The Devil in Me Review - The Final Verdict

- While some of The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me's characterizations feel a bit too flat to really make the cast pop, and the more extreme moments of the story didn’t quite work for me, it’s hard to deny that this Dark Pictures entry has more going for it than not.
The new ideas it introduces into the formula might ultimately be too few and far between to totally make up for some of the lingering issues that have held back these games since this anthology began, but it’s still a solid horror adventure for fans of the series and the genre.
The one thing I notice in this game was the face animations. The characters don't make many emotional expressions by their words, their heads would bobble around ALOT, and most of the time their eyes would wonder off when they're talking to someone, it just seem like they're not looking directly at them in most cutscenes. And this not new since in their previous game have that weird issue where the characters doesn't pay attention.
But it should be improved because this is the forth one.. They need to step up their care for facial animation
Yes I saw it too and nobody is taking about that. The reviewer are giving bad score but because of the story and character but this is subjective. The lack of emotion in the animations are not subjective. People should take point down because of this not the story and the personality of the characters
@@PonTran194 Yeah frl they should focus on that 😅
woke characters....
I will NEVER purchase diversity/woke games
Whatever your opinion of the story and characters are, the glitches and technical issues in co-op+single player are extremely frustrating. Feels like it could have used another few months of polishing and QA testing.
Played on PS5?
Even until dawn was better and it‘s almost 8 yrs old
@@АндрейГорбунов-ш7эyes
@@joggenameless8109games are largely getting worse, not better. probably because instead of hiring the best people, these game companies are more concerned with hiring people with the same woke mentality as them.
I wanna see their final game take place in the narrator's manor with him as the antagonist. But we don't realize it's him until the end. And he does continue to narrate the story as the game goes on.
This game has serious issues on Ps5. I am not going to continue playing it until they fix the game. Tons of pop ins, missing assets, and so many more... I hope they fix at least the technical aspects of this game
That's unfortunate. Hope they patch em soon.
@@GreysDen me too. I never noticed any major technical issues with any of their other games so this was quite shocking to me. I am gonna assume they rushed the release of this title and put more of their work on The Quarry.
@@nekokikogaming3530 Asking for curiousity but why keep playing until they fix it? You might finish it before that happens. I get you want to play it but wouldn't it make sense to stop until a patch drops?
Me to I swear the motion capture really bad pop ins and the lips are not syncing with the voice acting I only played 10 mins
@@rhyleygrant5660 yeah it's absolutely horrible. We only played 15 mins and couldn't take it lol.
I would've liked if they had fleshed out the story and animation more and had this as their second big game rather than the quarry. the quarry would've been a decent dark pictures game imo
I like the antagonist but the absolutely dead eyes, technical issues, and some forced themes really hurt it for me overall.
I wish there were more deathtraps for the characters to go though. I think the killer chasing people with a knive is pretty lame.
I love the H. H . HOLMES story and saw like atmosphere so far just hope they fix all the 🐛 bugs problem!
I'll be picking this up this week as I love the entire anthology and can't wait to see where this one goes
Stopped at house of ashes.
This one goes H.H. Holmes Murder Castle / Saw route the upcoming one will go to space Directive 8020
Don’t buy it. Just played it. Massively underwhelmed
@Green Grugach Get the Quarry, almost as good as until dawn, 10-12 hours long and you can find it on sale usually for $30
@Green Grugach Thanks for the reply and recomendations bro from Upstate NY.
Co-op on xbox was unfortunate. Quicktime button prompts and decisions just not appearing on screen. Every death that happened in our playthrough was purely the games fault which was far from the case in all other Supermassive games.
Wait for an update if you want co-op
That's why it is best to just wait on Supermassive Games their releases have a ton of issues that take months to even address let alone fix, by the time those issues are solved you can find their titles for much cheaper
@@bamban_garcia5562 never had any real issues with their other games and always played on release date.
@@chuckielover06 I have even Until Dawn had issues like I said for me is just best wait until they are fixed before buying them
Hell I would not mind if more studios went the digital only release route then actually print physical copies when everything has been ironed out
Player it „day one“ in online co-op and didn‘t experience any game breaking Stufe. Once my flashlight didn‘t work properly and another time, one item couldn‘t be picked up…
@@bamban_garcia5562 they won't fix it they never listen
Think I'll pick up the whole collection later on down the line when ots heavily discounted
Definitely worth it!
