Pilot Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control - Description and demonstration for Volvo owners

  • Pilot assist is a semi-autonomous driving feature that uses radar guided cruise control to control speed and maintain a set distance along with steering the wheel. It still requires you to keep your hands on the wheel but reduces workload.
    If you use this effectively it will help for long journeys. It can also help in reducing workload while with potential distractions like your infotainment system.
    The video is shot in an XC40 Recharge with the Google infotainment system but an explanation of how to do this in the Sensus infotainment system is also included.
    CORRECTION: Thanks to viewers for mentioning this, and it should have been better explained in the video. Spaces and distance with the cars in front are controlled by time. They will therefore increase in distance with increased speed

    04:42 - Increase/Decrease set speed
    05:19 - Increase/Decrease following distance

      Yay! Thanks Dennis that is so great to hear. Apart from just cruise, Infotainment screens can sometimes be a distraction. Often as I’m driving there will come a need when I have touch the infotainment screen. Eg. music playing and I don’t want voice control to interrupt and I want to find a channel. Here is how I do it now -
      I hit pilot assist so the car is centered and spacing with traffic and then do that task. This way you are allowing the pilot assist to keep you safer during distraction or higher work load. Hope that helps thanks for commenting.

      Thanks so much and also thanks for adding the info on increments too. One of the other things I also forgot to mention is that in case anyone is using this in a recharge with brake energy switched on, please make sure your foot is on the accelerator when switching off because the car slows down fast because one pedal controls brakes and acceleration. It becomes second nature if you use one pedal a lot but new EV drivers should be aware of this.

    Nice demo of Pilot Assist functions. The horizontal bars in adaptive cruise control refer to the time interval to the vehicle in front, not the car length.

    • @JebRevsUp

    Today we have 2024 and the system hasn’t already changed. meanwhile the majority of other cars setting the high speed at adaptive control automatically from traffic sign recognition, it is neccessary to set it at Volvo manually with the left button. And the travel assist is at least one level behind VW ID 7 Mustang Mach E and BMW I 5.

  • @terenceharper5612

    Love your videos. Driving my my wife's Late 2022 XC 60 B6 Inscription on road trips as we switch drivers I find Adaptive and Pilot Assist cruise control functions work fine so long as traffic is minimum and the road doesn't curve or go up less than gradual inclines, but is there a way to just have TRADITIONAL cruise control again, or am I stuck with the adaptive cruise control at a minimum?

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Terence unfortunately on the Google system as long as you have pilot assist and adaptive then there is no traditional cruise control. You only get that if the car doesn’t have pilot assist.
      By the way, in case you haven’t tried this yet. The latest version of software allows you to switch between pilot and adaptive using the side arrows. You mentioned curvy roads. This might help switch to adaptive if you know the pilot assist won’t handle the upcoming curves and switch back for a straight road.

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Adaptive cruise starts at 20 mph minimum and pilot assist starts as low a 9 mph. However it is not really designed for stop start traffic conditions. Ideally you need traffic moving and reasonably spaced. Thanks for comments.

    Can you use adaptive cruise control in combination with the speed limiter?
    I just took a test drive and I could not activate the cruise control. As soon as I took my foot of the pedal the car would slow down.
    The speed limiter did work but was quite aggressive.

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael my pleasure, glad you are finding them helpful. Yes the two arrow buttons to the right and left toggled between pilot assist, adaptive cruise or cruise modes. Now you have to use the center display to toggle between the two.
      Many of the cars only got android automotive and mild hybrid on the 23 model so the buttons are still there. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @kevinwang9191 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m very disappointed that the functionality of the 4&5 buttons (arrows to left&right) has been removed. It made no sense to have two dummy buttons there and the Volvo manual is still showing the functionality for switching cruise control, adaptive cruise and pilot assist by pressing those buttons.
      What a bug!!

  • @kevinwang9191

    Thanks for the demo of Pilot Assist on the XC60.
    I hope the information was correct. The 4&5 buttons are no functioning on the AAOS for selecting between Cruise Control, Adaptive Cruise and Pilot Assist. The 4&5 buttons are FAKE buttons on such an obvious place. Unbelievable! So annoying!

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin yes the controller is the same part used on the 2021 cars and the sensus system. It is used on that car but doesn’t do anything on the Google system.
      Many people who have owned Volvos previously like you also prefer having the choices selected using side buttons. I can see why that might be a little irritating.

  • @prisol
    @prisol ปีที่แล้ว

    super helpful Jebbie. Is it ok to put pressure on the steering wheel at the bottom of the wheel rather than at 10 and 2 o'clock to keep the pilot assist on, or does pilot assist not like that?

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes no problem at all. The steering wheel needs to just feel a little pressure. However be aware that it can switch occasionally to switching steering assist off if it loses the markings in the road. Make sure that you have enough control on the wheel even if holding lightly. Enjoy your car.

    • @prisol
      @prisol ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JebRevsUp thankyou. one more question: in heavy traffic, does the car come to a stop by itself and starts moving again once the traffic starts to flow, or do you have to intervene and override it each time?

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The system will come on as low as 9 mph to switch on and it will bring the car to a stop. However it does go into standby and requires you to intervene to restart. It is not really something I personally use in heavy traffic.
      Typically I use on almost every drive if I ever touch the infotainment screen. This way the car is keeping me safe in a distraction. Secondly in moderate traffic that is well spaced and moving well. Lastly anytime I’m tired or driving home late at night.
      It is not FSD so although I do love it and use it often I also urge caution about using in heavy traffic. Hope that helps and thank you again for commenting.

    • @JebRevsUp

      Overall I found that if the lanes are well marked and curves are not too aggressive then it does a very good job keeping you centered.
      It is important to still keep your hands on the wheel because there are time that markings can cause it to bounce. It is semi autonomous but still effective and useful. Thanks for watching

    Just one thing is not clear based on the video: will pilot assist work when you hold the steering wheel with one hand, or you really need two hands on the steering wheel, otherwise pilot assist will disengage? If the latter, I couldn't use pilot assist as I regularly steer with one hand on highways.

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello, yes you can hold it one hand. The steering just needs to feel a little back pressure from time to time to know you are there. If you hold it without any movement it will give you a warning. Push against gently and the warning goes away. Thanks for watching

      The sensus system had all three for those with pilot assist. On the android automotive system you only have pilot assist and adaptive along as that system is installed. If you don't have pilot assist then you will have standard cruise instead.

  • @prisol
    @prisol ปีที่แล้ว

    • @JebRevsUp
      @JebRevsUp  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have to admit I do agree with you on this one. I quite like being able to change between adaptive cruise control and pilot assist directly on the steering wheel.
      The only real advantage I can think off is that I’m sure people have accidentally put on adaptive when they meant to put on pilot assist.

As of 2023 the 360 camera comes in plus and ultimate models but pilot assist is only ultimate models as standard but you can get an option for this in some other models as part of driver assistance optional package.
