- San Diego County’s Coaster Commuter Train is in the process of overhauling its entire fleet. In 2020, North County Transit District, the owner of the railroad, received 5 brand new SC-44 Charger locomotives, built by Siemens Mobility, to replace the original fleet of 5 F40PHM-2C locomotives. That same year, NCTD began a project to refresh every passenger car owned by the railroad. The new Chargers and first four overhauled cars, resplendent in a brand new paint job, entered service on February 8th, 2021. Throughout the rest of 2021 and into 2022, NCTD continued refurbishment of the 28 car fleet. In October of 2021, North County Transit District began a new Coaster schedule featuring 15 weekday round trips and 10 each Saturday and Sunday, in an effort to provide more consistent Coaster service throughout the day. With the new schedule in place, the railroad must use a total of 5 train sets instead of the previous 4. As a result, all trains were shortened to 4 cars in length while several cars were out of service for their overhaul. NCTD also brought the two F59PHI locomotives back into service as spare power. Let’s travel to San Diego County in early 2022 to see Coaster trains as they operate during this major transitional period for the railroad.

I Like the Coaster trains they have a really nice paint scheme though it's a Shame that they retired their F40PH-2c's but im glad that 5 of them are gonna be save and donated to The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum

Glad you are back! Very nice views of the trains. Glad the duo F59PHIs are still in service, but they probably will retire eventually since times have changed.
It's weird seeing a charger pulling bilevels. That said, would have been nice to catch the interior of coaster cars. See what they're like in all three levels in a system outside of GO.

As of May 2022, 3 cab controls cars (2306, 2309-2310) and 8 standard coaches (2201, 2502, 2401-2406) have been overhauled with several more in progress.
Are the overhauls being done in house? Or are they contracting the rebuilds out?

It's great that the F-59PHI locomotives are still in service but as of now they're running their final miles this will be their last year of service before they're replaced by the The charger locomotive what's interesting about these two F59PHI locomotives is that they have their skirting that covers the fuel tank removed and pose to other F59PHIs that have a streamlined skirting which covers the fuel tank area
Hopefully they will get good new homes upon their retirement!

My main interest here is 2309 and 2310. Notice how they have the new "Quieter" E-Bells, which you can barely tell the Chargers have them, but since Bombardier Cabs have their bells mounted in the "Goldilocks Spot", you can tell much more clearly. Though as glad as I am that these two are fully overhauled for real and not just wrapped, it's still a shame that they no longer have Reflector Strips on the front. And also, these two are the only ones expected to make it out the other side. Coaster is soon ordering awful CEM Cab Cars, which will likely result in 2301 through 2308 having their cabs deactivated once they get overhauled.
Good thing 2309 is being saved, its my favorite cabcar coaster owns as of now
It's actually likely that all of them are gonna make it now, since 2306 recently came back from the dead, and is also fully overhauled.

I am an Amtrak railfaner and love your videos.I will go to oceanside on April 3 through 8th. Can we meet in DEL MAR for some train spotting?I will take Amtrak 777 from San Diego to Los Angeles on the 9th.We could also meet on the track my train comes on in los Angeles?
I saw one of the older coaster engines sitting at the BNSF train yard at Barrio Logan. I thought that was weird.
That sound like a train horn, which is added in by an amplified oscillator at certain train rail crossings, is truly weak. It reminds me of a morning rooster announcing another sunrise, but the rooster has a bad cold.
They’re called wayside horns. But yeah they accomplish almost nothing. The whole point of a train horn is to indicate how close a train is to a crossing based on its loudness.

Do freight trains run the San Diego sub during the day at all, or is there a passenger curfew until dusk.
They do occasionally, but it's not a regularly scheduled thing.

Thanks! For now, yes. They still haven't restored ads to the level they were before they demonetized the channel. I'm hoping that's just something that will lag for a short time and then go back to normal, but I'm keeping my eye on it.

Nope. No new classification. They will just cosmetically restore it

@@colinsplaymobilchannel5032 2104 had the least amount of mechanical problems. I talked with a guy and said that they might be able to make it an NPCU for the coaches that have pass through mu cables. Nothing fully operational under it's own power though
@@Millsy852 Steve from the museum said that the F40 that has the most mechanical problems will be restored to operation. Many people, including Mike Armstrong wants 2105 to be repainted.
Where did the other locomotives that were on coaster go?
Why do the coaster sc-44s have two pipes on the long hood? And why do the surf liners not have two pipes?

That depends on a lot of things. This was shot with the Canon XF400.

2103 will be shipped to Campo by truck, and the museum needs your help. Burglars broke into the Coast Rail Services! They stole 2103’s horn, number boards and prime mover. The museum needs your help to catch those thieves and get the number boards, prime mover, and the horn.
How the f*ck did they steal the prime mover???
F40PHM-2C 2105 will become SD&A 2105 and become fully operational.