One thing I've learned about any mainstream video game review is, if the game is made by Telltale, Quantic Dream or Supermassive, you take whatever score they give and add at least 2
Well you can remove 5 points for this one.
Or remove 2.69 on this one cuz it's scuffed af
just watched someone play the game for 8 hours and 6 of them were troubleshooting buggy cinematic, constant crash and disconnect and story progression that didnt make any sense
Remove quite a few, the bugs and other issues drastically lower the score..
I loved this game. I like HOA better but this is a close second
No one likes their HOA!!😂
IGN only knows three numbers - 5, 7, and 10
IGN = CANCER FOR GAMES
Dude it's not IGN
Actually i think that gamingbolt reviews are making sense compared to ign - arguments are making sense, and general opinions on games are very similar to mine 95% of the time
IGN hit 5! Glad gamespot give it 7!
I played this game on multiplayer and I think it's safe to say this was a huge letdown with all it's bugs. Play this game by yourself because co.op is unplayable
I agree because me and my mate had everyone survive to the boat part until mark kept dying due to a decision that never showed up on my end I couldn’t do anything which he sent a picture and I said mark was in a back position and saw the change that for my mate he was in a front position, it’s unplayable on co-op
For me, the cut scenes are way too long. We need more action and less scripted waffle
Especially when the scripted waffle is below the bar of any horror game.
I don't know why they (edit: this reviewer) keep saying the best facial in gaming industry? It is not even better than Life is Strange True Colors, not mentioning Detroit: Become Human.
I mean I can see so much weird angle camera to show off all uncanney valley throughout all those footages. Supermassive Games always not that good in terms of the consistence in cinematography scenes, they always chose close-up to all the face & make it looks so bad.
Until Dawn imo still their best and most impressive details, not that many uncanney valley facials unlike their recent games. The Quarry left me a lot of disappointed & its multiple endings are the worst.
Never said it was the best in the industry.
@@quorented2849 Until Dawn, The Quarry, and all the Dark Pictures games are made by the same developer. Supermassive Games. Dark Pictures is the name of the anthology, not the developer.
I totally agree with the weird camera angles. The facial animations are definitely off, like their eyes wondering around when they're talking to someone.
@@Johnnygrafx sorry, it was not the right words from him saying at 04:15, he mentioned one of the best facial, not the best.
Still, it is not improved and somehow getting worse. It is not one of the best as well
The wondering doll eyes and the shaky heads in the motion capture has been a consistent problem with Supermassive games - it takes you out of the immersion too much considering they are interactive dramas.
But this is probably what you get from a studio that churns out a new game literally every year. They’re all probably rushed
The cast isn't that bad and the optimization was really nice but overall this has to be the weakest dark pictures game out of them all, I just feel like the setting and killer could've been used way better like for example in some shots his mask looks different and at some points in the game had me thinking maybe there is two killers if they actually had 2 killers even better and their could've been way more death traps in and outside the house then what we run into but I think the lack of what they had will be made up for in the next game because of the setting alone
how little hope and man of medan were the weakest
Loved this game, but I was really hoping they were going to incorporate some running and jumping into the change sequences, which they never did.
I’m hoping that maybe I missed some sequences due to some characters dying, but I doubt it
The Cast in The Devil In Me is actually my fav from all the games…
Salim in house of ashes was good
@Salt Maker idk I sent it twice
Bunch of woke young spoiled brats?
I’ve learned nowadays critics get more views being negative towards, movies, games, and songs. What ever they rate it add +3
@@zackzeleo8446 no, no, no. This definitely deserves probably a 0 then so call it a 3
It’s hard for me to see a game dedicated to story telling having lower quality face animations than most other games with much broader gameplay mechanics.
I love supermassive and I personally own all of their games but this one…. This was a flop for me. Yes, I still think it’s worth playing and owning but I would highly suggest anybody to wait till it goes on sale or pre-owned. Realistically, it’s not worth buying brand new.
