I've been waiting for this video ever since you gave us a lil teaser on instagram! Scape looks great! Biotopes are one of my fav aquascapes and it's really awesome to see a native scottish aquascape! Do you know what kind of fish frys those are? Curious of what sort of fish can be found in a scottish river. Awesome video as always!
woah that water is cloudy. hopefully it clears up with time? what would happen if you kept the soil and plants but added tap water and dechlorinated it? would it survive?
We didn’t take the aquarium home we just used stuff around the river and put it back afterwards, I don’t think I communicated that well in the video 😅 it would probably work if you did that too honest 👍
We didn’t notice anything in the tank but we did create an ecosphere a few months ago and there were loads of little critters in there! Video is on our channel!!
You would need to know what kind of rock and wood it was and what affect it would have on water perimeters but yeah you could with the right hardscape 👍
great concept, i like the understatement and authenticity, it's what the aqua scape scene is lacking imo. bit stuffed the end result maybe (compared to the actual biotope). did you just scrap it after making the video or did you take it home? could have given it some finishing touch. would really like to see a later version of this.
Thank you! The tank was just set up there and then on the river bank and then everything was put back including all the fish. We wouldn’t have been able to carry it back. I would like to keep some native fish species in the future though 👍
Thank you! Plan on doing more next summer, don’t know where this summer went 😅 I’m not 100% but believe they could be young Trout, Perch, Bream or Salmon. Hard to tell when they’re that small
I’m sure Scottish water were fined for raw sewage leaking into the Clyde so maybe not that river 😂 In general I wouldn’t recommend taking any plants, woods or rocks from a river to create a tropical tank unless you know how the materials are going to react over time. This was just a wee experiment to see if we could create a realistic looking aquascape with materials found in Scotland. All materials were put back after the filming was done, I didn’t keep any of it. The actual glass tank in this video is now a nano marine tank haha
yes you can. and the aquarium will probably do much better and last much longer due to the abundance of microorganisms wich will help balancing the ecosystem
@@testtest-ry7qh really. Iv been thinking about doin one of those type tanks for one of my Betta fish. We have a lake right up behind us so I thought it be fun to do with my son but was scared I'd kill my fish. So would u suggest using fresh water tho rather than the lake water ? Thats the only thing I'm nervous about
@@ErinJoy-sh2qw You can use either but I would rather use fresh water and not carry lake water all the way home. Make sure there is no chlorine in the water though. And maybe test ammonia and nitrate of the tapwater before adding fish depending on where you live. With lake water i wouldn't worry so much as long as the lake is not polluted. Edit: instead of doing water test just wait for two weeks or so after setup before adding fish. The plants will clean the water.
@@ErinJoy-sh2qw also check out walstad method with sand capping. Father fish youtube channel has videos explaining how to do it. You don't need to put any additives into the soil. I only had to add store bought fertilizer tablets after about a year as some plants where showing nutrient deficiencies.

We didn’t keep the tank set up, we put everything back. It was just a demonstration of what a wild tank would like in Scotland.
Have you notice any copepods or other small critters in tank apart from the fry?

Any idea what kind of fry they are?
Still unsure, could be bream, sticklebacks or potentially brown trout but maybe a bit too small for that. Likely sticklebacks I would say

Personally I would mix store bought fish with all this wild stuff but you could definitely add some local fish
So are you telling me i can just go to the river clyde and find all this and just add shop tropical fish and save a fortune?
