    Just gonna throw an idea out there before I even reached the half-way mark... couldn't the "islands" be floating on a much denser gas than air?I mean, we know of quite a few relatively heavy gasses on which many solid objects can float. Mercury is denser than iron, so maybe there's a layer of mercury vapour or something? The vespids would likely be adapted to breathe this much more toxic atmosphere, and if I remember correctly they need rebreathers outside of their home planet which could support this. Whatever mineral the landmasses are made of could be very porous rock like pumice containing deposits of CO2 or something like that. Considering that the vespids have exoskeletons they could be much lighter than most endoskeletous creatures and thus run a smaller risk of crushing the ground as they walk around and could build less dense buildings. Whatever gas they breathe out could be lighter than the air they breathe as well, who knows? Itf it isn't it wouldn't be a stretch to say that it'd mostly fall off the sides of the landmasses, forming lakes and rivers as it flows towards the edges. Pretty cool.

    • @dapperchap572
      @dapperchap572 ปีที่แล้ว

      More likely GW are rubbing in the fact that ripped off an art work of Roger Dean for the Tau. Look at the cover of an old game called Brataccas. You look at that and tell me they didn’t base Fire Warriors of of that. The floating islands would be a reference to Deans main works which feature heavily floating islands.

    Since Gas giants have extremely dense atmospheres it does make the idea of a floating rock more plausible than on Earth for example. If the rocks were filled with cavers of hydrogen (and I mean composing primarily of hydrogen) as well as having a very thin crust the amount of lift produced would be greater within a dense atmosphere as the compared to something like Earths atmosphere. They would be like giant ships on the water. Now I have no clue as to the maths needed in order for that to actually work but on the hypothetical, it could be possible.

    • @toomanyaccounts
      @toomanyaccounts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the ethereal to a large degree dismissed tales of demons as nonsense. later on there has been more acceptance that there is something but the tau largely refuse to believe in psykers etc. Farsight got pissed because he did find the ethereal were doing things that weren't good for the tau such as limiting the tau life span to 40 years on average but he believed the greater good was for the greater good of the tau society. the etherals either use pheromone or are psykers of some sort but the problem is other psychic races when encountering the etherals do not detect them as a psyker.

    Just so you know. Color of vision has almost nothing to do with the atmosphere. It depends of the wavelength of the light. We evolved to see the visual spectrum because the sun produces primarily yellow light. This is why yellow is right in the middle of the visual spectrum. So it is entirely possible that the vespids also lived around a yellow star and thus developed vision in the visible spectrum. Now why we see colors as we do has to do with the cones in our eyes and how they interact with our brain which is an entirely different topic which i am not as familiar with.

  • @SiegeTF

    They flap their wings rapidly enough for the buzzing to resonate with the crystals. That's very, very, very fast for the sound to reach the crystals on the ends of their guns.
    Gas giants tend to have much higher gravity than Earth, so they probably consider 'average' gravity to be very low.

    fun fact about the mantis shrimp, it has 12-16 different photo receptors. Which would be more impressive than the human number of 3. They're also terrible at distinguishing colours(rgb) than other animals, it's thought as far as I am aware that they would experience some specific "colours"(specific bandwidths of light)than a stupid large range of "colours".

  • @complex314i
    @complex314i 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    To make the floating Islands work, we need to work within the more classical definition of gas giant. Not just Jupiter and Saturn like planets, but the ice giants like Uranus and Neptune need to be considered. The interior of these ice giants is theorised to be a high pressure ocean of water and ammonia. Since we have a fluidic surface, rather than gas down to an extreme depth, island need only be lighter than the liquid, not lighter than air.

    tbh a gas wouldn't need to be too much lighter than oxygen to keep an island up, since gas giants seem to have multiple layers of gases in various densities, so an island could in theory float on a layer of denser gas like an iceberg on water.

  • @Reddotzebra
    @Reddotzebra 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The ironic thing with the mantis shrimp is that while it can see a much broader part of the spectrum than us, it probably can't really see millions of colours more than us.
    It's just really really specialized at (as I recall reading but may be remembering entirely falsely) seeing the differences generated by small variance in incoming electromagnetic radiation.
    That is to say, in picking out things to om nom nom on from the background of colourful marine life that it cannot om nom nom, and then murdering and devouring said unlucky little bastard in the blink of an eye.
    They are a bit like the Tyranids in that regard, just with less logistics.

    The Vespids appreciating the Greater Good is not that far fetch if you think about a lot of insect culture. Ants, bees, wasps, hornets, insects that make colonies all work for the betterment of the colony, each other, and the queen. The Etherals can be an easy analogy for the Queen, and he basic tenets of the Greater Good mesh well with colony life.

    To the wings controversy, its always looked to me like vespid wings have some kind of jet function. They have those tube-shaped structures on them.
    As to the gas giant controversy, probably just an annotation from an unenlightened scribe working for 3rd or 4th hand accounts. Vespid the planet could have a ring, like saturn, except that it has a stable atmosphere with asteroids in it.
    Warhammer is more fun when you try to make the lore work instead of just saying its dumb.

    Do you tease everyone like this??? A TWO week vacation AFTER announcing the lore video that I've been waiting for since I discovered your channel! Why couldn't you have just gone off quietly without any fanfare? This is utter pain.

    Thanks for the video, Arch- I really love your lore videos! And enjoy your vacation (unless it’s code for “Tau Ethereal Gas Rehab”- actually, if it is, then enjoy that, too!). By the way- where can I get some of that gas?😉 =][=

    My guess for the Vespid`s instant obeying of the Tau based off of the theory of them being seeded by the Old Ones and is that they were "programmed" by the old ones to accept the commands and ideology of the first sentient race to establish peaceful communication with them.

    One could assume the gas giant is consisted of heavier unbreathable gas atmosphere, which is traversible by flying through it to next rock that contains the crystals which creates gravity field to hold lighter breathable gas atmosphere, while also creating repulsive field to ensure the rock doesn't hit on other rock with crystals.
    There is likely plant life that processes the unbreathable gas winds that pierce the atmosphere into breathable, similar to atmospheres most organisms in 40k breath.
    Then the insectoid external carapace offers great protection against hostile gravity forces, similar to deep-sea invertebrates, which usually remain similar as the organisms on shores and on ground, organisms with internal skeletons tend to be more jelly or muscle than bones in deep-sea.

    i think you mis understand why the mantis shrimp is amazing, and how vision works, it has nothing to do with enviroment, it has to do with the types of photoreceptors Most people have three types of light-detecting cells, or photoreceptors, which are sensitive to red, green and blue light. But the mantis shrimp has anywhere from 12 to 16 different photoreceptors in its midband.

    You know, the second possibility for the Vespid is that they aren't quite as eager to "join" the Tau, but that their goal, initially, was to take over...which is either in progress or collapsed over the years...

    Vespids are actually my favourite race, as a Tau player I love how unique they are compared to their allies, and speculation of what exactly keeps them so ferverent in belief to the Empire aside, I admire how the Tau are a confederation of different species working towards a greater goal together.
    Too bad the Ethereals are whack
