  • From the downing of a passenger jet, to the assassination of a top general, and now one of the world's largest coronavirus outbreaks, life in the Islamic Republic is facing its toughest challenges since it was founded in 1979.
Just days before all hell broke loose, VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travelled the country, meeting people from all walks of life: from hipsters to hostage takers, and from top lawmakers to one of Iran's heaviest metal bands.

I am from India. I have lived in Iran from 2011-2017. So I have seen them under both Obama and Trump. The regular people are very friendly and open to interaction from foreigners than their govt cares to admit. The USA is losing friendship with some of the most honest and courageous people in order to please the Saudis.

I am from Australia, this documentary has helped me to open my mind on Iran. In the west our leaders paint countries like Iran as being everything bad. Your documentary reveals a country that is beautiful and a people who are kind and welcoming. And resilient in the face of a great deal of unfair treatment by the west. I am disgusted that the USA places sanctions on any country. They have no right to harm the people of any nation just because they can. The US has done so much to harm the peoples of so many nations with their silly acts of power. It harms the people not the govt. before the US you at the English meddling in the Middle East. It’s not hard to see why the people of these countries have developed distrust towards western countries. I was left thinking deeply towards the end of the documentary and cannot help but wonder if the treatment of the Iranian govt by the us and others in the west hasn’t played a part in some of the ways the govt has restricted its people too. I wonder if the Ia]radian govt was dealt with more fairly and freely if this would have softened Iranians views of the western communities and made it easier for some of the western freedoms to seep into the govt over decades. I don’t think we have all the answers in the west and our communities have lots of problems too but I wonder what that “blended” society would look like for both countries had it not been for all the reasons the US gave the Iranian govt over decades to hate us., which no doubt hardened their stance perhaps towards its people too.

Iran has the largest Jewish population in the Middle East after Israel, Tehran is scattered with Synagogues, Iranians have lived alongside their Jewish compatriots for millennia. Today people of the Jewish faith get twice the representation in the Iranian parliament as compared to the average Muslim Iranian citizen: once as a resident of an Iranian province and once as a member of a religious minority. How can the creators of this film reconcile these facts with their proposition that the Iranian political establishment is Anti-semitic at the core of its political identity?
Being anti apartheid South Africa is not being anti-white, is it? By the same logic, shouldn't being anti Israeli occupation and apartheid not be automatically labelled as antisemitic?

Dear brothers and sisters, I want you to know.
    Iranian government and special services.
I Jamilya Baramikova, I live in Canada.
Parang Gholamazad, Pourang Gholamazad (Artin Partovian, Radio Shemroon) and their patrons:
    1. The Israeli MOSSAD, whose agents are
    Two brothers.
    2. Cathy Woodbeck - Thunder Bay Multicultural Association.
    and others,
    For 20 years,persecuting Jamilya,
with the help of organized provocations, organized, ordered
conflicts , slander, shame in society, lawlessness, etc. -
to this day, they are destroying the life of Jamilya and her family
    in Canada.
We want to tell YOU, the whole WORLD, why all of the above persons are trying to finally destroy the life of Jamilya Baramikova and her family, to destroy her.,
because, they need confidence, a guarantee for the future that no one will ever expose the lawlessness that they committed in the Thunder
Bay Criminal Court-- against Jamilya Baramikova.
Parang Gholamazad, through the Criminal Court (Thunder Bay), stole Jamilya the status of a political refugee UNHCR ,
Parang declared that status Political Refugee UNHCR Ankara-Geneva,
belongs to him ,-but in fact this status belongs only to Jamilya B , Status UNHCR - never extended to Parang Gholamazad.
For 20 years now, Parang Gholamazad has been speculating on the status of a political refugee,
    and thriving in Canada.
Parang slandered Jamilya, so that no one would ever listen to her,
he told everyone that she was mentally ill.
He,- (Parang Gholamazad ) -- began to convince everyone, to deceive that it was he who brought Jamilya and her family to Canada.
We ask Canadian Government, Law Enforcement Canada, UNHKR Geneva -Ankara to take control of the issue of the safety of Jamilya B. life, since UNHCR status - "Political refugee"
--belonging to Jamilya B . -----we suspect that
    might cost her life ,
because Jamilya"s status - "POLITICAL REFUGEE," in Canada was assigned by Parang Gholamazad ,--- with the help of his patrons and defenders ,-
they ,will go to great lengths to silence Jamilya ,so that she is not in this world.
We want , The UNHCR Ankara-Geneva , the Canadian authorities, all law enforcement agencies in Canada to know, that all provocations and conflicts against Jamilya in Canada are organized by Poorang Gholamazad,- brother of Parang Gholamazad.
Parang Gholamazad is hiding behind his brother, Poorang Gholamazad (Artin Partovian) and etc.,
Pourang,Poorang Gholamazad has been persecuting Jamilya with her child for many years, slandering, shaming in society,
    actively contacts with people
whom he orders provocations and conflicts and etc. against Jamilya B.
Pourang,Poorang Gholamazad( Azad)(Artin Partovian)-- is very dangerous person for Jamilya B., he has an interest in saving his brother PARANG from exposure, --since Parang has assigned the status UNHCR of Jamilya , and has been speculating in Canada on them for 20 years.

