Volvo XC40 Recharge has a true one pedal drive mode and the C40 is both longer and taller so it's not "smaller". Basically the same car in a coupé version.
It seems lately that any buttons are too many for Sandy. I have a Volvo and the minimal buttons are great - just the ones that are frequently used and need tactile feel.
I nearly bought the C40 for many of the reasons mentioned, but in the USA, Volvo only sells the twin motor versions of XC40 and C40 in Ultimate Trim level for over $60K. It only has one driving mode with both motors on all the time. It is very quick, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds but the EPA range is only 223-226 miles for XC40 and C40. Most people don't want to pay $60K for a car with such short range in the USA. If you looking for a luxury City car, it is great.
Just bought a C40 on Wednesday. Drove 220 miles to my nearest Volvo dealer to pick it up and drove it home. It might not be a great road trip car, but we stopped for
I know this is 2 years later, but check out Hertz for a used c40! They seem to have great prices. I'm unfortunately hours away from my in-state Hertz dealer ($27k), so i might go to volvo dealership to look at a higher priced ($36k) used xc40.
I do not believe you have experienced the Volvo CX40 Recharge, I have been driving this car for almost a year now and is very satisfied. The combination of physical buttons and buttons on the screen is excellent.
The car would not roll if you turn creep off. You can go in the settings and put the car on one-pedal drive and there would be no rolling. Not how the car looks Chinese when it's a Swedish design. And I think the car has a small amount of buttons. The design isn't new so the screen is a bit small. I'm glad to see Sandy say favorable things about the car. It's well built, mostly well finished too.
Geely bought volvo, The XC40 recharge is made on the CMA platform, Which geely had control over development. So it would be understandable to say it is Chinese when this is what the Chinese got. If you look up "Geely Xingyue L" Other than a few styling choices it is basically the same car just produced in china.
@@craazyy22 It's not Chinese. If anything, Geely loves Swedish engineering and even set up a company called CEVT and Lynk and Co to use Swedish engineering. It's Lynk and Co and others rebranding Swedish engineering not Volvo rebranding Chinese vehicles. Volvo did the platform work on SPA and most of it on CMA. People are under the wrong impression that the Swedish element of Volvo went away with the acquisition. No. Geely Holding may "own" Volvo but Volvo's Swedish engineering and Scandinavian design and the teams that engineer them and make Volvo Volvo have been strengthened and expanded under Geely. Volvo is fairly independent in the Geely structure. Volvo is not Chinese. Volvo is Swedish financed and backed by a very good managing parent company, Geely Holding.

Would love to see you get your hand on this type of car. Love from Sweden
I believe the XC-40 Recharge uses the Google automotive OS. I'm on my second XC-40 R-Design T5, and I obviously love the car. Might get the BEV version this fall.
Being an owner and occasional driver of the C40, I do like the ride and comfort of the interior. I do have some concerns over the software engineering in the vehicle. I have encountered numerous software defects. Volvo has delivered some updates to address defects, but I keep discovering new issues. Volvo’s US based customer service is horrible! Volvo has a lot of work to do if they intend to keep up with the others.
Thanks for this review. Although I am a Tesla fanboy, I have driven the ice XC40 T4 a lot and IMO it is a very "livable", nice vehicle. To see it come out as an EV at a reasonable price is fantastic. The small frunk is sufficient for cables and adapters, the trunk is a larger than I thought. My only gripe is the tunnel in the middle, mostly noticeable in the back seat. The platform is based on the ICE XC40, but in the EV version they stuffed the tunnel with batteries, keeping rigidity and excellent crash test results. The XC40 and possibly the C40 is definitely on my shortlist, solid cars...
I own a gas XC40 (T5 AWD), and the trunk is tiny. If you don’t fold down the rear seats, you can will fill the trunk fully doing a grocery run Other than that, very nice car
Volvo XC40 is GIMP , it uses the same Shitty Platform as the POLESTAR 2 . XC40 is nothing more than a COMPLIANCE car , built with a GAS car body on a OUTDATED bev. Platform. its too SLOW and too HEAVY.
