SPRINTER Commuter Train: Escondido to Oceanside California

  • The Sprinter is a passenger rail service operated by San Diego’s North County Transit District. It travels over the 22 mile long former Santa Fe Railroad Escondido Branchline in-between Oceanside and Escondido, California. Trains run every 30 minutes during regular hours of travel with hourly operations during early morning and late evening weekend periods. Sprinter service is provided by a fleet of 12 Diesel Multiple Units, or DMU for short. These self propelled passenger rail cars were built by Siemens-Mobility in Germany and are part of an off the shelf European family of Rail cars known as the Desiro. They are quite popular on some of the more lightly traveled passenger rail lines in Europe but the Sprinter is the only service in North America to use this type of equipment. Over the years, Sprinter has become a popular mode of public transit, seeing over 2.4 million riders in 2019. Future plans call for even more of the route to be double tracked in order to increase train frequency. In this video, we will once again revisit this unique commuter rail operation in North County San Diego, following the route from Escondido to Oceanside and back again.

    When me and my family first moved to San Diego County in late 2010 my dad and I rode the SPRINTER round trip from Oceanside to Escondido and back. We rode it during sunset and got to see the mountains and CSUSM at dusk. Now I am a student at CSUSM and my apartment is right next to the tracks, so this little railway holds a special place in my heart.
    I believe the CSUSM station is the only part of the route built from the ground up from 2005. Only grade separated station too I believe.

    I think what I find most interesting is that to avoid putting the American standard couplers, horns and bells, NCTD classified this line as a light rail, so these cars don’t really have very many modifications from their European design.

    • @CoasterFan2105
      @CoasterFan2105  2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yup. They are basically off the shelf European trains. The only major difference aside from seating configuration is the large rooftop AC units.

      There is a reason why its couplet remained. This coupler is not just a coupler but houses many connections aswell. The Desiro just has to connect or how we call it here "Kiss" another Desiro and it can go as soon as it happenes. The horn is not an off the box one by the way. Overall I hope that you guys will enjoy this little bastard because they sure useful and very compact! 😊

    I do want to mention something though. I work at Roaring Camp now and Sonora (The West Side Lumber Co Shay) is slated to be back in service by December or January. If you are planning a trip to either Central or Northern California, I suggest stopping by Felton to see the engine and capture the railroad in 4K.

    It's a pity that there isn't more public support for transit in San Diego, whose light rail rivaled the Portland MAX in 2019 total and per mile ridership and carried more trips in 2022 than any other US LRT.
    It's also a pity that SANDAG is allocating money towards making transit free before increasing Trolley frequencies. Mission Valley is getting up to 50K new residents. The Green Line needs 7.5 minute or better frequencies ASAP.

    It’s videos like these that make me think that maybe the US rail system gets a lot more flack than it deserves, sure we don’t have a Shinkansen, but should we really compare to that high a bar? Japan makes the TGVs look pathetic by comparison. If you compare the US to Germany, our rail network isn’t all that bad really, long distance trains and all. Could we upgrade speeds in places? Most definitely, but overall, it’s not as terrible as people make it out to be.