This game had a huge opportunity to really explore different storylines and expand on their unique characters, but unfortunately dropped the ball on it. I have played through the original version, and then the curators cut, and even with reading all of the information that you find in the game and all the clues, I still don’t get the story. It honestly feels like a B grade movie. It left me feeling confused about the overall story, and what it was trying to convey, and I also found myself really annoyed with the extremely long cut scenes that were so frequent. I couldn’t bring myself to play more than an hour at a time, if that. The glitches in this game are so terrible. I don’t understand how they could play this game and release it with all of the glitches and what feels like missed information. It honestly feels like I’m playing a beta for the game. I also think that they went down in their graphics a bit too. I love the company, and not every game can be a smashhit. It’s honestly a flop this time around, but that doesn’t sway my opinion overall of the series and my continual support of the following games that they’ll have. The game just felt like a filler in the whole series.
I still want to reiterate, that I am a diehard, and I think the game is worth owning for the sake of having it in the enterology, because they are setting it up to have more than likely, maybe like three more in the series. The only thing that was memorable and stuck out for me was the Shelby character because that’s my name lol, and also the mentioning of Fort Wayne. My game rating for The Devil In Me: 4/10.
Anthology*
Thanks I was gonna get it but saw the quarry was on sale. Had to check to see if it's worth the money
@@TheAtm12345the quarry is ehhh alright until dawn and house of ashes witj a friend was fun
The thing that annoyed me was using the same actress twice that turned the immersion of instantly
This or the quarry which is better guys?
The quarry no question
Better story
Better gameplay
Characters give off the same vibe as until dawn where some are more enjoyable than others hence how Mike and Sam were my favorite in until dawn
Just my opinion
I haven’t played this, but I loved The Quarry. It felt like it was a higher quality than TDPA games I played.
@@Peter-gj4fy I played until dawn and all suppermasive games and i gotta say The Quarry was not so good mainly because its trying to be until dawn 2.0
The quarry is a good bet. It's a LOT like until dawn but just different enough to keep it fun.
Neither are good to be honest
Wow...lost me immediately. Some of the Dark Pictures games are phenomenal
AH I FEEL ALIVE!
We (fiancee and I) usually play most games...this looks terrible. Hard pass.
I think we can agree, out of all the anthology games, Little Hope was the worst
I loving this game so far. I've enjoyed 3 of the 4 of the series. Man of Medan, house of Ashes were great. Devil in me has been the best one yet. Little Hope was good up until that god awful ending. It's all in his head ending ruined the whole game for me.
That little hope ending was EXTREMELY sad to me, why would you be disappointed at that?
@@Zipperskull_ it was sad but it made the decisions you made meaning nothing. Totally ruined the point of replaying the game.
@@freshlysqueezed007 why do u haw to replay it for it to be good? ending was the main reason why i liked that game

@@AtomicEy aw you're mad because I told the truth. Hey there might be some dialogue in the game... get ready to cry about that next.
House of ashes was great. Will try this one later
Idk what it is, bad acting or bad script or whatever but man I have never once thought any of these characters are real humans. They seem like AI generated humans.
it’s the poorly animated faces man if they spent time putting effort into that it would be pretty good but
My main gripe with this game is as follows.
SPOILER ALERT:
In my initial playthrough, I lost Erin and Jamie. I lost Erin when she and Kate were in three chambers that drained out the air. Knowing that flipping the lever will kill one, I choose not to, thinking that it would 1) leave them with just enough oxygen 2) it was trying to use my panicked state against me to make a rash decision. Kate survived but Erin's punk ass didn't, most likely because i refused to use the inhaler that the killer gave to me. Dude was known for boobytrapping things, why would o use it when she needed to learn to control her breathing on her own. But the crazy thing was, after playing the scene later, the solution was to swing the lever to Kate. Somehow there just happened to be a window leak, enabling Erin to be freed and enabling Kate to survive just long enough for Ryan to free her. HOW TF was I supposed to guess there was a leak im the window? STOOPID!
The next loss involved Jamie. Jamie and Kate devised a plan to trap the killer between some walls. Jamie is the bait and offers to give Kate her screwdriver. Knowing that Jamie will be in direct contact with him, she seemed like she'd need that more than Kate. Later on Jamie gets chased, never bothered using the screwdriver, but okay, and they trapped dude in the walls... for about 5 seconds (not sure how he phased through the walls). He chases them and both end up in a divided chamber and the wall is moving towards Jamie. Great, i have the screwdriver, so maybe i can undo the panel and turn it off, break the glass with it, or unlock the door somehow. Nope. Time came to make a decision; Sacrifice self or Kate. I chose not to kill Kate to try to force her to use the fucking screwdriver. Nah, she chose to get squished.
