    I always assumed the “diplomatic bag” was surely a phrase for sending Kosovo back in a body bag, so pretty sure he certainly did not get away ! Anyway Calvin “bless your heart” for looking on the positive side for him.

    • @sartanawillpay7977
      @sartanawillpay7977 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Diplomatic bags are sent between embassies and the home country (and vice versa) and usually contain documents and secret material. To inspect them is a violation of international law. I understood the order to send him in the diplomatic bag to involve dismemberment to get him to fit. Note:technically large duffel bags and even crates can be designated as diplomatic bags, but because Pushkin did not specify a larger container I understand his order to refer to the regular bag for documents.

    • @SwordmasterKane
      @SwordmasterKane 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Maybe - just maybe - the German version can clarify that, since General Pushkin's order at the end of "Living Daylights" in the German version translates to: "Send him with the next plane to Moscow - as diplomat's ashes."
      So: No, Koskov did not get away in my opinion. I always had the feeling that they would take him out in the back yard of Whitaker's house and just shoot him there.

      It's ambigous at best. There is nothing explicitly stating his fate. If anything, after so many people witnessing his arrest in a foreign country, I always thought that it would've been the most logical to bring him arrested. I mean, 1989 Soviet Union wasn't equally openly homicidal as 1949 Soviet Union, no? In any case, I wouldn't call it ''getting away'', as his most likely fate is a life in prison.
      Irma Bunt, on the other hand...

    • @schubertuk
      @schubertuk 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AlirioAguero2 I agree - it is very ambiguous. I just took the "diplomatic bag" as meaning that Koskov is no longer a VIP, and will be treated to a journey in the hold - before getting whatever punishment is due back home. Otherwise why not just shoot him on the spot?

    Surprised you didn’t mention Jaws’ return in the Everything or Nothing video game: After the events of ‘Moonraker’, Jaws realised that, despite what he thought he saw, Dolly didn’t actually have braces. He swore he saw braces on her teeth in Rio, but she insisted she never had any dental work done. They tried to settle down and start a normal life, but Jaws couldn’t let it go: he remained convinced about the braces and was determined to prove it, much to Dolly’s displeasure. Jaws was insistent - after all, it was their common ground, it was what brought them together. Dolly was somewhat offended: she thought he loved her for who she was and her personality, not just for her teeth. Sadly, Jaws became so ensnared in the conspiracy theory that his girlfriend had always worn braces and their removal was some sort of sinister plot that he didn’t notice Dolly had left him until she was already gone. He realised too late that it wasn’t whether her smile had braces or not that was the important thing, it was that she was smiling at him. Alone, despondent, depressed, and with only himself to blame, Jaws went back to his life of crime. He returned to the Villainous Henchman Talent Agency and was subsequently booked for a job by Nikolai Diavolo.
    Does he survive to the end of EON? Is there a little coda of him getting up and dusting himself off? It’s been a while since I played it, I can’t remember.

Thus, he was no longer of any use to Quantum and they planned to have him killed because he knew too much to live. Knowing they were out to get him, Haines decided to take the Quantum top brass down with him: he planted a bomb in the same theatre that Quantum were using to have a meeting in during a performance of ‘The Pirates of Penzance’. The explosion killed most of the senior members of Quantum and, in the resulting power vacuum, a low-ranking member called Ernst Stavro Blofeld managed to seize power and began the corporate rebranding into Spectre.
    Or maybe not, just a guess.

      Maybe, but not conclusive. Quantum was obviously supposed to be a stand-in for Spectre in the Craig universe before EON regained the rights to use Spectre only a few years ago. It is never clearly stated whether Quantum was just a smoke and mirrors name for Spectre, or was it an entirely different organization manipulated by them from the shadows. The largest number of Bond villains surviving was in the seventies...Bambi and Thumper, Mr. Mortimer, nameless I-got-a-bruhduh goon, Tee Hee (Everyone survives being thrown from a train...you really think Hinx is dead?)...perhaps Whisper, certainly Mr. "Hey for $20 I'll take you to a KKK cookout!", Lazar, Knick Knack, Jaws and perhaps Dolly if you count her as a baddie...there are others. I think EON missed a major bet when they did not join them together for a heist film ala the whole Ocean's franchise with maybe Rog with a cameo...seeing what is going on...raising an eyebrow...shaking his head, deciding life is too short, and walking away. Sherrif JW Pepper perhaps could be the foil. And PS...at the end of LALD...that is the real Baron Samedi on the train! Fleming did allow supernatural elements in his works...not many but a few...Solitaire for one and the Gypsy in FRWL who tells Bond's and Kerim's futures both of which come true.

      Nick Nack - Arrested
      Whisper - Arrested
      The Photographer - Gets away with it.
      Baron Samedi - I don't know what happens to him, actually. He might have faked his own death, might have been resurrected, might have been only a fourth wall nod to the audiences. I'm going with voodoo magic resurrection. If alive (or undead), I'm sure he'll continue to be a local problem, but very contained. Without Kananga, he doesn't have the resourced to go global.
      Jaws - Gets away with it, but finds love and stops being a threat. Although it's never actually said, I always assumed that he was somewhat mentally disabled, and heavily manipulated by his employers.

