I love how the different symphonic metal bands each explore different themes in their music. Nightwish focuses more on humanity and science stuff, and Epica explores the heaven/hell-angel/demon dichotomy…there’s no real comparison between them, because they each have their own space
Metal heads are the most friendly people you'll meet. Proven here my friends. Oh yeah and this is Epica blowing me away. Mozart on guitar. Beethoven on keyborard and Bach on drums. And that great soaring Simone voice.

I’ve seen them 4 times in Philadelphia. The last time was in 2017 and he had that keyboard. He did indeed crowd surf that time, but also their one guitarist Isaac came into the crowd that the same time, too, behind where I was. Highly recommend seeing a show whenever shows happen again.
Yes! He didn't surfcrowd in the concert I've been to, but he did use his mini portable keyboard for Sancta Terra and, of course, shananigans with Isaac ensued. It was awesome.
About the keyboard player (Coen Janssen), he has his keyboard on a platform with wheels connected to a U shaped rail-system that goes behind the drums from left to right. He also has a curved keyboard he can wear around his waste.

Her dress is so sharp! The keyboardist DOES spin! I love the mix of Simone's high clear tones, with the guys' roars. And they have a great time! They are kinda like the Dutch version of Nightwish. I may want to eat the drummer with a spoon. Do they know how to work a room or what?!?!?!? I'm on disability, and have a LOT of joint pain. I couldn't WALK across that mosh pit! As for being part of the mosh....Nope. Trying to walk up stairs is enough of an adventure.

Well put. They are all phenomenal, but yet so different. It's always a joy to visit any of them on their tours. Had the pleasure to see Nightwish and WT end of 2022 and Epica is next end of March. This will be a blast.

god i love Epica! Mark Jansen's been a cornerstone of my musical world since he and Floor (not blood relatives) were doing their band After Forever. Floor ending up in Nightwish and Mark ending up working with Simone, and Simone and Floor being such good friends, is just the coolest damn set of circumstances that could have happened, it all makes me so happy.
I'm pretty sure that this performance, this concert in Paris, will still be an absolute masterpiece for me, even in 10 years - everything was just right that evening, absolutely everything! My personal ranking of the last few years I - No. 1 - Lovebites concerts, No. 2 - Epica concerts and very close behind the concerts of Nightwish, No. 3.

Some other great Epica songs are the title-songs (usually very Epic!), Obsessive Devotion, Never Enough, Death of Dream, Fools of Damnation, Beyond Belief, Dance of Faith, Force of the Shore, The Second Stone, Victims of Contingency, Chemical Insomnia, Natural Corruption, A Phantasmic Parade, Cosmic Algorithm, Monopoly on Truth, Sensorium, Cry for the Moon, Illusive Consensus, Facade of Reality, Seif al Din. I see you already did Sancta Terra. Have seen many wonderful Epica shows, lovely band both on stage as well as backstage. Very friendly, definitely one of my favorite bands live and very photogenic live as well (as a photographer the eye also wants something). If you ever get the chance to see them live, DO! btw the flying/moving keyboard is also done in After Forever. Give them a shot as well, some very good songs, both live as on CD (not too strange, Floor started her musical career there as did Mark from Epica).
So, FYI, Floor & Simone are BFFs and Mark Jansen (Epica guitarist) and Floor Jansen aren't related, but they were in Floor's first band After Forever together LOL! So yea the keyboard spins and also slides from 1 side of the stage to the other. They are all just having fun up there but the keyboard player Coen sometimes will spin it and push it to the other side of the stage then just run around like a goofball and then go back to playing a minute later. He also has a portable setup that he straps to his waist and shoulders and at least at the shows I've been too will crown surf with it on while playing.
This was an epic show! Seems like just yesterday we were at this concert! well we weren’t at this particular concert, unfortunately lol but this was a bad a@@ tour and remember them playing this song. Incredible live! Also, Simone was wearing that dress so easy to tell which tour. I met Mark at the end and he’s very down to earth! Ty for viewing them! 💖 hope to catch more later !
Nightwish are great and all, and I love them, but for me Epica will always be THE symphonic metal band for several reasons. They are heavier, and their lyrics are just mind-blowing. Then two guitarists, the moving keyboard (Coen Janssen is amazing!), THE DRUMMER, and add to all that the bassist AND Simone Simons's voice, my all-time favourite vocalist and her personality is simply great *.* I'm genuinely impressed no matter how many times I watch these performances. It's everything! Next I would recommend Kingdom of Heaven (I don't think it has a good quality live performance though) and The Phantom Agony live at the Retrospect show!

