    Probably worth noting that after updating the firmware you can switch between 3 mappings. Default mapping is (cross) --> A (square)-->B (triangle)-->C (R1)--> D (start and select are the same) and that works perfectly for common Fightstick layouts.

    I think the converter is worth the $45. Especially, if you already have a Hori stick. It’s a cheaper alternative than buying or building a custom Neo stick. Thanks for the review. It was very helpful

  • @ZeniusFox
    @ZeniusFox 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just a note, they updated the firmware a while back that added additional button configurations. By default, the new layout is that of a Neo Geo Arcade Stick.The other 2 are the default Neo Geo CD pad layout and a KOF layout. I'd say its worth the investment if you already have a PS3/4 arcade stick or controller .

      @@JimmelMartin you press the home button + R1 = the standard Neo Geo button layout. While pushing home button and either triangle, or Circle, will give you the King of Fighters or CD layout.

      Would be nice if they released a tool that allowed you to change the default button mappings. Maybe plug in into a PC and change them there. Would still rather it allow direct manipulation and saving, but I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. Seems like a product that wasn't very well thought out.

    Great review, Todd. I was planning to add a Neo Geo port to my VX-SA (Chimp installed for 360/PS3 switching), but this adapter would actually be a lot cooler since it does the same task but also opens up lots of other controller possibilities. If only it saved mappings, how disappointing! Do you know if it works with a PS2-to-PS3 dongle?

    • @ToddsNerdCave
      @ToddsNerdCave  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great review Todd. This is my first time hearing about this converter. Judging from your review, it might not be worth the 2x cost over the tototek controller adapter. The red light would drive me nuts, and with button remapping already available in a lot of NG titles, it just doesn't seem all that necessary.

    • @ToddsNerdCave

    I had a strange experience with this device. I have consolized neo geo mvs 1 slot board. My controller inputs are on the board already. I plugged this device in without the firmware update and I was using my hori rap4 also. The game started up fine and all seemed well. When I pressed the A button the game would reset. I plugged in my original AES controller with the same game and this was not the problem. After doing the firmware update I plugged the controller in and the game started up fine and it works fine. Just letting anyone know if you are going to buy this, this device does have issues.

    Hey Todd,
    Another finely detailed and informative video that you published for us bro.
    Its an average product for sure, the downside is that it doesn't save mappings for me. But overall, I think you can certainly do better. But who knows, if the developers listen to the concerns of the community, they'll learn from the errors and make a better product for next time.
    Anyway, I posted this on the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage.com for you so others can listen to what you had to say about it.
    Its on page 271, post #6753 for you to view.

      OldGraFX I would consider this, if almost all selles in the U.S. wouldn't ship with overpriced and painfully slow snailmail service USPS.
      Some stuff took 2+ months to ship with them.
      I can accept this for free shipping from PRC, where it get's in a container, and the item in turn is bloody cheap for having a 3+ months duration.
      Why people use USPS and even consider paying $40+ for slow shipping when UPS overnights stuff across the atlantic for $20 is beyond any rationale.
      If they would pick DHL, I could at least use that parcelbox thingy down the road and don't have to take a day off or leave early just to be able to pick it up at the postal office.

    • @RetrOrigin
      @RetrOrigin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right, I completely forgot about international shipping.
      Also to be honest the original AES or Kidney sticks aren't that great, specially for fighting games (I personally use a Hori Stick Neo II)

    Grah. I pre-ordered two of these, only to find out after the fact that my joystick isn't supported. When I placed the order, there was no compatibility list, only a mention of support for sticks from MadCatz, among others. At least that saved me from the ridiculous remapping setup.

      I was told they would look into adding my stick in a future update, but if they did, it wouldn't be for a long time. Not holding out much hope. I wish I could find a good Saturn to Neo Geo adapter. I know a company made them years ago, but I can't track one down and no one seems to have made one since then.

    The RetroReceivers already stick out almost too far. If they had to add a second full-sized USB port then they would protrude too far. This can damage your Neo Geo by levering on the controller port.

    • @ToddsNerdCave
      @ToddsNerdCave  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you saying the 8bitdo receiver sticks out too far? I just measured and weighed it versus an original SNES controller. The retro receiver weighs the same amount as a SNES controller connector and is only about 5 millimeters longer. Hardly a big deal.

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Todd's Nerd Cave I'm saying that the SNES and NES 8bitdo RetroReceivers _almost_ stick out too far. I was recently moving my SNES RetroReceiver between ports to demonstrate the console's port detection and it was very difficult to do with one hand without putting a lot of stress on it. The NES one may look barely any bigger than a standard connector, but it also protrudes about as far as I am comfortable with. They are both fine for general use. I don't have the NES Classic Edition/Wii version, but that is the only one that looks like it may be an issue. A rigid dongle with two USB ports and the required buttons would be larger than either of these RetroReceivers. Combined with the deep Neo Geo controller ports, and a MUCH more expensive console and I think it'd be asking for trouble (IMO).

      There is a firmware update for this converter that address the button layout issue. The stock layout is the standard arcade button layout of a b c d. You can also switch it to the CD layout and I do believe one other. It's a fairly quick button combo and it stays saved on that setting when you turn it off. So button remapping is no longer required.

      Todd's Nerd Cave that's kinda sad.
      Anyway, Building own NeoGeo Controllers w/ Sanwa/Seimitsu Buttons & Joysticks is way cheaper.
      An used aftermarket (!!!) Controller for NeoGeo retails for over 50€ in Germany, and those Hori Arcade Pads are even waaaay more expensive!
      At the same time, 2 Joysticks w/ 20 Buttons cost less than 20€…
      I'll just get some plain wood planks and some screw terminals to DB-15/DB-25 and build my own controller.
      It won't be cheaper at the end if you count in personnel hours, but it will be completely customizeable…
      I guess I could build my own X360 to NeoGeo adapter using a Raspberry Pi 3, xpad and a few relays controlled via GPIO. But that would be even more expensive than such a dedicaded adapter.
      On the other hand, it could support almost any controller with USB.
      So maybe that could be a wanted thing for a commercial product - espachally if it would support hooking up multiple controllers and allocate them to multiple players…

    You used a stick and not even an actual PS4 controller or an actual NG-AES. Giving this a bad review without using the actual devices that it was made for is a bit disingenuous.

    • @ToddsNerdCave
      @ToddsNerdCave  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I explained in the video why I used the MVS board with a supergun. It's controller port is wired to be identical to the AES (I know, because I made it) so it behaves the exact same as the home console. And none of that changes that I didn't care for the fact that it doesn't save button mappings. That was my beef with it. They have since updated the firmware to include a couple predefined button configs, which certainly improves it. However it still doesn't save button remappings.