    On a different note let me recommend two films.
    First, one of the finest espionage films, 1965's "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold." Based on John le Carré's 1963 novel it stars Richard Burton and Claire Bloom. It was nominated for six BAFTAs winning four, including Burton for Best British Actor. (I make a distinction between espionage films, which are realistic depictions, and super-spy movies, like the Bond films. FWIW, my favorite Bond film is From Russia with Love.)
    Second, you should have a look at the original, 1968 Thomas Crown Affair. It is more important in cinema history, because of its innovative editing, has a great score by Michel LeGrand, is not as gimmicky, and Faye Dunaway > Rene Russo.

    • @BungleBare
      @BungleBare 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My head canon for Bond involves four continuities;
      1. The Connery Eon films or, if you jettison Thunderball, all the other Connery Eon films, plus NSNA later in his career. That way Bond being in Japan at the start of DAF, and Blofeld having plastic surgery to impersonate Henderson (to presumably have safe passage out of Japan) makes a (kind-of) sense. We know Spectre have, by this point in time, perfected voice-replication technology- so Blofeld having Henderson’s voice as well makes a kind-of in-universe sense. Especially when he retains Pleasance-Blofeld’s fashion sense (beige Nehru jacket, anyone?).
      2. Lazenby and Moore as one Bond, played by two actors. By TSWLM it’s clear that Moore’s Bond has been married, and by the pre-titles of FYEO we get confirmation that these mentions relate to the OHMSS timeline, with Tracy’s headstone. Then “Blofeld” appears, with the same neck brace as in the final scene of OHMSS. Starting off with a different continuity also explains how Bond and Blofeld haven’t met before the events of OHMSS - at the start of the film Bond’s only stated as having been tracking Blofeld, with no specific mention of any previous face to face encounters.
      3. Dalton and Brosnan. Again, one Bond, played by two actors. Place the pre-titles of Goldeneye before TLD (it’s even stated to take place in ‘86), and the timeline makes sense. Bond’s jaded attitude to the job in ‘87 in TLD could be put down to having supposedly seen Trevelyan killed the year before. After going rogue in LTK he’s eventually brought back into the fold, but had to undergo evaluations, as well as to try and impress the incoming new M.
      4. The Craig era. The issue of M appearing in this and the previous continuity isn’t an issue for me. Many of the MI6 regulars, and Felix, have re-appereared/ been recast before.
      In the second (Moore/Lazenby) continuity it’s entirely possible for Irma Bunt to have either gone to ground completely, or been killed by Bond between OHMSS and LALD. Or maybe even, like the actress herself, just died of natural causes. Whatever happened, she didn’t survive long enough to plead with Bond for her life with the promise of a stainless steel delicatessen.

    Let me just clear something up about Koskov: he’s 100% screwed. Diplomatic body bag means they’re going to “interrogate” (read: torture) and kill him before the plane lands in Moscow. Instead of getting away, he’s probably got one of the more Brutal villain deaths in the franchise.

    Shit, I didn't even knew Paul Ritter died. RIP :(
    I mostly know him from playing Dyatlov in _Chernobyl_

      He sadly passed away in April from a brain tumor at the too early age of 54. Skyfall actress Helen McCrory also passed away in April from Cancer at only 52-such a sad month.

    Something I find rather amusing about Prof Joe Butcher is that apparently the phrase "Bless your heart" is Southern slang for go fuck yourself. If this is true, when he's doing his televangelist work, he's telling Sanchez's buyers to go fuck themselves.

    I am wondering if Mr Hinx will return in a future Bond film as his end in Spectre was fairly ambiguous and the train fight was just before the third act, resulting in a really unsatisfying outcome. You would swear he was going to return for a stinger fight at the end of the film. Maybe that will be in a future film, and Batista is now a big name draw for upcoming films now.

      Agreed. Being yanked from a speeding train by your neck SHOULD be fatal, but henchpeople survive worse all the time. I was completely expecting him to show reappear in SPECTRE to go another round with Bond (which theoretically could still happen, I suppose).

      Given the film's 3rd act was being re-worked during filming, I guess Dave Bautista wasn't available when they shot that part-hence his apparent demise being a bit abrupt. Given the sequel to No time to die will almost certainly be some kind of reboot I doubt he'll be seen again though Daniel Craig obviously liked working with him as there re-teaming for Knives Out 2.

    The container Whisper falls into is described by Kananga as ‘watertight’ so I always assumed that Whisper - a character who can’t speak above a whisper, in the book due to childhood tuberculosis destroying the greater part of his lungs - is implied to suffocate.

      I think the CIA would have found him when they went through the facility once Bond had escaped [the boring admin we don't get to see in the films!]