@Galaxy We like the people of all nations regardless of religion and color! I personally have friends from india and pakistan who are lovely and kind people. To answer your question on the baluchs and sunnis, from the people's point of view, they are just as Iranian as we are! (As a matter of fact, baluchs have very close cultural and linguistic ties with Persians). How government deals with the sunnis is a different story and i am unaware, but its certainly nothing hateful. Personally speaking, i care none as i am an agnostic.

Iranians are leaving Islam in high numbers and most Iranians want a secular government. Most Iranians want separation of religion and state in there government. The survey already bears this out. Only 32 percent of those surveyed identified themselves as Shiite Muslims. Officially, Iran puts their number at 95 percent. Islam in Iran is a political system, not a faith embraced by any majority said de Jong, who has worked with Iranian asylum seekers and opposition politicians over the last 20 years. Atheists poll at 9 percent of the population (and nones, or no religious affiliation, overall at 22%); Zoroastrians at 7 percent. The 2011 census numbered Zoroastrians at only 25,000. Extrapolating the percentage from this survey, which GAMAAN stated is 95 percent accurate, that would now be 5.6 million. (Sources said this may indicate a non-Islamic Persian nationalism rather than a true system of belief.) Nearly half (47%) said they used to be religious but are no longer. Only 6 in 10 Iranians surveyed said they were born into a religious family. But 6 in 10 also do not say their daily prayers. And 7 in 10 do not want legislation based on religion (68%); state-funded religious institutions (71%); or mandatory head covering (73%). A majority (58%) do not believe in wearing the hijab at all. And according to a 2019 survey by GAMAAN, 79 percent of the population would vote against an Islamic republic.

the problem here is the iranian regime which doesn't interpret and practice Islam as it should be. i saw many videos from iran in which extremely backward iranians abused and attacked females who did not have a hijab on. two girls were in a shop shopping with their hijabs down, suddenly a guy comes and abuses them (maybe), shouts at them for not wearing hijab and reminding them of the law and what's worse is threw yoghurt or milk at them for which the store owner attacked him back for disrespecting with them, another video showed the same mindset iranian shout at an iranian woman for not having hijab on etc. these backward people are unfortunately not arrested for their behaviour which has absolutely no relation to Islam. Islam doesn't say to disrespect females by abusing them, beating them, forcing them. islam absolutely condemns these kind of acts. according to Islam, if a female doesn't have the hijab on then the person must go and talk to her in a nice manner about how is she, how is her family, friends, life etc. like basic conversation and then tell her about hijab and its benefits regarding society and herself personally. if she still doesn't agree then leave her as u have done your responsibility, now its between her and Allah (God). never hit or abuse females if you are a muslim bcz our prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "take care and look after your wives as they are like your companions, friends and life partner not slaves", "the best amongst you is the one who is best to his wives", "approach females while lowering your gaze out of respect", "paradise lies under the feet of mothers" (respect love and care for your mothers to achieve paradise). there are many other verses, sayings and commands of islam regarding how you must take care, respect females. i hope the regime understands, interprets and practices Islam as it should be Ameen

1 Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.
3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word.
4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.
5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.
6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.
7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.
8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.
9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.
11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.
12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.
13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.
14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the Lord, they shall cry aloud from the sea.
15 Wherefore glorify ye the Lord in the fires, even the name of the Lord God of Israel in the isles of the sea.
16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.
17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.
19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.
20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.
22 And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
23 Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.

Persian is an ethnicity. Islam is a religion. They are not mutually exclusive. In fact, much of Islamic art, literature, philosophy, even down to court etiquette and administration was developed by or adopted from Persians from the very early days of Islam's emergence. So why shouldn't the Persians have at least just as much of a claim to Islam's civilisational heritage than Arabs, if not more?

Persians made Islam what it is today. Or at least made a very significant contribution to it. To say that we should only think of Iranians as Zoroastrians is to ignore all of Irans accomplishments in the past 1400 years because they happened to have been framed within the civilizational context of Islam.
