Safe to say that the original Gotei 13 were products of their time, chaos and war. Them gradually disappearing and being replaced by a more lawfully controlled form in a more quiet era. It's telling how Yamamoto describes himself as a monster that should never return, he clearly saw just how unabashedly uncontrollable and viscous they once were.
It’s going to make them all the more dangerous when we see them in the hell arc. I can’t imagine how crazy kubo will go with their new designs as residents of hell.
Kubo is an absolute madlaad for making such amazing character designs for characters that appear in one episode, anyone knowing even a little about character design, which is a little more than I do would know exactly how much work goes into it that really inspiring from an artist, I hopethey show up in the hell arc

When Yhwach considers you a bunch of ruthless killers, you KNOW you are dealing with a bunch of DEMONS. Which makes it very fitting that they are most likely going to be the villains of the Hell arc!

She oulived them because for 1 none of them actually challaged or defeated her to gain the title except Zaraki and 2 she also outlived them because she chose to stop fighting and become a healer
It’s because she gave up her position of Kenpachi after her first fight against Zaraki. It then passed from captain to captain until zaraki killed his captain n claimed it
I mean the old gotei 13 is said to be more powerfull but they are not even close to some of the new captains like zaraki, shunsui or captain aizen. It's said in CFYOW that zaraki is the strongest purest shinigami to ever exist. That means he is stronger then yama aswell. And the old yama might be stronger then "young" yama as only their appereances change not their actual skills as they have more experience as they get older. And zarakis bankai upgrades his feats even more. For aizen it's clear that with ks almost no shinigami can defeat him other then ichigo which hadn't seen ks. So the old gotei isn't close to the new gotei in str wise.

Yama still technically has the strongest and oldest bankai. No amount of spiritual pressure can simply negate the full power of his bankai which can destroy the soul society

Only ichibei said that when he existed bankai wasn't called bankai. And we didn't even see kenpachi's bankai at it's best. We just saw a little fraction of it cus it ripped his arms. And it wasn't even true bankai nor mastered (normal bankai). So to make assumptions that the old gotei 13 is stronger which we've seen no feats is just brainrot. They bearely beat yhwach and it wasn't even them it was yama and sasakibe.

Then there’s also Byakuya and Toshiro who had help him fight Gerard. Toshiro broke Hoffnung while kenpachi chipped it. I’m not making assumptions compared to Kenny I’m comparing the old gotei to Shunsei. Juha compared them to current gotei thirteen, meaning majority of them were weak, that probably includes past captains like gin and Kaname. So soi fon, Kensei, Rose, Shinji, etc. they probably scaled to post training byakuya, Renji, Rukia, and fully matured toshiro in TYBW Most of them were battled hardened captains who probably loved fighting like kenpachi does. The original Gotei is one of my favorite concepts in Bleach. Yama collected a bunch of murderers and somehow convinced them to work together. I wonder if he or Unohana killed any of them themselves.
The reason why Yachiru didn't age was because she spent alot the time after the thousand year blood war not fighting, it was confirmed confirmed that the fight between her and kenpachi happened before s thousand year blood war, so after s thousand years she hasn't battled and used her spiritual pressure. Characters that use their spiritual pressure alot physically age more. Kenpachi for example looks older than Yachiru Uhohana.

Yes, Squad Zero predates the thirteen court guard squads. Ichibe is millions of years old and was the first to obtain Bankai. Oetsu is likely just as or almost as old as him as he is the one who made the Zanpakuto. Similarly, Senjumaru made the shihakusho, something they all wear (tho I imagine that her promotion took place within the last 2k years since it seemed as tho she knew Yama personally from her interaction with Yhwach). Whaddya bet Yamamoto woulda been squad zero if he hadn’t been the head captain? Squad Zero members’ sole requirement seems to be history rather than power. They were the first person to obtain Bankai, the people who made the Zanpakuto, shihakusho, healing Kido (kaido), and artificial soul (not mod soul). Strength just happens to be an addition. By all technicalities, Yamamoto also made history. He created the thirteen court guard squads and the Shino academy, both of which are also the history of the soul society. If he hadn’t placed his duty as the leader of the organization, I bet he’d have been offered to be a member of Squad Zero. Which begs the question of what Kuruyashiki made (can’t remember honestly). Similarly, I think that Tenjiro became a member of Squad Zero after the formation of the thirteen court guard squads. He taught Unohana healing before his promotion, and we can assume that he was promoted shortly after he created it. Let’s assume he took over as captain for Chikiri. With a promotion to squad zero, it leaves an opening. Shortly after, Unohana clashes with Kenpachi and decides to create the healing corps. Thus, she takes over Tenjiro and Chikiri’s old squad while leaving squad 11 either vacant or in the hands of a lieutenant or someone else she deems competent (aka the 2nd Kenpachi). This creates an appropriate timeline for both of them. That aside, yes, there’s no doubt in my mind that the entire first generation is in hell