The concert was great. The whole lineup of the evening was cool. So much fun on stage and such a great atmosphere at the Zenith. You need to check out MaYaN. It’s the drummer and the growler of Epica plus other amazing musicians and alltogether 5 singers. Check out Saints don’t die by MaYaN.
I can't wait to hear Simone (among the other singers) in new Ayeron - Transitus (album), she is gonna be "Angel of Death" btw... Ayreon would be amazing choice to recommend for you.
Coen also has a curved walk around keyboard that he uses that is fitted like a marching band drum! You can see it really well in Dancing in a Hurricane from the same show 😁 Epica are just friggen awesome! I would also suggest Design your Universe from the Retrospect show, Essence of Silence (official live), which happens to be one of my favs, and The Obsessive Devotion (official live)

Epica - so damn skilled!!! I love Nightwish but sometimes, Epica is definitely needed for a different, heavier symphonic metal metal band with beautiful female vocals.
Homeboy goes even one step beyond this with the whole mobility issue: He has a NuMotion keyboard he can strap to his waist and crowdsurfs with it. Epic indeed.
Saw Epica with The Agonist a few years ago....was a great show. It feels like it's about time to check out Vintersea (either Fiery Tongue or Befallen.) You will NOT be disappointed.
Glasses wearer here so no, I wouldn't get into the mosh pit. Many moons ago, at a festival, I nearly lost my glasses while moshing (they landed on the guy in front of me lol) so having learned my lesson I stood on the edge of the pit for the next few acts I watched. They ended up getting knocked off by an out of control crowd surfer and my mate found them later pancaked and glassless. I spent the next five hours enjoying the festival ears-only. Yeah, great times lol.

Hi Suzi for a change of music genre however still a great female vocalist I suggest you have a look at a video by a Scottish band called Fairground Attraction whose singer Eddi Reader also has a solo career. A real fun song “Clare” is grand and “Please don’t ask me to dance” is emotive and bittersweet. I’d like to think you’d enjoy the band/Eddi cheers Mark
Sometimes I miss Floor Jansen together with Mark (also Jansen) in After Forever... His grunts and her voice together was awesome. (See the song monolith of doubt live bij kopspijkers (old public tv show)
It's so funny that this goes into a full circle for Simone in = One of Simone's best friends, Floor Jansen, (of about 10 years at the time of After Forever breaking up), now sings for the band that got Simone into Symphonic Metal and classical singing in the early 2000s. No Nightwish, no Simone as a singer. THEN Simone's husband is the Keyboard-player for Kamelot, which is where they got their band name from after the Kamelot Album "Epica".
Just want to say that Within Temptation is an amazing band, but every specialized magazine or web will tell you that the holy trinity of symphonic metal is Nightwish, Epica and THERION (the real inventors of this amazing genre. Even the members of Nightwish recognize that without THerion, they wouldn't be where they are)... Greetings from Spain...

Hi Suzi for a change of music genre however still a great female vocalist I suggest you have a look at a video by a Scottish band called Fairground Attraction whose singer Eddi Reader also has a solo career. A real fun song “Clare” is grand and “Please don’t ask me to dance” is emotive and bittersweet. I’d like to think you’d enjoy the band/Eddi cheers Mark

One of Simone's best friends, Floor Jansen, (of about 10 years at the time of After Forever breaking up), now sings for the band that got Simone into Symphonic Metal and classical singing in the early 2000s. No Nightwish, no Simone as a singer.
THEN Simone's husband is the Keyboard-player for Kamelot, which is where they got their band name from after the Kamelot Album "Epica".

Just want to say that Within Temptation is an amazing band, but every specialized magazine or web will tell you that the holy trinity of symphonic metal is Nightwish, Epica and THERION (the real inventors of this amazing genre. Even the members of Nightwish recognize that without THerion, they wouldn't be where they are)...

I Love Epica. My 2nd favorite Band after Nightwish. Epica is heavier than Nightwish wich i really like, since i listen to Metalcore aswell. And at the same time they are kind of more symphonic. I think, just like, how it is with Nightwish, there is not one song i dont like.