Physical buttons for important stuff like the maximum defrost thing are absolutely necessary in colder climates where you wear gloves outdoors to not freeze your fingers off. Touch screens are fine for infotainment things though, but not the primary controls of the car.
I wish there had been time for a more in-depth review. The car does indeed have one-pedal driving. As an owner, I absolutely love this vehicle. It’s a joy to drive and own. Sandy really should have driven it on the highway.
I test drove this car with my wife a few months ago in Canada. It is very good and worth considering. I like it better than the VW ID4 and Audi Q4 e-tron (but there were none to test drive). Overall, the design is really nice, thoughtful, and well executed (like Volvos have always been). I later read the lead design engineers are women. Awesome!. Looking to the future, they need to get the battery lower (eg skateboard type rather than sharing design with ICE versions) to improve handling and space. Google has to improve its Android Automotive operating system as well. Like Sandy saw, there were only a few Apps on the screen currently. Still, I think the future is bright for Volvo.
Volvo did a tech presentation last year, last June. The plans are for every car after the C40 to be EV and built on a ground-up platform either their own SPA2 or their modified version of Geely's SEA platform called PMA. No more ICE converts for Volvo. The whole company is really embracing EVs from the software to the aerodynamics to battery development and they really want to be competitive in the arena.
Beautiful. Polestar 3 is based on the same platform, coming in October and USA-made (EDIT: Polestar 2 is based on this platform, 3 is based off of SPA2)
Polestar 3 is based on a completely different platform. This car is the CMA, not made exclusively for EVs. The Polestar 3 will be based on the SPA2 platform that's a ground up EV platform. The Polestar 3 for Europe may be made in China. The USA built one is built for the Americas.
When I considered an ev this was the first car I borrowed and it was a nice car as any Volvo is. However the range is nowhere near what is promised, small trunk for a suv, the o.s is lagging and slow charging. Tried out the options from VAG, BMW and Mercedes but first time in the Tesla M3 LR made the choice easy! Happy owner for one year in my M3 and loving the ease of ownership! Nice review. It seems Geely has its fingers in a number of European vehicles. Just think, Geely started out as a manufacturer of refrigerators before turning to making cars. I hope you do video of the Smart #1 EV, a Mercedes with Geely collaboration.
No comment on how claustrophobic the interior is? (ICE car based) and how cheap the plastics are? I kind of hated it during my test drive (for the price).
Wonder what Sandys and the Munro company thinking about the amount of different EVs we can buy in Europe vs what is available in the USA? and are European car makers not doing enough in the USA market?
Why should they bother? At the moment they can sell all they make right on their doorstep. Companies like Renault, Fiat, Opel, Citröen, Renault, Peugeot pulled out of the US market years ago, they all make EVs, setting up a full service and repair network would cost a fortune.
A friend of a friend bought a Volvo XC40 Recharge last year. It was OK in the city, but the first time they tried to take a modest trip they ended up in an unscheduled hotel due to totally nonfunctional chargers, chargers that wouldn't interface with their car and even supposed chargers that turned out to be nonresistant. They're decades long Volvo buyers and when they visited the Volvo dealer the salesman told them not to buy a Tesla because there weren't many chargers that would work with a Tesla. Lies, lies and more lies.
Why NOT buy one of these? Because next year's models, built in South Carolina, will have skateboard design instead of the retrofitted ICE model that this is, with center tunnel taking up space.THAT will be an attractive choice.
1. It was designed as a multi purpose platform, not ICE only 2. The new car will be considerably more expensive and quite a lot bigger 3. The tunnel allows a more conventional seating position in a small car, particularly in the back seat
Volvo is smart placing the charging port on the left rear. They’ll soon be able to use the world’s largest charging network, Tesla. Any company not doing this is a foolish disservice to its potential customers.
