The Replacements always had my attention based on the concept alone, so it was pretty exciting to dive back into a show I haven't seen in such a long time. So today let's take a look at The Replacements, see what it was, what happened to it, my opinions on the show and more!

Yeah, plus I kinda doubt that they would ever ask for "A mom that is a super spy and a dad that is a daredevil!"
More likely than not they just asked for a cool and loving mom and a sweet fun dad. Most times I don't remember them asking for specifics at least.
It was more the "GIve us a trainer that really want to win!" or "This teacher doesn't like teaching! Can we have a teacher that cares about his subject!" etc.
So, I am guessing the uncle just found a couple that was nice, loving, wanted to adopt and had some uniqe jobs that the kids would find cool *shrug*

This show was my jam back in the day! The expository theme tune was as catchy as heck, and I loved how consistent it could be. For example, after Todd insists that "George Stapler" was a president, the school stays as "George Stapler" for the rest of the series!

I liked this show; it had some interesting points of view. For example, the episode where Riley replaces a teen idol with someone more average in the hopes that people will stop caring about trends. The replacement turns out to be... herself. And everyone imitates her, which she doesn't want. In the end, though, she realizes that imitating someone else is a valid form of self-expression. I came into the episode with that point of view already (I was already like 18 when it was airing), but I was surprised it went there.

    • @milic5749
      @milic5749 2 ปีที่แล้ว +96

That's really cool. A lot of shows I watched did episodes about trends, and they always had the same message: "Following trends will make you unhappy, so instead you should BE YOURSELF(tm)!" I've seen that plot so many times I'm actually shocked that any typical-looking kids' show had a different take on following trends.

    A few things of note:
    1. That connection you made to The Fairly Odd Parents is not surprising since the show's executive producer is Jack Thomas, who was the associate story editor for that series from seasons 2-5. Many voice actors from that show (mainly Grey DeLisle Griffin,Daran Norris, and Tara Strong) were also in this show.
    2. I'm surprised you didn't mention how season 2 switched up the episode runtime. Season 1 was mostly episodes with 2 11 segments episodes with a few specials. Season 2 basically reversed this and had many episodes be 22 minutes with only a few 11 minute episodes sprinkled in.
    3. Scott Peterson, the story editor for this series, would later be story editor for seasons 2-4 of Phineas And Ferb, story editor for Milo Murphy's Law, and showrunner for The Last Kids On Earth.

One thing I like to note that this show did, was that they had the classic "brain swap" trope in one episode, but they did it better than 99.9% of the other times I've seen it. K and Dick swap minds, BUT they don't fall into the cliche of Dick speak with K's voice and vice versa. Instead, the voice actors tried to imitate each other's voice! So you had Kath Soucie doing her version of Dick (including a bad impression of K) and Daran Norris doing K's accent. A very much appreciated performance.

Learning that the author is a writer of children's books makes a lot of sense. I've found the show to have a good premise, but run the risk of having plot holes and contrivances as well as the risk of overstaying its welcome. Both of which are narrative downfalls I don't really see as much in children's books. That being said, it definitely could have been a whole lot worse, and the fact that the Replacements still managed to be pretty good exceeded my expectations.

This was one of the biggest bait and switches back in the day. This was 2006, we were riding high off the premieres of American Dragon, Juniper Lee, Ben 10 and, of course, Avatar a year earlier, and Disney was like "you won't believe what this next show is" in June, 2006 and my brother, sister and I tuned in to find out what this mystery cartoon was. They hyped it up as their next big cartoon. Then... it was just a show about kids with a phone that can swap people.
Mind you, it's not a bad show, but it's not an action cartoon. It occupied the same space of hyperbolized reality as, say, Simpson's. No superheroes, no aliens, no magic, no swords, no robots. It was an eccentric personality of the week.
And that's not a bad thing, but don't advertise it and hype it up with mystery, especially with Kim Possible and Teen Titans ending.

I remember the characters being mostly likeable as they were going through struggles and just wanted some help from adults. The episodes probably followed a similar format to the Fairy Odd Parents where the main kid characters, Todd and Riley replaced someone in their lives with a near “better” person only to find out that the old person had a valid reason for doing things the way they did, I say probably because I don’t really remember that much of flow of how the episodes went.
The comedy was good, I think one of my favorites was when the traditional looking geeky character Shelton is revealed to be attractive if his glasses are removed, then Todd tries on his sister to see if it’s the same with her but NOPE she’s just a geek.
I also really liked (spoilers) the revel Conrad, the men who facilitates the replacements, is in fact Todd’s and Riley’s uncle, which just a nice idea and explains why he helped them so much
So yeah, while I didn’t watch it all the way from the first to the last episode or can say that I think of this show often I still think that its good.

The Replacements was teased leading up to that major crossover episode Disney Channel did "That's So Suite Life of Hannah Montana" which had kid-me thinking they were taking that one-off special into a whole tv show. Like a series of random Disney Channel characters showing up on other shows or teachers would be swapped (replaced). So I was surprised (and a little disappointed) to find out it was a new IP.

As much as I loved the show, I think it ended where it needed to. I have seen shows never get enough time and I have seen shows that go on for too long. Would more episodes be nice? Sure, especially since it stars an adopted pair of twins. I think that is a HUGELY under represented kids demographic. That being said, how it wrapped up and ended is what I wish most if not all shows strive for.

Something that I never thought until this video. (probably because I was 9 when it came out) with every replacement they made, there was a reason to appreciate the growth from dealing with the original person. EXCEPT, they were given a family that loved unconditionally as one of their own. Just so they would never have to feel that rejected, unlovable loneliness ever again.

Specifically in regards to how they both take a crush on a popular blond boy to weird levels of intensity and said blond boys have very different reactions to this. I remember getting bored by this show as a kid, mainly because it never really went anywhere with its premise. It just got stale real quick that every episode was formatted the same; person is bad at job, Riley or Todd replace them, stuff seems good until it’s not and finally the person they replaced returns and it’s back to the status quo. It just felt like everything was stagnant and formulaic in the world of The Replacements and honestly, if I remember correctly, some of the people they replaced were just genuinely incompetent at their job and shouldn’t have been brought back once their replacement ended up not working out. Though that’s a lot of cartoons so I’m not sure why it stuck out so much to me specifically with this show, idk man. Maybe the fact each episode in season 1 was two 10 minute episodes that were basically the same story made the repetition more obvious? I also feel like the lesson of each episode was the same while other shows with a formulaic story structure usually shake up the takeaway for each episode.
I’m sure I’d like the show more today as the art is pretty good and I recall the show being decently funny, but the repetitive nature of the show might be why it ended up not getting picked up for a third season and why not a lot of people have especially fond memories of the show, only passively remembering it as that one okay show they saw as a kid.

...I honestly didn't expect this rather episodic series to end with such a lore-heavy episode.
...Also, am I the only one who is a little bit creeped out that their _biological uncle_ - rather than raising the kids himself - decided to lowkey stalk them until he was able to open up an impossibly huge and overreaching powerful company, where he could effectively play "fairy-godfather" for these kids' every need...and also manipulated the circumstances to teach them life-lessons?
I mean...It feels like parenting with extra (unnecessary) steps.
Think about it; this guy is paying a pair of complete strangers to pair-up and raise his brothers' kids for him.