Actually it kinda did, though we don't know what it looked like when Kirio Hikifune ran things. Yet, when Senjumaru ran things it was definitely more like the research and development department we think of. However, you gotta remember, Kirio is the creator of artificial souls so she had to have some kinda laboratory capable of producing that.
Tite Kubo revealed not too long ago that Senjumaru created the research and development squad she was the head leader of it with Hikifune, Kisuke, and Mayuri as members

I do think kubo will be continuing with the hell arc by the end of the TYBW anime, and him revealing these characters is him possibly teasing the villians of the arc, like imagine if he continues it and we find out the main group of villians this time are the the 13 original members of the gotei 13 along with a few other notable characters like ukitake, but they are all corrupted by hell or something like szayelaporro when they showed him
I dont think just original 13 are down there in hell. I also think noble clans member that split the soul king are in hell also. They would definitely be some of the strongest character we have seen.
32:04 We know that, canonically, Kirio was Captain of Squad 12 over 110 years before the start of the series and was promoted to just shortly before Aizen created the Visord. Tenjirō and Senjumaru seem to have connections with Retsu and Mayuri respectively. So maybe Squad 0 only consisted of Ichibē and Ōetsu at the time?
I didn't really think much of it. But rukia in beginning said " goatei 13 were around to protect the world " then Yamamoto said " the goatei 13 are here protect the soul society " .he doesn't say rhe worlds. Kubo is not a mangaka but a musician😊
Most definitely, we will be seeing them again in the Hell arc. While I cannot wait I hope it doesn't eat into any other potential returning characters.
I think we need to consider the context of the original gotei 13 being "blood thirsty killers." Yes, they were products of their time and were most definitely less civil compared to the current gotei 13, but they were at a time of war and we hear them being called blood thirsty killers by Yhwach, their mortal enemy. I feel like if we were to see them and get to know their characters, they would be a lot more nuanced than the psycho murderers they are viewed as by the community.
While the reiatsu level is a clear factor, there could actually be another reasons. I think Yamamoto and Unohana went downstairs because they used to be the most prominent members of a group of murderous criminals. Szayelaporro must have been terrible as a human and Ukitake survived his illness by a severed piece of the god that the soul reapers had killed and mulitated. He lived for centuries off of the Soul society's original sin.
You touch on Unohanas youthful appearance being either some soul society skincare regime, or wrinkles fearing her, but perhaps, maybe her zanpaktou has something to do with it, considering its powers encompass life and death, and growing old is closwly linked to death.
Though in the 12 division the research and development hasn't been established Kirio came from that division but she invented and developed the artificial souls So despite not being established experements and research was likely a common practice at the very least
Kumoi and Kumoi are not related, Kumoi in the original Gotei is 久面井， the other Kumoi is 雲井. and despite not being a Shiba, Obana Danjiro does have the Shiba Crest(the swird on the front of Kuukaku's outfit and Ganju's pants) on his Zanpakuto
I think the Onmitskudo existed before the Gotei 13 and under the control of the Shihoin Clan. I think that's why Yamamoto recruited Chika Shihoin for his first Gotei 13, but not a representative of any of the other Great Noble Clans. Furoufushi Saito reminds me less of Riruka and more of a combination of Kirio Hikifune and Hiyori Sakuragaki, which to me implies a common ancestor for both these later characters. Given the way Hiyori treated Capt. Hikifune as a mother-figure it's not too much of a stretch to suggest that they're indeed blood relatives. The only other character she reminds me of is an older version. Entetsu Kumoi doesn't appear to me to have a lipless mouth and yellow teeth, but rather he seems to be wearing a golden, tooth-shaped mouth guard to protect his real teeth. And his weapon is a kanabo (a metal club), not a katana encircled by ringlets. There is precedent for retirement from the Gotei 13 without arrest: Ginjirō Shirogane and Seinosuke Yamada both had second careers after having "retired" (or "taken an extended leave of absence" from which they never plan to return).