Played the same scene later with Kate having the screwdriver. She tried to break the glass, didn't bother undoing the panel, Jamie reveresed the wall, and Kate resigned herself to her fate. For a couple of minutes the game told me that she was dead. Until she wasn't. The wall stopped inches from squishing her and was somehow held back by the screwdriver. Glass breaks and she and Jamie are free, only to be chased again.
Why the fuck didnt Jamie do the same when she had the screwdriver? Why is the right choice always to try to kill Kate? Some of the choice outcomes in this game are impossible to know, like the window leak. Very disappointed in this one.
Damn that is too much reading for a TH-cam comment
@illbet4589 well, I understand everyone's reading level isn't up to snuff. Twitter/X would be more your speed.
I can't unshake the fact that this setup almsot reminds me of the setup in Scary Movie 2
Is it me or the game is extremely buggy? I've seen clips where the characters would rotate their heads 180 degrees especially when they hold their source of light (lighter, flashlights) lol
Loved House of Ashes, and even thought Man of Medan was good once the thrills started. Little Hope I didn't like at all, but I think it might still be better than this one. The new additions are really superfluous, and don't add anything to the experience. I'm about halfway in, and this cast is boring, the performances are bad, the motion capture is really off, the dialogue is weak, and it runs really glitchy on PS5.
First of all
The game literally have bug on my ps5..and they literally reusing the same model..Anyway the game still okay
They have been reusing models since game one
@@chase-2200 yep..and that make my heart feel meh..

I'm so tired of people sleeping on House of Ashes. It's better than Until Dawn.
NO
Don’t know about better than until dawn but it’s very very good yes
Ima have to watch house of ashes but until dawn is the og game and is the best in my opinion as far as story and characters
FINALLY SOMEONE APPRECIATES THE GOAT THAT IS HOA
We’ll I see what u mean now bro just finished uh house of ashes play through and yea…I’d have to say it’s either better then until dawn or there atleast neck & neck
As of anything with supermassive games that has to do with this genre of games, it'll be great. But if you're looking for something from them that competes with Until dawn then the dark pictures is not it. You're looking for The Quarry.
Strange but i loved Until Dawn and enjoyed all the anthology games but The Quarry bored me to death and I promptly sold it after one play.
@Salt Maker no, I meant I sold it after I completed the full game once. It wasn’t bad, I just personally didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as all the other games.
@Salt Maker i was the opposite loved it from the start had a lot of issues with it by the end… the ending felt so sudden and inconclusive. There was a total lack of closure on well, pretty much anything. Felt like a good 20 minutes was cut or something… i still like the game but the way it ended bumped it down from love to just eh i like it enough. Usually after beating these games once im itching to replay but once i finished the quarry i was too disappointed to wanna go back right away… even before the ending though i wouldnt say its on the level of until dawn.
@@Allgloss312 have you tried both endings?
@@Taylormade2350 not personally but yes ive seen the multitude of endings and variations on youtube and still think it all feels so sudden and more so than plot wise my issue is with inconclusive character arcs…. I am a person who is big on characters so to me the way characters were handled in the end and the way the story is tied up regardless of ending just wasnt to my taste.
The first two Dark Pictures games can be a bit weak. I get why people might dislike them. But Devil in Me and especially House of Ashes was pretty fun.
This was probably the worst game they have made. Animations, face, story and gameplay, bugs, choices and all. It felt so unfinsihed, so any positive feedback is just bullshit. This 7 should be a 4
I burst out laughing when you said some of the most solid facial capture animation in the genre…ARE YOU HIGH?!

Im loving this game 😀😃
Cant find ur house of ashes review
Most of the caracters are iritaiting and you are not sad if they die but happy
Dissapointing for lesbian scene smh
Their best game for me personally. Only one I wanted to replay once I finished. There was atmosphere, great sound design, fun setting and I didn't hate all characters. I could also follow the story and understand where characters were and why. Exploring was also improved since they added the notification that interacting w a certain objects will progress the story. Exploring in Little Hope was like "Nope, moving on, those sparklies you saw there you have to hug the right side of the road to get to!" Had only 1 bug w a floating knife in the air, a screen tear or two, and characters snapping into positions when interacting sometimes, nothing game breaking. Single player though, don't know about co op. I loved it.
I love all supermassive work I enjoyed this game story was brilliant imo