Love Volvo style and quality but not their weight. And too bad they do not have a real EV platform so far. Their current EV models, as polestar 2 lack inside room.
@@markplott4820 I think you mean they are not "practically intended". Sure, however you can guess that inside space of these cars is obstructed by ICE constraints.
@@bidon5037 Ignore Mark Plott. He takes cheap shots at Volvo and Polestar and doesn't have a clue of what he's talking about. Volvo and Polestar's ground-up EVs will be introduced end of year. Volvo plans then to introduce a new ground-up EV a year for the next several years. So talk about "compliance" cars from Volvo is nonsense.
I don’t think it’s worth while to mention fit and finish at a show. Who would not dial in their car for the show? Let’s see how the do with scale. Then look at fit and finish.
The XC40 is a nice car but it has pathetic 223 mile EPA range. It might be enough for daily commute but very limited for road trips. The limited 150kw max charge speed doesn’t help either. What’s most disappointing is that they get only 223 mile with a 78kwh battery which is awful efficiency. I would have expected more from Volvo/Geely.
Just look at it! The designers obviously didn’t give one shit about areo efficiency. It’s not surprising at all that it’s efficiency is dog crap. Course.. what else is Volvo known for except making boxes.. so I guess they’re keeping to their roots! A great way to run your company into bankruptcy as far as I’m concerned.. wouldn’t even spend 5 seconds considering this vehicle as a purchase, or anything else Volvo has shown so far. Well built.. well built crap as far as I’m concerned. But I know they have their fans.. GL to ‘em.. they look DOA in the EV world to me
Especially next to the model y built in tx with a 68kwh 4680 pack rated for 279 miles epa range in an awd very roomy cuv for less money. With more tech, quicker acceleration, better range, better charging on a better more reliable network etc. All the ice evs are doing is taking now is taking share away from their own ice vehicle sales. How long can they last I wonder. 😀
@@airheart1 Does an S60 or s90 look like a box to you? You sound like you're describing Volvos from the 1990s, not their current vehicles. The XC40 wasn't designed to be an EV. It was designed to be a crossover that could be ICE, hybrid or electric. The reason why Volvo made it an EV was to test one-pedal driving and other aspects of electric cars as well as OTA updates. A Model Y was always designed as an EV. If you follow Volvo you know that their next-gen cars are around the corner and they'll be a lot more aerodynamic. If you look at Volvo's sister line, Polestar, the Polestar 3 design was shown about a week or two ago and it has a more aerodynamic look to it. You don't have to like them. But you don't seem to know much about Volvo's plans for EVs which are, for a legacy car company, quite aggressive and forward looking and especially for a small company.
@@benjaminsmith2287 true, i do not know Volvo’s future direction. I am basing what I said, on what I see in the video. If they have significant, intelligent future designs to increase their efficiency, great! What I see here is a bad design for an EV. Your explanation of WHY they did makes sense. But, any non EV design from the ground up.. to me.. is CRAP. EVs have VERY specific and huge advantages that can be taken over ICE vehicle designs. To give those up to push out something now.. I get the reasoning.. i hate it as a consumer. You want me to buy this flawed product? When I can clearly see there are far superior options? Ok.. they are more money and I have the luxury of spending that money to get the better product.. so I’m mostly just talking about me.. but I hate these inefficient and compromised designs and listening to people tell me how ‘great’ the car is.. makes me respond with negativity. I do get there is a huge market for cheap EVs.. and they will accept these compromises.. it’s not for me. I’ll watch to see where Volvo goes in the future. And yes.. the wise crack about the Volvo boxes was about those older models I saw growing up.. I realize they have broken that mold a bit more recently.. but this XC40 design does not cut it aerodynamically for an EV unless it’s going to only spend its life on city streets
@@airheart1 They broke the "boxy" mold in 2000 with the P3 Volvos. The XC40 is an award winning car when it came out aournd 2018/2019 and it is a solid, nice car to drive in. It was made electric because Volvo needed to take something electric and did this before they could get a ground-up EV out. The bespoke EV was delayed by the pandemic. Volvo is one of the better legacy makes in terms of going to EVs and sometimes alienates their customer base. A few months ago they announced their dropping leather in new cars and their customers took to social media to trash Volvo. They're not some old-fashioned brand anymore.
