How I Used Training to Deal with Life Problems (Don't Do This)

  • Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is often like a form of meditation for many of us. After a hard training session we often feel a stillness in our mind.
BJJ does this like very few things can.
I bring this up because our friend Josh used BJJ to deal with a lot of the issues that exist outside the gym. But right now, he's injured and is not able to train Brazilian Jiujitsu.
And the problem with this is, he's dealing with his father who is dying of cancer and his girlfriend just left him as well.
He wants to get back into the gym as soon as possible and asked about the type of training he should be engaged in.
In this video, I talk 1st about how I was in a very similar situation as Josh, and how I dealt with it (which wasn't a good way).
Instead of dealing with with my mother's passing I chose to numb myself with excessive amounts of training. To the point where I would be in the gym at 3am lifting just to exhaust myself so I couldn't think.
At the end after me trying to get Josh to think about easing his BJJ and Lifting training schedule I give a few tips on how train without aggravating the injury.
    I hope the video helps!

Damn Chewy! I've enjoyed your technique videos for about a year now but this video just raised my already high level of respect for you to another level! As a retired police officer, I know what its like to suffer from anxiety, PTSD, and the subsequent depression that the anxiety and panic attacks cause. While going through the worst of it I read book after book and the one book and program I would recommend to anyone suffering from anxiety and panic disorders is called DARE by Barry McDonough. What you touched on about going with the flow really resonates a lot about what the program is about. In a nut shell, it's about learning to accept and allow the anxiety instead of fighting it (which we all tend to do). "What you resist persists and what you accept goes away!" Also what you said about the chest pain, "if I'm gonna have a heart attack just let it happen is another example of re training the mind to accept and allow the physical sensations caused by the anxiety (which is basically adrenaline caused by a false a false fear triggering the fight or flight response in our nervous system). Sorry for the rant but hope this helps if anyone out there needs help with anxiety. Thanks for all you do chewy. Keep up the good work.

No reason to say sorry for the rant! I appreciate your feedback on it. Suffering from anxiety and stress can be a hard thing to talk about and many people don't want to talk about it. I'm glad you enjoyed the video.

Research shows when you’re stressed you are not capable of the same volume or the same improvement as if you were not. It’s important to let up and not expect too much of yourself because you are literally less capable of it. Be kind to yourself, take some time to heal and get your head in a better place.

ERik I would recommend dipping into the evidenced-based fitness world and follow people like Eric Helms, Menno Henselmans, Omar Isuf, Alan Aragon, Lyle McDonald, Brad Schoenfeld, Mike Isratel, Bret Contreras, etc. subjects such as this are regularly discussed due to their huge impact on performance, building muscle, losing fat, and general health.

My mother died two months ago. And with covid lockdown rules here in the UK I haven't been able to train BJJ at all this year and can't go to the gym.
Man, I felt this hard training was also my biggest form of relief from anxiety and without it, I've felt totally out of control with everything that was happening in my life.
But In some ways, it has been a good thing as I had to deal with the grief and all the other emotions and I couldn't run away from my problems.
In the end, I went and got grief counselling it's been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
I think if it wasn't for covid restrictions I would have fallen into the same old pattern and tried to just train and bury the emotions.

Its so funny for me to see this video today because I train the same way(6 days of rolling, 5 days of lifting)to drown out the negative thoughts and feelings i've been experiencing in my life for the past year. It was actually these problems I'm still dealing with that finally forced me through the doors of my gym and onto the mat 2 months ago, after spending almost 2 years watching these videos and others contemplating if i wanted to try jiu-jitsu out or not. Definitely feels like a drug at times because if i miss a day or i half-ass training, the negative emotions and thoughts flood my mind and kinda makes me feel like a drug-addict that hadnt had his fix that day. However, Jiu-jitsu has taught me alot about balance. If you are not balanced, you're getting swept or reversed; But when you have a good center and are balanced, someone will have to really put forth effort to push you into a "negative" position. Life is the same way; Achieve balance, maintain composure, and remember that for every submission attempt life throws at you, there is an escape; you just need to breathe, think, and find it.

Wow, I'm what happens when you've never dealt with that chest pain(noticed it 20 years ago in my early 20's) and now at 42 I have chronic pain all over. Glad to see you chewy have turned it around. I quit jj in my early 20's due to numerous physical limitations from life-long stress/depression but recently picked up that old fresh blue belt I earned way back then and have been rolling the past 6-8 months non stop. It's been a struggle and I have to be very careful and tap a lot and just chill(despite young hungry white belts throwing me around) but I decided I just won't quit as I did years ago a couple times. Jj on its own won't solve your problems but it can help in many ways, simply with how it helps build confidence but also with the discipline it requires from you whatever your health and skill level which can carry over to other challenges. Competing would be tough for me but I could whoop my self from before!

That's a great point about being flexible about training schedules. I've been unable to train at the jiu jitsu academy for a long time but I've viewed it as a chance to do my own work at home, bought a grappling dummy to work top transitions, worked on my inverted movement, added wrestling movement drills, did a lot of research on bjj concepts and finessed my fundamental movements. My enforced lay off from rolling has been, in a weird way, something that has made me a better person and ultimately, I think, a better and more disciplined grappler.

So much heartfelt and down to earth honest advice & insights. I especially relate to wanting to hold on to things the way they are. I want my routines to stay the same, my work, my coach, my family, friends and my health but all these are in constant flux just like most things in life. That's one of the many reasons I love training Jiu-jitsu, it's teaching me to literally roll with things as they come, know when to slow down, when to speed up, to be in the moment, and adapt to what life's offering right then & there instead of trying to force my ideal way of living. Keep up the inspiring work Chewy!

Can't say I can relate. If life is bothering me, an excuse to think about something else, like a good video game OR jiu jitsu would give my troubled mind a little vacation. Only thing that stops me from training are physical limitations. Maybe you've just not gotten that into it yet. Got your blue belt yet? Once you get a good feel for the game it can become a passion and then you'll constantly want to improve. If this is the case keep it up, like any game it gets more addicting and can get you a break from your issues AND indirectly help you with them. If I can get a bit better with my jj I remind myself I can improve in other areas of life if I just apply myself as I do with jj. Good luck

    • @juntjoonunya9216
      @juntjoonunya9216 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I've had a bad one for over 20 years now. I suppose I could have had surgery but never did. I just keep an eye on mine. Don't do anything too crazy with it, or any joints for that matter and I'm still pretty agile at 42 actually. I do this for several physical issues. But so I've gathered certain surgeries, like those for knees or shoulders really work out well, if you can write the check for it. But if you train carefully, like don't ever let your ego get the best of you which is basically how most of my injuries happened, you can make your knee adapt and strengthen from where it is. Now my 'bad knee' is a slight annoyance. Good luck

If I could back through time, I would tell myself to train BJJ for the right reason and put emotion on a side and train smart; that way I wouldn’t ruined my joints and not get cauliflower ears.

BF? I think you mean boyfriend right?
My girlfriend is happy with me and I do my best to be a good partner to her especially with her understanding nature due to my unusual lifestyle.

This video is not what I thought it would be.