Specifically, the fact tjhat the Onmitskudo was controlled by the Shihoin Clan (and whenever a Shihoin becomes a Captain that Squad also gains control over the Onmitskudo), and Hiyori's relationship with Capt. Kirio Hikifune prior to her promotion to Zero Squad. The resemblance of Furoufushi Saito to both of those characters (Hiyori's size and face and Kirio's hair color) are just observations. My opinions about Entetsu Kumoi's appearance is likewise just observations (he clearly is holding a blunt weapon with no blade and his mouth guard appears to be gripped between his real teeth, pressed into his lips - note the absence of gums). Finally, Ginjirō Shirogane, owner of The Silver Dragonfly where Renji buys his expensive sunglasses and former lieutenant of the Sixth Division is mentioned in "Color Bleach+: The Bleach Official Bootleg" from 2010 (which collects a bunch of two-page color shorts from Shonen Jump called "Tedious Everyday Tales Colorful Bleach"). Ginjirō has a daughter named Mihane Shirogane who is the current 9th Seat of the 6th Division and a co-owner of his store who is seen in an omake after Episode 258.

At least 2 members of zero squad existed before the gotei 13, but it wasn't necessarily referred to as zero Devision until after the Gotei 13 were established. Hikifune Kirio was originally recruited from the Gotei 13 after all
My biggest hope out of all bleach related stuff from kubo (normal bleach tybw, hell arc, burn the witch and miscellaneous) is the miscellaneous part for Kubo to hopefully do a 13 ep cour about these first Gotei. He would be silly not to capitalise on these characters that i dont think he would add them for the anime exclusive scenes to not do more on them. He could dedicate an episode to each captain and maybe roll yama, yachiru and chojiro into 1 episode and flesh out the rest, then cour 1 ends with Yhwach appearing for the first time.
Pink hair captain reminds me kenpachi and yachiru put together Kempachi blood lust for battle and yachiru pink hair could show he’s a descendent because she is his bonki
I think it should be noted that the captains and vice captains who were killed by Quincy's probably won't be in hell because when the hollow gets killed by a Quincy the souls are destroyed. I would think the same as led by if a shinigami gets killed too
I don't think it's the same because quincy reiatsu isn't poison for shinigami. For example Mayuri took souls of shinigami that died in the war to revive Kira.

Don’t forget the battles with the Arrancar were more about training several characters to a higher level than any real danger to Soul Society having Unohana step in and absolutely WRECK EVERYONE would have been counter productive.

Great video! I think the Zero Division was already formed, with the exception of Hikifune (since she passed down the mantle to Urahara and knows Shinji) by the time the original Gotei 13 was formed. Nimaiya created all the Zanpakuto, Ichibei named EVERYTHING, Senjumaru weaving the Shihakusho, and Tenjiro creating the Healing Springs. I think these four were likely the original Zero Division, then Hikifune was added later for her contributions in the area of Mod Souls
If they show up in hell Arc I hope they don't get killed with stupid things like infighting and plot Armour because we don't want to have another Quincys situation on like that is happening in TYBW
I think in the next hell arc the villains are the previous 1st generation captains, here me out, the death of yamamoto and retsu unohana complete the original gotei 13, yukitake would be the crucial point in these upcoming battle of these 2 world

I think we will see the original gothic 13 in the hell arc because all of them are in hell now. I believe that’s why kudo added this new scene for the anime so that we are already familiar with them when we see them in the hell arc.