It is conservative design simple and easy. No bells and whistles. I like that. Every car should be . Car should be cars not some people play it like toys. It is very serious transportation.
That is by far the ugliest UI screen with the pathetic air wents inside it. What kind of genious designed it and what was he/she thinking? It is a real challenge now to come up with something uglier.
Can't really understand or support the attempt to make an EV drive like an ICE vehicle. I love one pedal driving and would never want to go back to the ICE vehicle experience. Ten year Tesla owner and love our EV experience!
I am really disappointed with you mr Munro, why don't you let someone show the features Google has done with its software together with Volvo. You don't even understand the what happens if you touch the bottom button which send you back to the home page (the same function you have on any modern pad or phone). If you have checked out what kind of apps are available, your comments how Europeans drive sounds ridiculous. You should know that the chargepoint is on the same side/back, same as Tesla, the Volvo oncharge can receive 150 KW, perfect as Tesla now allows other makes to use there stalls. You should also understand that the XC40 is one of the most sold SUV:s in Europe. The C40 is a new version. Both models are using the same drive train and platform as the Polestar, meaning 408 Hp. You have a lot to learn, a lot has changed since you made presentations of the BMW i3, I also believe you have become a Tesla Fan Boy.
Way too many buttons, really bad screen & UI, way too low of a price point to be profitable. This is a compliance car. They're gonna make very few of these, sell at a loss, and hope regulators don't force them to make more EVs. The NIO was much more impressive, though still not entirely there. I hope you get a chance to look at an XPeng soon; from what little I've seen those look like they have potential. Regardless, thanks Sandy! The more info on these cars, the better.
Volvo plans to be all EV by 2030 and want to be half EV by 2025. They're not interested in "compliance" cars. This car is a testbed for one-pedal driving and Google automotive and OTA updates. All that is going well.
As a Brit, who has never driven an automatic in 40+ years on the road, the 'drive lever' seems silly, you press it forward to go in reverse and backwards to go forward? Really? That seems counterintuitive and liable to cause confusion to many drivers. In the UK there are regular accidents, often tragic cases where drivers crush spouses helping them park, caused by drivers of automatics selecting the wrong direction and pedal. Having to push the lever the "wrong" way seems a recipe for more deaths and numerous near misses.

Guys, he got the range wrong. It’s not 540km WLTP. It’s a thirsty vehicle and with the single motor it can do 418km.
I don't know what you mean... There's almost no buttons or dials in there at all.
woo woo woo !!!
first thing i noticed was the norwegina plates.. your an hours drive from me.
Already getting impressed by Sandy, expediting his review, but not missing any details. Only deep competency helps one do that@
He missed a lot of details actually! The car runs on google automotive, it doesn’t just have google maps!
@@carholic-sz3qv True! @MunroLive, time for Sandy to buck up!
👍
The interior dash looks like it was designed for a Lincoln.
I think Chinese xpeng is also there sir
It was, and Sandy drove it.
@@MunroLive it's video plzzzz
How does Sandy Munro not have an international driver's license? Like I would think this would be actually impossible.

Shifter. Forward for reverse and back for drive..really.?
A friend of a friend bought a Volvo XC40 Recharge last year. It was OK in the city, but the first time they tried to take a modest trip they ended up in an unscheduled hotel due to totally nonfunctional chargers, chargers that wouldn't interface with their car and even supposed chargers that turned out to be nonresistant. They're decades long Volvo buyers and when they visited the Volvo dealer the salesman told them not to buy a Tesla because there weren't many chargers that would work with a Tesla. Lies, lies and more lies.
