  • The first part of the film is a copy of my original footage shot with an Argus super 8 movie camera, with no sound. The second part is me on T.V. in Phoenix Arizona in 1999 the 30th anniversary of Woodstock.

You are very fortunate. I got to enjoy my Woodstock experience thanks to KLSX back home in Los Angeles, during Aug 89. Was held at Cal State Dominguez Hills and included many of the original performers. Even got to talk to Wavy Gravy. The 94 Northridge Quake threw me over here to Phoenix. A totally different world than Los Angeles. I am getting up there in years, but still consider myself an activists and Aging Hippie. We were even having Love-In's in Griffith Park during the 80's and 90's. It was a real Groovy Time. What do you think happened to our generation. Far to many went from wanting to change the world, to now wanting to buy it. There are times, i have to question what planet am i on today? Are you still here in Phoenix?

I was there... Some of my buddies and I decided the night before and we just went. I got there just in time to see the tall chain link fence go down...! I soon took a job selling hot dogs at a concession... all the food was gone in one hour. I made a small pay check for that. I saw a friend from my home town, Steven Tallerico who you will know as Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame... He was in a very bad condition, if you know what I mean. The crowd continued to swell. I ran into a previous girlfriend and her sister who put me up in their tent. I stayed two or three days on then bummed a ride back to Westchester. I noticed a professional photographer on the stage take a shot in my direction just before I left and when the TIME Magazine special came out in December, spotted my distant image although without enough facial details to convince anyone but myself.

Its hard to believe that this event came about because of a counterculture which was only a small part of the Baby Boom generation. Most Boomers were as straight as their parents and were unaware of a lot of the music, music which was made by freaks for freaks. It was lonely for the straight Boomers, girls who were part of the counterculture didn't want to have anything to do with them. They were angry and confused at something they didn't understand. A lot of that changed after the Woodstock documentary was released, many of those straight Boomers finally realized that their parents, the media and the authorities were misleading them about the "hippies". At that point, many of them started growing their hair and started smoking pot. Unfortunately they were unaware of the reasons why the counterculture came about, they diluted the meaning of things and it became just a fashion for them, it was the beginning of the end.

It's great to see some of the backstage stuff and different angles of the bands compared to the released footage. I love and have most all of the videos that are domestically released....and many others. I love the movie...BUT it relies heavily on closeups from the musicians on the stage. I mean it works great with the split screen stuff but I never really get to see what's in the surrounding area of the stage. It's interesting to see Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi hanging out near the helicopter landing area!!!! I so wish I could have been there. Thanks very much for sharing the footage.

The stage was nothing more than a shit load of scaffolding tied together. Not very strong, in fact you could only get on the stage if the band you were with was on or you were on the stage crew. The film crew was off stage in the front.

Visiting this site on the 50th anniversary of Janis Joplin's death. For anyone who doesn't know, this footage is remarkable not only for its depiction of rock and roll history, but for LGBTQ history: This is, as far as I can tell, the only film of Janis and her girlfriend Peggy Caserta (that's Peggy in the flowered minidress with Janis). It's wonderful to see the joy in both of their faces, and I only wish I had found this site in time to thank Jay for shooting and sharing this film.