I love the idea the Yammamoto, Unohana and a few others killed the rest of the captains after they refused to embrace peace and so they're still the same bloodthirsty violent savages they were back while in hell.
Even the comment is a bit later compared to when I watched the video but i wanted to mention it's really great and still would love to get a follow up to this video like how the Gotei 13 did change over all the years I would find that very interesting since some of the newer captains in-between are just mentioned in filler or just the novals and I would love to see a video explaining when what changes happening even some of them are just speculations I guess would really appreciate that :)
Yeah, i’ve been saying this ever since I first learned about the existence of the hell chapter. The opposing faction should definitely be the original Gotei, especially now that all surviving members are dead and we’ve learned that their bodies are kept in hell. Picture this for a moment, let’s say there’s some kind of stand-in for the devil and he controls all of the souls in hell. That sets up a grand antagonist who could definitely feel on the scale of Yhwach and Aizen in terms of being an insanely powerful character. One more idea for an arc (though ofc this, if it ever happened, would be years from now) is- okay, so we’ve had hollows as enemies, then soul reapers, then arrancars (the strongest hollows), then fullbringers, then sternritters (the strongest quincies), then maybe the original Gotei in hell (the strongest soul reapers). What if the humans discovered the truth about the soul society after all, as Tokinada had planned, resulting in some kind of human antagonist. We’ve seen similar stuff numerous times in games and movies where there’s a human military that gains powerful new tech in order to take down monsters or stuff. Why not make that work? Just a fun idea
I could at least see Ichibe and Nimaya predating the Gotei 13. However, the other 3 definitely didn't. There's heavy implications that Tenjiro and Shutara were originally part of the Gotei 13, even hinting Shutara was also a Captain of Squad 12, and we know for a fact Kirio was Squad 12's captain only 100 years ago. Heck, there's even a chance Nimaya could've been a part of the Gotei 13, perhaps a blacksmith Yamamoto eventually picked up, who became a 2nd Generation Captain, then a Squad 0 member.
Yeah people tend to forget that the soul society is older than the gotei 13 so they think that Yamato is as old as ichibei. It's actually crazy how old the soul society is because ichibei tells shunsui that the gotei 13 is a new organization to him although it's been around for 1000 years and he says he seen other organizations come and go.
Ichibei and nimaya definitely. Tenjiro had/has a bond with unouhana, shutara had one with Mayuri and co. While kirio was a captain of division 12 before she got promoted to squad zero.
Maybe because ichibei calls the gotei 13 the most successful organization is because it was able to produce royal guards unlike the other organizations that came before
In last filler arc, unohana's imposter i.e. Unohana's Reigai laughs like a menace. The only thing that reigai didn't do was showing her original sword skills. Filler creator can't do that because it will spoil her revelation in original story.
I think it’s possible some might have been so strong that they are waiting in prison or somewhere for something to be strong enough to challenge them and then be killed by them. So maybe after ichigo and others have their offspring?
You can legit make an entire manga/anime from this original captain lore. Like imagine manga/anime called Bleach Origins. We follow the og captains and find out what to them.

I’m not making assumptions compared to Kenny I’m comparing the old gotei to Shunsei. Juha compared them to current gotei thirteen, meaning majority of them were weak, that probably includes past captains like gin and Kaname. So soi fon, Kensei, Rose, Shinji, etc. they probably scaled to post training byakuya, Renji, Rukia, and fully matured toshiro in TYBW
Most of them were battled hardened captains who probably loved fighting like kenpachi does. Also yes it was mainly Yama but they were all mainly unscathed, and didn’t get a Aizen vs everyone treatment
The original Gotei is one of my favorite concepts in Bleach. Yama collected a bunch of murderers and somehow convinced them to work together. I wonder if he or Unohana killed any of them themselves.
He kept them together with his overwhelming strength, the same way aizen did the espada.
The reason why Yachiru didn't age was because she spent alot the time after the thousand year blood war not fighting, it was confirmed confirmed that the fight between her and kenpachi happened before s thousand year blood war, so after s thousand years she hasn't battled and used her spiritual pressure. Characters that use their spiritual pressure alot physically age more. Kenpachi for example looks older than Yachiru Uhohana.

