Well there is a bypass button so you can still use it as if it’s a SM7B if you did upgrade to a higher end interface

The SM58 is gain friendly, the MVX2u can handle it just fine. Just be careful not to touch, bump the mic if you tend to get a little animated while singing metal, as it can cause little momentary spikes in the noise floor (airy/hissy sound) that can be heard in the quieter moments of your vocals. Not sure if they have fixed that yet in firmware updates since I last used it.

Great video. I'm thinking to buy SM7dB + MVX2U (instead of Focusrite 4i4 Scarlett) for a podcasting setup. My idea is to declutter the setup and make it easy to use. I'll be connecting directly this to my Sony a7iV.

This mic is a clear discrepancy of what consumer actually want vs what brands wants and what brands thought consumers want:
    1) Brand thought with so many podcast using the SM7B, if they add the Shure logo, it will be free advertising for them. The only reason I'm not upgrading to 6 of the SM7dB and bought 6 Lauten Audio LS-208 is purely because of the logo that Shure added. If I don't use it hang down, the logo will be upside down unless I open the screw and rotate it and screw it back.
    2) They beauty of the SM7B is how subtle it was, the black plate makes it look so clean, now they no longer gives you the back plate
    3) It's nice that they make the switch easier to access, but what's the point if no one even uses the switches in the first place?
    4) Build in Pre-amp 5 years too late, now entry level audio interfaces already have 69 db of gain like the latest generation Scarlett, 76 db of gain with the Rodecaster pro II/duo, 80 db of gain with mackie DLZ creator. How about studios? People will studio already have preamp like the 1073 which already have more than enough gain to power the SM7B.
    5) The mic color (shiny) and proportion just looks wrong and camera, the elongated design with the taper, just make the mic looks weird, the original SM7B already look perfect, why mess with that?
6)Here's what people actually want, we want the next generation of SM7B
-Better sound so we can upgrade our current SM7B to the next generation SM7C. Maybe neodymium magnet? Improved capsule? Better internals? Lower Noise Floor with the same sound signature?
-The wire coming out from the side, we want it to be internal so it will look cleaner on camera
-Better yok mount so it's easier to screw
-Built in wire mesh pop filter inside the cage for the capsule, perhaps something like the JZ-PF pop filter
-We want the rest to be the same, because of the MAYA effect - Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable - To sell something familiar, you must make it surprising and to sell something surprising, you must make it familiar.

    SM7dB + MVX2U

Curious - Which upgrade would YOU rather have?
USB capability like the MV7 or the SM7dB that has the built in pre-amp? Opinions???

    • @OreApampa
      @OreApampa 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I would go with the USB capability. I favour the ability to use the Shure MVX2U with other mics in future. I am a voiceover artist who travels quite a lot and being able to have such a small but powerful interface is very helpful. I don't use or have a Shure SM7B or SM7dB though. I currently have the Shure MV7 which I got specifically because of the USB and headphone functions. I sometimes use the headphone port as an AUX port and plug it straight to my camera so I have great sounding audio straight to the camera without having to add it in the audio when editing later.

Good info here. I just purchased the SM7B, it’s goin into my PreSonus Studio 68c, spec sheet on the 68c says it has a mic gain range of 80db. The gain on my 68c has to be all the way up to get the level I need using the SM7B. I contacted PreSonus and asked if this was normal because Shure says the SM7B needs at least 60db. I wanted to know why I had to have the gain all the way up on the 68c (with 80db of gain) to get the level I needed on the SM7B. One of their audio techs said it was normal and would not harm the mic or the interface. I don’t know enough about sound to understand why: if the 68c has 80db of mic gain and the SM7B needs at least 60db of gain, that’s 20db extra and I still had to have the gain knob all the way up on the 68c. I decided to try a mic booster I had (Klark Teknik) with 25db and that was enough to lessen the gain on my 68c from all the way to around 3/4. I decided to try a better mic booster so I bought sE Electronics DM2 TNT inline preamp (the KT is also inline). The DM2 has 15db or 30db of boost and 8 different load impedance settings. I found that the DM2 plugged directly into my SM7B, with 30db of boost gain and 100k of impedance was best for my voice. Shure states that the SM7B needs “at least” 60db of gain but in my opinion I think it needs at least 80db. 😎

That’s a toughie. They are both soooo good. I personally am looking the MV7plus for USB mic because of the software that comes with it. I have heard it is mindblowingly awesome. I will say though, whenever you want to do podcasts with a guest that will in with on you and not remotely appearing on your show, I go xlr. Just easier to manage two mics in person, and usb can be easier if it’s just you and your guest joins in from another location. Personally that would be the deciding factor if it were me.

With my Shure Beta 58A and and it’s output of -51dBV @ 1kHz I need about 40dBV of gain. As such a struggle to see how the Shure SM7B with its output of -59dBV @ 1 kHz actually needs more than 48dBV of gain, let alone a whopping 60. I mean, yes, it need 59dBV if you want to amplify the 1kHz signal to 0dBV, but who does that? Even on a 16 bit recording you never go higher than -12dBVFS and on a 24 bit audio interface, you can easily work with a -24dBFS signal or even -27dBFS. And in terms of Headroom, it’s a reasonable choice to actually go for -24dBFS.

It’s right on that line with up to 65db of gain in the Apollo. Not sure if you max it to the 65 if that would introduce the noise floor into your audio. If I wanted to use an Shure mic with it, I personally would get the SM7DB and flip that switch for the built in booster to give me a little head room on the interface and NOT max out your gain on the interface to keep the airy noises from getting into your vocals.
I get nervous anytime you have to “max out your faders” just to get your mic levels at the right spot. I always want to avoid maxing out on an interval whenever I can. SM7db would be my choice for the Apollo,
