Do not fret! I am amazed by your vest. I taught home economics, when schools still had it, and your work is great. I know students learn in different ways and adapted instructions to students needs. You seem to be a kinesthetic learner - learn by doing. Your tips are excellent. I’m glad you finished the project. Don’t think of it as a failure since you didn’t use the sleeves and lapel. I told my students to consider the project a learning experience - which is a positive experience.

I teach garment making and one of the first issues students learn is that the sizing system for commercial patterns can be very different to off the rack sizing. I have had lots of students caught out buying the wrong size pattern, so you’re not alone!
The jacket looks great, though, the colours are beautiful

Thanks. I was so surprised at the differences between sizes.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and struggles with making a quilt coat. The vest you made is beautiful, and I hope that you’ve worn it to show it off. I too have made quilts but not garments. I have a pattern picked out, and and fabric, of course. That’s the fun part! I’ll be keeping your tips in mind as I get started with what I hope will be a quilt coat.

We must be related! I have quilted for decades. And I need to grow my patience! When I was a teenager I made some of my clothes. I usually just bought a pattern based on the look and totally disregarded my skills. Once I made a very intricate blouse in a Western style with pockets and all sorts of things I can't recall the words for. I was down to the simple task of sewing on the buttons. I did not place them right so obviously it puckered. Instead of doing the normal thing, I just took my scissors and chopped the entire thing to shreds because I was so mad. Wow. Totally stupid of me. Anyway, I just watched a video by a person who took a lovely, creative approach to making her own quilt coat. She made the quilt on her longarm! She literally loaded it with batting and then placed a variety of shapes on the batting and stitched the pieces down leaving thin raw edges which she scrubbed to get all the threads off. She loosely followed a pattern, but she kept adjusting it as she went and designed it as she went. She ended up with a large rectangular lapel which reminded me of a Lady Lancaster pattern. She took her time and let the piece drive her next move. It turned out so great! As a quilter, these are not skills we have. Quilting is an art, even though we tend to follow patterns. I really think I would like to try my hand at this creative slow style of finding enjoyment in the process. She suggested making a loose pattern by tracing around another piece of clothing that fits well as a way to start.
I do have one idea that might turn your vest into a coat if you decide you really want the coat. The style I would like to imitate (haven't been able to find a pattern) is the Lady Lancaster style called Aunt Ethel. It has large boxy sleeves sort of kimono style sleeves with cuffs. You could enlarge the arm holes and make boxier sleeves if you decide you like that style. It also has the large lapels I described and it does not have buttons or closures. It is fabulous! I plan to make a test pattern from old sheets and then I want to make one to wear around the house from an old quilt I made for my daughter. She used it hardily (as I wanted her to) and it has seen better days. I think it would be great to wear it and also I could practice with it. Anyway, thanks for your 10 tips. All very good!

To avoid the bulk of turning edges under, you can cut off the seam allowance and bind the edge.

The tamarack quilt pattern is awesome. I did it with all the lessons videos from Amanda Murphy . Truly was wonderful and easy to follow- it did take me 6 weekends to complete it slow and steady- my sister loves the coat.

I oriinally learned to sew garments, but even though my technique was good, the finished garments didn't look good on ME. Finally found a Stretch 'n Sew class, where we learned about adjusting patterns to our size. What a gift that was ! After learning how to alter patterns, ALMOST EVERYTHING I made, looked good on me! So, if you ever have the opportunity, take a class in pattern alterations. You were brave and adventurous! Don't stop trying - we all struggle with new things and sometimes the person with the least knowledge come up with the best work-arounds. I like the vest. .

Dear Claudia, I know this may be a different idea, but have you considered bartering with a seamstress who does nice work (at clothing sewing)? You'd both choose your own colors etc. If you made the patchwork quilted fabric for 2 coats and she did the sewing of 2 coats you could both have a great coat without needing to learn the other craft. Just a thought, but it could work. Anyway thanks for sharing & I hope you have a nice week. Mrs. K.

Interesting, never knew people were making quilt coats. I’ll have to look on Pinterest now to see what quilter are up to. I’m thinking your vest looks good and if you don’t like it, maybe someone may buy it from you. If not you can admire it hanging on the wall and pat ourself on the back, with a great job well done. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊

I learned to sew by making clothing. The first items didn’t turn out. Starting with a quilt coat is a difficult project. All of your points are very valid. I have made 4 quilt coats recently (and several in the past) and have taught a class. It took me 14 hours to make a simple coat (not pieced). Kudos to you for trying. I actually really like the look of your vest.

I love your vest. I made a vest using a Kaffe Fassett print. I did consider and follow several of your suggestions, even so it just fits and hangs differently because it is quilted. I tend to wear mine which is very striking like yours to places where the work that's gone into it will be appreciated. Although mine has a beautiful lining fabric I tend to not flash it because I really fudged the pockets that show inside. I am making EPP diamond blocks out of Tula Pink scraps with a plan to make a wrap around dressing gown that I can just enjoy. Still hunting for the right pattern and I will check measurements! 😂❤

I dont think quilt coats have hit Arizona yet but I love your vest! One thing to keep in mind is that sewing pattern sizes are NOT clothing sizes! Even just going by measurements is not always accurate. Try again. My thought would be to make your quilt top and sew from that, not quilted. Then if you need to quilt for warmth do it afterwards worn you know it fits. Great try, please don't let it stop you from trying again.

This is really beautiful! Please wear this vest with pride! I like the shoulders as is - it looks great on you! No one will know the problems they will see the end product which is great. I started learning to sew on clothes and even went to a sewing and pattern making class in Norway when young. This is a huge project and your results are amazing first time out of the gate!!!! I think it is providential it turned out the way it did - I love a hood looking vest! Cudos!

Thanks so much for your kind comments. I’m thinking I will wear it again. I probably need too lose a few pounds first so it hangs better. This may be good incentive! I appreciate you stopping by. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Always choose a pattern that is intended for the type of fabric that you want to use. Use a pattern for woven fabric with woven fabric. Use a pattern for knits with a knit fabric. When making a quilted garment keep in mind that quilting your fabric will make it a bit smaller.

Today's garment patterns are not as well written (as the ones we were buying and using in the 1960's). You should have made a tester first (to save your better fabrics for the real garment).

      @CreatewithClaudia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep, you are right. I mentioned the Muslin tester in the video because I realized I should have made that. Next time I’ll know better. Thanks for watching and the tips!