Yes, Squad Zero predates the thirteen court guard squads. Ichibe is millions of years old and was the first to obtain Bankai. Oetsu is likely just as or almost as old as him as he is the one who made the Zanpakuto. Similarly, Senjumaru made the shihakusho, something they all wear (tho I imagine that her promotion took place within the last 2k years since it seemed as tho she knew Yama personally from her interaction with Yhwach).
Whaddya bet Yamamoto woulda been squad zero if he hadn’t been the head captain? Squad Zero members’ sole requirement seems to be history rather than power. They were the first person to obtain Bankai, the people who made the Zanpakuto, shihakusho, healing Kido (kaido), and artificial soul (not mod soul). Strength just happens to be an addition. By all technicalities, Yamamoto also made history. He created the thirteen court guard squads and the Shino academy, both of which are also the history of the soul society. If he hadn’t placed his duty as the leader of the organization, I bet he’d have been offered to be a member of Squad Zero. Which begs the question of what Kuruyashiki made (can’t remember honestly).
Similarly, I think that Tenjiro became a member of Squad Zero after the formation of the thirteen court guard squads. He taught Unohana healing before his promotion, and we can assume that he was promoted shortly after he created it. Let’s assume he took over as captain for Chikiri. With a promotion to squad zero, it leaves an opening. Shortly after, Unohana clashes with Kenpachi and decides to create the healing corps. Thus, she takes over Tenjiro and Chikiri’s old squad while leaving squad 11 either vacant or in the hands of a lieutenant or someone else she deems competent (aka the 2nd Kenpachi). This creates an appropriate timeline for both of them.
That aside, yes, there’s no doubt in my mind that the entire first generation is in hell

Actually it kinda did, though we don't know what it looked like when Kirio Hikifune ran things. Yet, when Senjumaru ran things it was definitely more like the research and development department we think of. However, you gotta remember, Kirio is the creator of artificial souls so she had to have some kinda laboratory capable of producing that.
Tite Kubo revealed not too long ago that Senjumaru created the research and development squad she was the head leader of it with Hikifune, Kisuke, and Mayuri as members

I think we need to consider the context of the original gotei 13 being "blood thirsty killers." Yes, they were products of their time and were most definitely less civil compared to the current gotei 13, but they were at a time of war and we hear them being called blood thirsty killers by Yhwach, their mortal enemy. I feel like if we were to see them and get to know their characters, they would be a lot more nuanced than the psycho murderers they are viewed as by the community.

I think Yamamoto and Unohana went downstairs because they used to be the most prominent members of a group of murderous criminals. Szayelaporro must have been terrible as a human and Ukitake survived his illness by a severed piece of the god that the soul reapers had killed and mulitated. He lived for centuries off of the Soul society's original sin.

Kumoi and Kumoi are not related, Kumoi in the original Gotei is 久面井， the other Kumoi is 雲井. and despite not being a Shiba, Obana Danjiro does have the Shiba Crest(the swird on the front of Kuukaku's outfit and Ganju's pants) on his Zanpakuto
I think the Onmitskudo existed before the Gotei 13 and under the control of the Shihoin Clan. I think that's why Yamamoto recruited Chika Shihoin for his first Gotei 13, but not a representative of any of the other Great Noble Clans.
Furoufushi Saito reminds me less of Riruka and more of a combination of Kirio Hikifune and Hiyori Sakuragaki, which to me implies a common ancestor for both these later characters. Given the way Hiyori treated Capt. Hikifune as a mother-figure it's not too much of a stretch to suggest that they're indeed blood relatives. The only other character she reminds me of is an older version.
Entetsu Kumoi doesn't appear to me to have a lipless mouth and yellow teeth, but rather he seems to be wearing a golden, tooth-shaped mouth guard to protect his real teeth. And his weapon is a kanabo (a metal club), not a katana encircled by ringlets.
There is precedent for retirement from the Gotei 13 without arrest: Ginjirō Shirogane and Seinosuke Yamada both had second careers after having "retired" (or "taken an extended leave of absence" from which they never plan to return).

Specifically, the fact tjhat the Onmitskudo was controlled by the Shihoin Clan (and whenever a Shihoin becomes a Captain that Squad also gains control over the Onmitskudo), and Hiyori's relationship with Capt. Kirio Hikifune prior to her promotion to Zero Squad. The resemblance of Furoufushi Saito to both of those characters (Hiyori's size and face and Kirio's hair color) are just observations. My opinions about Entetsu Kumoi's appearance is likewise just observations (he clearly is holding a blunt weapon with no blade and his mouth guard appears to be gripped between his real teeth, pressed into his lips - note the absence of gums).
Finally, Ginjirō Shirogane, owner of The Silver Dragonfly where Renji buys his expensive sunglasses and former lieutenant of the Sixth Division is mentioned in "Color Bleach+: The Bleach Official Bootleg" from 2010 (which collects a bunch of two-page color shorts from Shonen Jump called "Tedious Everyday Tales Colorful Bleach"). Ginjirō has a daughter named Mihane Shirogane who is the current 9th Seat of the 6th Division and a co-owner of his store who is seen in an omake after Episode 258.