Strange..never heard of such issues
Volvo’s EVs can use the same chargers as Ford, Kia/Hyundai, Volkswagen etc.
Why NOT buy one of these? Because next year's models, built in South Carolina, will have skateboard design instead of the retrofitted ICE model that this is, with center tunnel taking up space.THAT will be an attractive choice.
1. It was designed as a multi purpose platform, not ICE only
2. The new car will be considerably more expensive and quite a lot bigger
3. The tunnel allows a more conventional seating position in a small car, particularly in the back seat
Volvo is smart placing the charging port on the left rear. They’ll soon be able to use the world’s largest charging network, Tesla. Any company not doing this is a foolish disservice to its potential customers.
getting sea-sick as it goes over bumps.
The first car is a C40.
He looked at both the C40 and XC40
Are you in Norway? Go to Lillestrøm end check out tesla start delivering or check morning rushtrafic and count ev cars 😄😄
He was in Norway last week!
@@MunroLive 🙂👍
Meet up with TeslaBjorn
Sandy is no longer in Norway. Maybe next time.
TeslaBjorn likes to cram Banana in his rear end.
Luv these Chinese made Geeleys 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Both of the XC40s are made in Belgium and they're not Geely's. Geely has their own line of cars called Geely Auto.
Shark fin on roof? So 2010
If Volvo changes the things Sandy does not like then they have a winner!!
Lol…….
They will on the next-gen. At least some things.
Love Volvo style and quality but not their weight. And too bad they do not have a real EV platform so far. Their current EV models, as polestar 2 lack inside room.
the Volvo & Polestar are both COMPLIANCE cars.
I dont care for telsa auto open charging port
Pushbopen like our previous GMVolt was good enough
HEY GOOGLE
It is conservative design simple and easy. No bells and whistles. I like that. Every car should be . Car should be cars not some people play it like toys. It is very serious transportation.
That is by far the ugliest UI screen with the pathetic air wents inside it. What kind of genious designed it and what was he/she thinking? It is a real challenge now to come up with something uglier.
What you saw is just the Google apps screen. If he pressed the large button below the screen he would have entered the main UI, which is pretty nice.
The nio It's bigger than the XC40
Great looking car. Another one to take sales away from Tesla
Zero chance of that Lester, instead it'll eat into their own ice segment sales. Death by a thousand self inflicted wounds for legacy oems now.
Paul , every Tesla model outsells the Volvo BEV.
styling is way better than tesla, but interior is not that great. I would have thought the Swedes could turn that round into a class-leader
Dump the cough dude !!!
Can't really understand or support the attempt to make an EV drive like an ICE vehicle. I love one pedal driving and would never want to go back to the ICE vehicle experience. Ten year Tesla owner and love our EV experience!
Do a review on Porsche Taycan Sir
Very weak report.
What's the point?
You can forget about it.
Goggle is CRAP , they dont know autos.
TESLA makes the WORDS best Controls & Infotainment.
This was just a brief, not detailed, first impression. Very clearly stated.
@@markplott4820 lol Tesla fanboy
First!
I really wasn’t that impressed with the nio either ..
NOPE I want switches and knobs for stuff. This "all screen" push is annoying.
Just know, you are not in the majority.. and the future of everything, is going to annoy you then.. I’d recommend you get used to it.. or be ready for a lot of annoying devices and machines in the rest of your lifetime
@@airheart1 every car channel says that all screen is horrible... sure I'm "not" the majority. Some things need tactile feedback, screens can't do that.
@@airheart1 I am fine with the screen, but the majority definitely seems to prefer the buttons and switches
@@no-eb2xx well guess where the future is going dude.. maybe in your world that’s preferred.. old school.. guess what EVs are.. not old school. Ever watch a sci fi ANYTHING? Where do you think shit’s headed? Ever use a modern cellphone?
