  • I reviewed the Roto Grip Optimum Idol in 14 pounds. I struck a lot in this video because even some shots that didn't make the video struck! I found this ball to really blend out the lane condition on both the 44' and the 39' patterns. It's a great benchmark ball, as the motion is very predictable. Balls like this really help you understand the lane conditions in front of you.
The Optimum Idol in 14 pounds has a 2.51 Rg, .054 differential. It features the Ikon core wrapped with the new AI outer core and has the Micro Trax solid cover. The layout on this ball is 4 7/8 x 3 3/4 x 2 1/2.
On the 44' PBA Salvino pattern the Optimum Idol had some length but was still able to make the break early enough to roll through the pin deck. I was impressed with how well this ball goes through the pins with new AI outer core (which does seem to help with carry).
On the 39' Tungsten pattern I opened up my angles, going from about 12-13 to about 6-7. Even though the ball hooks sooner on the shorter pattern, it never lost too much energy and still carried very well.
I struck a lot with this ball on these two patterns! This is a great combination of control and hook that puts this ball in the middle of my bag on almost every condition, as it's not too sharp for the shorter patterns but still plenty of hook for the longer patterns.
Compared to the Gem (which has the same cover), the Gem read earlier and had a little more overall hook on both patterns.