My biggest hope out of all bleach related stuff from kubo (normal bleach tybw, hell arc, burn the witch and miscellaneous) is the miscellaneous part for Kubo to hopefully do a 13 ep cour about these first Gotei. He would be silly not to capitalise on these characters that i dont think he would add them for the anime exclusive scenes to not do more on them. He could dedicate an episode to each captain and maybe roll yama, yachiru and chojiro into 1 episode and flesh out the rest, then cour 1 ends with Yhwach appearing for the first time.

I think it should be noted that the captains and vice captains who were killed by Quincy's probably won't be in hell because when the hollow gets killed by a Quincy the souls are destroyed. I would think the same as led by if a shinigami gets killed too
I don't think it's the same because quincy reiatsu isn't poison for shinigami. For example Mayuri took souls of shinigami that died in the war to revive Kira.

Great video! I think the Zero Division was already formed, with the exception of Hikifune (since she passed down the mantle to Urahara and knows Shinji) by the time the original Gotei 13 was formed. Nimaiya created all the Zanpakuto, Ichibei named EVERYTHING, Senjumaru weaving the Shihakusho, and Tenjiro creating the Healing Springs. I think these four were likely the original Zero Division, then Hikifune was added later for her contributions in the area of Mod Souls
If they show up in hell Arc I hope they don't get killed with stupid things like infighting and plot Armour because we don't want to have another Quincys situation on like that is happening in TYBW

Yeah, i’ve been saying this ever since I first learned about the existence of the hell chapter. The opposing faction should definitely be the original Gotei, especially now that all surviving members are dead and we’ve learned that their bodies are kept in hell. Picture this for a moment, let’s say there’s some kind of stand-in for the devil and he controls all of the souls in hell. That sets up a grand antagonist who could definitely feel on the scale of Yhwach and Aizen in terms of being an insanely powerful character.
One more idea for an arc (though ofc this, if it ever happened, would be years from now) is- okay, so we’ve had hollows as enemies, then soul reapers, then arrancars (the strongest hollows), then fullbringers, then sternritters (the strongest quincies), then maybe the original Gotei in hell (the strongest soul reapers). What if the humans discovered the truth about the soul society after all, as Tokinada had planned, resulting in some kind of human antagonist. We’ve seen similar stuff numerous times in games and movies where there’s a human military that gains powerful new tech in order to take down monsters or stuff. Why not make that work? Just a fun idea

I could at least see Ichibe and Nimaya predating the Gotei 13. However, the other 3 definitely didn't. There's heavy implications that Tenjiro and Shutara were originally part of the Gotei 13, even hinting Shutara was also a Captain of Squad 12, and we know for a fact Kirio was Squad 12's captain only 100 years ago. Heck, there's even a chance Nimaya could've been a part of the Gotei 13, perhaps a blacksmith Yamamoto eventually picked up, who became a 2nd Generation Captain, then a Squad 0 member.
Yeah people tend to forget that the soul society is older than the gotei 13 so they think that Yamato is as old as ichibei. It's actually crazy how old the soul society is because ichibei tells shunsui that the gotei 13 is a new organization to him although it's been around for 1000 years and he says he seen other organizations come and go.

Ichibei and nimaya definitely. Tenjiro had/has a bond with unouhana, shutara had one with Mayuri and co. While kirio was a captain of division 12 before she got promoted to squad zero.
Maybe because ichibei calls the gotei 13 the most successful organization is because it was able to produce royal guards unlike the other organizations that came before
In last filler arc, unohana's imposter i.e. Unohana's Reigai laughs like a menace. The only thing that reigai didn't do was showing her original sword skills. Filler creator can't do that because it will spoil her revelation in original story.
Kinruko, first squad 3 captain, used a wakizashi. Generations later, Gin, captain of third squad, also used a Wakizashi
I think it’s possible some might have been so strong that they are waiting in prison or somewhere for something to be strong enough to challenge them and then be killed by them. So maybe after ichigo and others have their offspring?
