So wild. Even a couple years ago, if you'd told me we'd be able to emulate full-on x86 PC games on what is essentially mid-range ARM phone hardware, I'd have called you crazy, with just a seed of doubt because Apple's Rosetta ended up working so well. But this? This is downright jaw-dropping.
I recently stumbled on this gaming niche and I couldn't believe it. Most of these devices don't even have active cooling. The rate of development rivals the mid 2000s desktop CPU gains.
I'm guessing that people in the comments that are dissing this device doesn't understand retro handhelds in general. Yes you may think that your phone is better performing but for 225$? and with great in built controls? You need to be like a 80-100$ add-on controller to rival it...
God I love how much tech evolved over the years. If you told young me we could play PC games on our phones, I'd look at you like you're crazy 😂 Ppl can whine about mobile gaming but I would not be surprised if at some point in the future, the mobile platform will be greatly respected as one of the Big platforms with PC, Nintendo, PS and Xbox. Anyways, I'll probably sell my Anbernic RG556 for this. I'm not looking for Ayn Odin 2 specs (Unless I find one for around $200+). I mostly use it for retro emulation and 3 Android games. My ROG Ally covers both gaming and emulation for the bigger stuff like PS3 and Switch.

@@andrescarrasco1248 which is why I still think that perhaps, the steam deck 2 might be ARM based. The GPU part of the Snapdragons is already AMD/ATI based and there are hints to Proton-ARM as well, so... Maybe AND think about what that would mean for steamOS on ARM
Yup - there's been some investment by Valve into tech like Box86/64 which is basically Rosetta for Linux. Have to wonder if they're looking at launching an ARM-based handheld with SteamOS at some point. You'd still need larger devices like the existing Steam Deck for more power-hungry games but as a Steam Deck Mini with excellent battery life it'd be a great product.
@@MapleSirup4ever I seriously doubt the Steam Deck 2 will be ARM based. They would have to completely redesign SteamOS to work on ARM. Also, partially basing this on an enthusiast project that's early in development is reaching a bit. I'm sure it'll happen eventually, frankly the benefits of ARM in the handheld PC space is fairly obvious and gaming on ARM simply put isn't anywhere near mature enough to interest Valve at the moment. Sure, the Steam Deck 2 is probably 3-4 years away from release, but that's 2-3 years from announcement. Realistically the Steam Deck 2 is already in early development and they've probably already solidified on the instruction set. They literally spent over a decade developing not only SteamOS, but also Proton. By switching to ARM they'd literally be throwing all that hard work away in order to create a new SteamOS and a new compatibility layer for ARM from scratch. Why do that when you can simply make another x86 handheld. That way you don't have to put money into the software side as well as the hardware. And frankly, while ARM is very impressive in terms of power efficiency (it's one of its major draws and for good reason), but the actually performance in absolute terms isn't that great.
I've been playing a lot of the original Halo with Winlator. I got Halo 2 to work but it's been having issues. Assassin's Creed runs well at low and Trine 2 runs almost at max. Battlefront 1 classic is another good one to try.

actually I can already in seconds KNOW how to do that... I know where to fetch an iso of the PC game rip (since it's ABANDONED) and also some mods and once done just have it all copied over into the "download folder" aka drive D where it can be ran from there. I'd have to wait to get a Retroid Pocket 5 since I already put down so much money into my Steam + Gog library.

I'm really sad Cassia died. There's so much power available now on modern ARM chips. Something that makes the PC emulation easy like Cassia aimed to would be awesome.
One game in particular I'm hoping to play is the PC version of Xmen origins: Wolverine. It is so expensive to get for 360 and ps3. Almost like first party Nintendo games the price of games like that skyrocketed and it seems emulation is the only way to go for those of us who had it and sold it like fools to GameStop
When i ordered this i didn't even consider winlator but after seeing some showcases of it I've actually stopped playing a few less demanding games on my steam deck and am waiting for it to arrive before starting again.
I think this'll be even better on linux with FEX. Though, there is no easy-to-use app that would manage everything. I suppose the best bet will be running steam directly through FEX and hoping steam manages proton in a good way
@Nsfwstar Actually those drivers are quite good, even better than the official drivers (especially due to vulkan 1.3 support). It’s also a part of a bigger project (mesa) and I can guarantee you. They know what they’re doing
"Can it run Crysis?" 😂 This was the most asked question for so many years from 2007 onwards. Crytek really pushed the boundaries of what was possible on PC, and you needed a pretty beefy one to run Crysis maxed out. So it's crazy to see a handheld device running it. 😅

for the fallout new vegas, the pip boy thing missing is not the winlator fault (i think) but the fallout new vegas in general. it best if you install some performance and bug mods if you can
Been thinking about this a lot lately, and I wonder why Valve doesn't release a version of Steam on Android and iOS. Like if we can run PC games now with a layer of emulation, why not just build it into a Steam launcher and make it easy on everyone? They would open up a GIGANTIC market if they made it work.

I already have some SR games but man if Valve just can't fight for true gamer ownership I'll have to slowly get so much of my collection onto Gog for the sake of actually owning besides using Goldberg or Steamless to get them drm free

Pure anec-data here; but, I was surprised to find that the older multiplatform games I've tried in Winlator seem to run better and markedly cooler than their PS2 versions do in Nether/Aether. I haven't tried newer PC AAA games on Winlator or Switch games on Yuzu because I'm only working with an SD845, and I don't want to waste my time. That said, depending on what device you've got and what your expectations are, you might be impressed. I'm using vanilla Winlator 8.0 sourced from the link in Rob The Retro Tech Dad's most recent Winlator tutorial.
@@bryanfrancisfitness - You should be fine then. The only thing I can add is that I saw where people a few months ago were saying that Winlator had some compatibility issues with the 8G3. I don't own an 8G3 anything so I haven't followed up to see if they've fixed it. The temporary fix at the time was to use the Frost fork version of Winlator, the same one that ETA used here on the 8 Elite.

for the price this one looks great but the odin 2 is more powerful, although since this one has linux compatibility who knows if there could be more game compatibility
@@HerondG Yeah linux support is massive if you ask me. Easy pc games using portmaster (not all but games like stardew valley and celeste and stuff will work nicely), native pico-8 and FEX (alternative to box86 with better performance. I believe it's also very well optimised for the freedreno open source drivers of the adreno 650 gpu)

Mostly the price/perf ratio compared to odin2 or various older phones plus like a bspd8 vigor controller

I never knew you could emulate PC games on one of these devices that just changes everything for me now

There's a new PC emulator called GameFusion. Can you use it? I think it's more optimized than Winlator.

odin 2 is way powerful than this but this one looks like psp so that's why people like it more and the design
for the price this one looks great but the odin 2 is more powerful, although since this one has linux compatibility who knows if there could be more game compatibility

@@HerondG Yeah linux support is massive if you ask me. Easy pc games using portmaster (not all but games like stardew valley and celeste and stuff will work nicely), native pico-8 and FEX (alternative to box86 with better performance. I believe it's also very well optimised for the freedreno open source drivers of the adreno 650 gpu)

Has mode to do with the emulator itself being more ootimised for the 865 than a relatively new chip in your device if im not mistaken
