winter and the crew who painstakingly went through Zappa's vault and saved the tapes. Many of them a good few years older than these 50 year old Woodstock tapes. It's a shame the promoters couldn't come to terms for the 50th Anniversary Woodstock reunion concert this month. I don't expect there to be a Woodstock 100 either.

It's bizarre how people pf my generation revere the 'golden days' of the 1960's, especially Woodstock and Monterey. The best and most popular artists weren't even AT Woodstock! Where were the Doors.Beach Boys, Beatles, Rolling Stones etc etc? What you get is a glimpse of a few days where a large number of people believed the world was going to change because they got wet listening to music played by highly paid stars of the day who were helicoptered in and out, staying in some cases, just long enough to take their money and run. What was actually more redolent of America in 1969 were Altamont and Charles Manson.

    • @robertturak7547

Interesting perspective - as someone born in 1971, I've always surmised that the drug counterculture wasn't as prevalent as people always make it out to be. You hardly hear about Country music of the 60s and 70s but that was popular too. And, if everyone was a peace-loving war Dove, how did Nixon win re-election in '72 in a landslide? I think the silent majority had a lot more people than the hippie movement.

Woodstock was actually an Arts Fair and not a music festival. The bands you mention aside from the Doors would have been impossibly expensive to book given the number of acts required to fill the duration of the event. The Beatles stopped playing live in 1966.

It wasn't a free event and the tickets cost about $125 in today's money with a higher gate price planned. Recording and filming was all part of a commercial venture. Two of the organisers had Wall Street backgrounds. I think they had an idea of how many tickets they had sold before the event. The original documentary and money lying around in ticket outlets later on is what saved a busted business venture.
